In the 1980s my wife and I saw a couple coming out of the old church in the video. We stopped to talk and ask them about the battle. They turned out to be the Ter Horsts. They invited us to tea in their house and told us their story. What an honor to meet them. They have a monument in their back garden- an upside down Pegasus - with a reflecting pool. The reflection shows Pegasus rising. What a gracious and beautiful couple they were. May they Rest In Peace.

We lived in Arnhem during the Battle of Arnhem, I remember seeing Hotel Hartenstein just after the battle and the Arnhem Bridge with all the shot up pieces of tanks etc. And they enormous fires downtown Arnhem. The sky was red at night. Very soon after that the entire population of Arnhem was evacuated. we stayed first in Roozendaal and a little later walked to Ede where we stayed with a family till May 1945 when we where liberated by Canadians. We have lived now in Canada since 1957. Still have many books and old movies regarding the Battle of Arnhem also called Operation Market Garden.

Awesome footage of the beautiful Dutch countryside. I visited the Arnhem and Oosterbeek battlefields in 2005, but only spent two days. This video is a wonderful look at where things happened. The incredible heroism and sacrifice of those men will never be forgotten.

good video! I play a Steam game called, Post Scriptum. The developers really did a fantastic job on recreating the towns, and the Arnhem bridge etc. It's amazing to watch the history here on KZbin and compare it to the online battles I've had in those very structures. Great job, Bart.

Wat een vondst. Bart je bent een media pioneer! Dit stukje is bijzonder voor mij, omdat ik als kind zo vaak rondliep rond de Ploegseweg na de oorlog. en elke meter met de historie ken en toch meer wil weten. Doorgaan!

One of the lads who were injured there and captured by the Germans , really accepted the way they treated the British soldiers , and he said to me all injured whether German or Allies got looked after the same . . PS the lad that that told me this was from London , and he was shot in the hand, one could see that damage for sure , he migrated to Redcliffe Queensland after the war , and that is where i became friends with him his name was FRED Insels from London , lovely lad he was always happy . Duncan Pitkeathly . PS Fred died quite a few years ago probably in the 90's .

I walked around the perimeter for the first time last year and it's supprisingly small. Major Cain was Jeremy Clarkson father-in-law. There is a very interesting video about VC holders including Cain on KZbin presented by Clarkson.

Hartelijke groet.

Nogmaals geweldig gedaan !

Very Very Good, I was able to pick out the roof top of the house our Great Uncle Sgt Pat McCarthy 11th Bn Para Regt was killed at, this year 2017 we spoke with an old gentleman in the house neighbouring the location, it transpired he was one of the many children sheltering in a house known at the time as Verderhof (Garden of peace) and witnessed what the Germans did to the body of Sgt McCarthy, Hence no known grave, he is remembered on Panel 9 of Groosbeek cemetery. Our next plan is to seek permission to have a small brass plate situated at the last known location of where he was killed and his body witnessed disposed of.Thank you.

@Andy Falconer Thanks for sharing. I'm just curious what the Germans did to the body of Sgt McCarthy? I was always under the impression there was a mutual respect for the dead and wounded in particular that battle. (Unlike the situation at the Eastern Frontline).

Thank you for giving us clear perspective of the battlefield. But I always thought the Neder Rijn was much wider! I'm assuming that it was the current that made it unswimmable - and exhaustion.
@BartHoux Жыл бұрын
The Rhine was a bit wider indeed .. locks and “re-routing” parts of the current changed it a bit. But you’re right, I know from my own experience that the current is very strong when swimming. Thanks for your compliments

KZbin's worst soundtrack. It is right here. Dreadful choice of 'music', too loud, irrelevant to the topic.

Its the 'A Bridge Too Far' theme numbnuts how is that irrelevant?
@zogzog10636 жыл бұрын
Greenjacksilly. (1) That point had already been made, are you blind or do you like the pack mentality. If you had the benefit of a tertiary education you would have been taught that there is no such thing as argument by repetition. (2) A bit of advice: Don't go round throwing insults. You look foolish - what are you? Some Mighty Internet Warrior who throws punches from the safety of his (mum's) keyboard? (3) The question is not how it is irrelevant, rather 'How is it relevant?' It is a poor soundtrack that has no military element. The 'music' stands or falls on its own merits.
