The Narrowboat Experience

The decision has been made - we are going to move on to our narrowboat. Now the intimidating task of packing has started. Must to the disapproval of the cats who of course must supervise our every move!

Hello my brave girls! I've been watching you for a few weeks and I am totally hooked on your adventures. We've had a very similar experience with my hubby and our dog, two years ago when we decided to move out from our 2 bedroom house into a 30 years old motorhome to start vanlife and travel around Europe. We too thought we had little stuff and even saw ourselves as minimalist... well it took 3 months to get rid of most of our possessions... at first we were selling, then giving away... Well done for getting to the end of it. We lived in a motorhome for 18 months and did two amazing trips, we now settled (for the time being :D) on a campsite where we work and live in a caravan with our lurcher. Our seasonal job allows us to travel in winter. Any regrets? None. Any junk in a caravan? Sadly... yes, but it is still a fraction of what we used to own. Getting rid of stuff is liberating. I will check how much space you actually have on your boat, because it seems it is more than in an average caravan. Love you both to bits! X X and for the cats: X X ;-)

It will feel so liberating when you have done it. I put all my stuff in storage for a year in 2013 when I went travelling. I filled a 65 square foot container with boxes and furniture. After 12 months I returned to England and ended up selling or donating 95% of my possessions. The funny thing was, that after a year away I had forgotten that I owned so much of it. And had spent a fortune on storing stuff I didn't need. At the time, I did wonder if I would regret having such a big clear out, but 3 years later I can honestly say I don't. The battle now is to not start collecting more things that I don't need, although living abroad has helped as I know I won't be able to carry much when I return to England in the new year. Good luck with the move!

It's funny how we are all conditioned to want and 'need' stuff that we don't actually want or need. I'm much happier being less of a consumer of stuff but it definitely doesn't come naturally. Looking forward to the next instalment of your adventure. Jo

As one who has been through this process when I moved into my RV. It is sooo hard to let go of stuff but so freeing when you are finished. Keep the memories, get rid of the stuff. Take pictures of the things that break your heart to get rid of. I felt clean and light and have not regretted it for a moment. Good Luck.

Best of luck with your downsizing because that's something I would REALLY struggle with! Books are my weakness and I can't bear to part with them! Thanks for letting me follow your narrow boat journey.

I feel so lucky! I have moved so many times in my life that I have very little stuff. Most of it got left behind somewhere else. Secondly, every square inch of my boat is actually just for me - which is not exactly the case for you guys. I feel for you.

It doesn't sound silly at all, but it's good to agree on this kind of stuff beforehand, so that if it needs to be done there's no, "You don't love me any more," kind of feelings. Apart from an ocassional hospital stay, my parents always slept in the same bed and always went to bed at the same time. It was an unbreakable rule which got fixed in stone as the years went by.

good job on the down sizing. 5 years ago when we down sized from a 9 room house( empty nesters) the starting point was if we have not used it or worn it in 2 years it was Gone.. And that was just the starting point... It is really hard to do

Hi Guys. Great series so far with your journey. I am a Brit living here in Tucson Arizona so not many narrowboats around here. How about a couple of videos on how you found and purchased the boat? or maybe one of your own story? Enjoy.

I admire you two, taking the leap. I would be so scared, I wish I was more adventurous. I wondered if you look back & remember the fear of taking the leap? And are you happy you downsized and went for it? 🙂Thank you for sharing. Your videos are very interesting

Given myself until next Easter to de-clutter and sort stuff for storage/boat prior to going live-aboard.... At the current rate (piled up all my clothing into fits/doesn't fit/don't wear... then decided I may lose weight before next Easter and I actually like some of the stuff I have that I haven't worn ever so the whole lot ended up back in the wardrobes...) I really don't think I have given myself enough time

I don't like to rush these things.... And todays excuse... Box full of clothes to be checked through has now become new favourite sleeping spot of the day for the cat....so that's buggered that until I can convince him to go back the amazon box in the living room.....

My cats have a chirping cricket toy they love but sometimes at 3 am it has to disappear into a drawer. When my belongings start to get cluttered I like to donate/throw away a bunch of things, but I have to be in the right mood or I'll talk myself into keeping more than I need.

We are watching Packing It All In. We relate to the delema, I look around our home and think of all the "stuff" we have accumulated and would need to get rid of to move into a camper trailer or even an apartment. We want to do it but............?

Love the vids. Very entertaining. Get a Dropbox account and use your iPhone to scan documents directly into it that you think you'd like to keep. Paperless is the future especially for a fellow minimalist. 😀

So which is worse? Is it sorting into categories or the actual boxing and carrying of boxes to the car? I always hated both rather equally. But look on the bright side. Should you ever decide to move back into an apartment or house, you'll have soooooo much less junk to carry! Pain today but fun tomorrow. Just make sure Alice and Munchkin know they are 'keepers'.
