The British reaction to the civil rights movement in NI lead directly to the violent struggle. The Unionist attitude toward " Catholics" was exclusionary and designed to eliminate the Irish Catholic. Ulster was the forefront of resistance to English rule in Ireland, and the English answer to it was to unleash genocide vis a vis the Planters. As history has shown, the Irish will fight back and war is hell. Although the IRA committed many atrocities, a failure to mention the genocide that preceded it, or the bigotry that is still alive and we'll in Loyalist communities, is a disservice . Best to learn that insults and bombs only produce more of the same

The Republic of Ireland is constitutionally and institutionally for the Irish/Catholic in much the same way that the United Kingdom is for the British/Protestant. You think it's an outrage that Irish/Catholics are forced to live under a sectarian British/Protestant government, yet you're fine with British/Protestants being forced to live under a sectarian Irish/Catholic government? Both systems represent only one section of the community whilst subjugating and disparaging the other.

***** , all of the people of NI would live under a secular Irish government. Protestants and Catholics. The simmering divide has been kept alive by those with an economic interest in conflict paramilitaries on both sides are gangsters and extortionists. Most people in the Republic could care less if someone is Protestant or Catholic

Scotland also put planters into Ireland in large numbers, not just England.
@omaolchonaire
@omaolchonaire 9 жыл бұрын
Anthony Inger England put those Scottish planters there. My Mum's side are Presbyterians from Ulster, though they were United Irishmen who moved to French Canada. They were Mac Gregors who became Walkers because the English banned their name. Scottish people who would rather be English have sold out their race. The English cleared them off their lands against their will to make way for sheep. When we gave Scotland its independence at Drum Ceat, it was agreed under the influence of Colm Chille that we would defend each other until the end of time. When Bonnie Prince Charlie escaped from Culloden, it was with my 6th great grandfather's brother, Captain Conn O'Neill of The Feevagh, County Antrim who took him to Flora Mac Donnell in South Uist and thought up the plan to disguise him as Betty Burke.

I'm British and I fully support the PIRA and their struggle and what they were fighting for. I deplore some of their actions though like Eniskillen, Warrington, and Omagh. Totally unnecessary that was. As could be said for the British Army in Derry (Bloody Sunday)The Army were sent in to NI to protect the Catholics from Loyalist thugs, the RUC, who of course sided with the Loyalists. And then ultimately the the British Army too. Atrocities were committed on both sides, innocent civilians were killed on both sides, that's what happens in all Wars. Their is currently a fragile peace in NI atvthe moment. But their won't be total peace until their is a United Ireland I feel. But that will come by Political means and the ballot box, not by the guns & bombs of the past.
@kevinbrookes4870
@kevinbrookes4870 4 жыл бұрын
@IPLO Rokas Oh sorry you say your loyal to the UK? I guess that makes you a Loyalist then? But in your comment you don't condemn the Loyalist murdering scumbags like the UVA and UFF among others, just the PIRA, bit one sided from you I must say. As for myself I said I supported the PIRA cause not wholly their methods of trying to achieve it. I condemn all violence. Atrocities were committed on all sides in Northern Ireland including the British Army RUC, Loyalist and PIRA paramilitaries. And the future of NI will now be decided by the ballot box and not the gun and bombs I hope.

@Alex Mulvihill Yes it was the British government that deployed the Army, not the Northern Irish government, Northern Ireland didn't have their own government at that time. The army were sent in initially to protect the Catholics from the RUC and the Loyalist thugs. Some protection that turned out to be, the British Army eventually siding with the Loyalists. And so the Catholics turned to the PIRA for protection. All the Catholics wanted were their civil rights which they were denied. Jobs, Housing, the right to vote etc. A basic requirement for most people in a civilised society today. But instead they were discriminated against, subjected to violence, burned out of homes denied a vote, and subjected to Gerrymandering.

That democratic election you're talking about wouldn't have been possible if it wasn't for the "unfair response" to the 1918 general election. The majority matters when Britain wants it to. The so-called diplomats who drew up the partition scheme knew exactly what they were doing when they did it. They created an artificial majority. They also originally only included 4 of the 6 counties but that was considered a non-viable solution so they forced the majority catholic populations into NI.

The dark complexion in Ireland came from the Spanish Armadas Marines that crashed on the west coast of ireland after the royal navy routed them. The local population welcomed and protected the Spanish Catholics from English patrols seeking to finish them off. My mother is from dublin, all her family have a dark complexion. The irish refer to them as black Irish. My mother told me that the family knew there was Spanish blood in our Gene's from as far back as the 1500s.

Ireland at that time was still part of the British Commonwealth but maintained neutrality. during this time he interned active republicans, hanging 6 and 3 died on hunger strike. @OceanBlue what I'm pointing out that is after ww2 the world changed dramatically, the British empire was essentially gone,basically every other country who fought alongside Britain was going to be given independence so why not Ireland? People were migrating all over the world... Obviously we have the benefit of hindsight as regards the outcome of the war... However I wonder if Mr de Valera would have answered differently had he known 🤔. Ps if you consider the access to Irish ports and the Atlantic shipping lanes it would obviously have made a difference to the war effort. I'm also thinking that the British government would be holding that grudge a long time!! The final payment of £83 million in war loans from USA was only paid off in 2006.

OceanBlue it’s untrue to say that “they” (the Irish) tried to help or supported Hitler. There were at different times popular elected Jewish mayors of both Dublin and Cork, (Robert Briscoe, Gerald Goldberg). As with most countries (including England) there was a tiny minority who supported Hitler, the vast majority of Irish people were deeply horrified by the Nazis. Your comment shows little respect for the huge numbers of Irish volunteers who served in the W.W.2 British Army. Four V.C.s won by people from my county (Tipperary). The complexity of the wartime period defies the easy generalizations in your comment.

I think this documentary explains anything that needs explaining, and anyone who still claims the IRA were wrong are too embedded in their right wing pro colonial views. As Brendan Hughes said, no one other than a complete psychopath likes to use violence. If we could force change via a peaceful democratic path we would, but the British ALWAYS used violence to crush peaceful protest, drawing the Irish people into armed conflict in an attempt to undermine the morality of our grievances!!! No one disputes the IRA often done terrible things, some premeditated, some accidental, but who can rightfully judge them?? Only those who condemn ALL violence, be it the violence of an elected government or a guerilla army, that's who!! So please none of this my army has higher morals than your army.

***** Just outside Beacon old bean, in the heart of the old tin mining country, where my good lady is from, but I also split my time between London and Belfast, cant spend all my time surfing, not bad for a working class lad from south Belfast. As for my grandmother she lived in a wee street on the Grosvenor Road end of Roden Street, Grosvenor Park ran across the bottom of her street, so if the Blues where away my grandfather would go and see the whites...

Brendan hughes great human being, bit ignorant on socialism though, that's exactly what the bankers want, socialism even fewer people at the top run by a central bank. just a different version of the same world but with even less freedom and fewer people at the top, that's why were heading towards a one world socialist government, its actually the best system the rothshcild bankers and royal family can wish for. they didn't really hate it during the cold war, they invented it and sent Trotsky over from new York to implement it, they had to pretend to hate it to create fear amongst the public of imminent nuclear war, it was all about controlling people. in reality were heading towards a one world soviet union type government unless people wake up and realise the agenda that is now unfolding before our eyes. rip Brendan, what a man.

Further to my last statement where I stated British civilians knew both sides of the story (those knowledgeable ) because of relatives n friends . Further in this was confirmed When Bredon Hughes ira man, stated whilst under arrest 2 British soldiers were arguing for and against. Shows what I stated to be true in that those British citizens in the know got both sides of the argument or were for or against Republicanism or loyalism. Thank God its calm now.
