THIS IS WHY we couldn't take the narrowboat on the River Severn (feat. the Severn Bore)

The Narrowboat Experience

The Narrowboat Experience

3 жыл бұрын

We are stopped from going on the River Severn today by a high tide. When there is a high tide on the River Severn it creates the Severn Bore which is often used by surfers to 'catch a wave'.
We are grateful to droneace services Gloucester for supplying the footage of the surfers at the bore. Please check out their Facebook page and say 'hi' from us.

Ah Yay! You are on the Gloucester Sharpness Canal. I did mention I s comment on one of your earlier Avon videos that you would love it. Hope you go as far as Sharpness. Happy memories for me. We adopted a dog from Patch Bridge, her master, the bridge keeper had passed away and his wife couldn't keep her. She was 11, we thought we'd have her for a couple of years but she lived til well into her 19th year. Her name was Susie a black and tan collie who took her job on the bridge very seriously, barking when she heard the bell ringing for the bridge to be opened. She was a bit of a legend amongst boaters back then ❤️❤️

Having boated on the Mississippi river many times, there was nothing more frightening than submerged logs that were just deep enough to be invisible on the surface, but shallow enough to bugger up a wooden boat. Your trip brought back a few heart-stopping memories.

The locks from the IJsselmeer to the Wadden Sea are even bigger, but you wouldn’t be in those with a narrowboat. We were in a 48 foot cabin cruiser sailboat (significantly higher freeboard, width, and draft) the one time when we sailed over the North Sea to Lowestoft, and a slightly smaller one on up to Helgoland the year before. Those locks are quite something.

Special is it, 4 times a year high tide on a coastal river. Rivers like the Amazon can have one of 25 feet high! Not a narrowboat wave. Loved to come with you, thanks for this journey.

As a young man I worked on log rafts floating up and down the rivers near my home on the Pacific Northwest coast of the United States. Those partially submerged trees or logs are called deadheads. Just like the fans of the rock/folk band, the Grateful Dead. LOL! Safe travels ladies. I thoroughly enjoy your channel.

Great vlog Ladies you handled all the tricky bits extremely professionally. The Severn has the second highest tides in the world after my river the Saint John where spring tides will rise and fall around 36 feet .We even have a set of rapids that reverse their flow ,Navigating them is only possible at slack water, not a long interval but we don't have Locks to contend with. My boats are high and dry now for the winter so I look forward to your posts even more for watery adventures Take care be safe .Thank you ,Cheers from Saint John NB Canada

Glad you came here, sorry we missed you both. Kane wanted to say his to his portrait painter. So the G&S is as wide as the river in parts, at least the bridges are all manned. It's funny, you were spotted when you got to Gloucester...... we got a message from another NB you were moored by. Small world this boating lark.

I remember the bores from the mid 1960s when I sailed from the Avon Sailing Club, next to what is now the Yew Tree Inn, a mile or so down stream from Tewkesbury. The Cheltenham College sailing club had 4 "National 12" dinghies. Most times when the bore came through, it was only a foot or two, maybe three, feet tall. If you were heading upstream at the time in your race, and you were a bit cunning, you could catch the front of the bore and be taken upstream, overtaking all the other boats that didn't catch the wave. Some of the adults, with faster boats, got very p'd off to be passed by 15 year old kids 😁😁 Good memories

I've been thinking of the stained tea mug you featured in a previous vlog and here's a couple of cleaning solution: Fill mug with lukewarm water stir in level teaspoon of Oxyclean powder, leave overnight. Mug sparkling in the morning! A cheaper but more involved solution if you don’t have Oxyclean is to look for an old lady who's wearing false teeth. Knock her over and whilst she’s down steal a Steradent tablet from her purse. Again drop this in a mug full of water and leave overnight for the same sparkling result. Please Note: Don’t be a meany and steal the lady’s money as they always count this, but trust me they never count their Steradent tablets. So if you are caught you can always say it was an accident, crumbling to dust the evidence in your pocket whilst telling the officer you were looking in her purse for smelling salts. It works every time for me. Try not to target the same old lady twice there are a couple in our village that cross over the road now when they see me. What can I say, I drink a lot of tea. Thanks for the vlogs.

Really interesting vlog. We also have a closed bow boat but I secure our anchor at the bow as I read an anchor thrown off the stern can pull the stern down in some circumstances and flood engine bay. Not sure I’d cope with running down gunwale in an emergency though so maybe should do same as you.

Thanks for another great one ladies.

A rope (or two) across your solar panel could dramatically reduce the panel efficiency and output. Depending on how the cells are arranged covering one small cell could reduce an entire chain. A few low profile hooks at the side would keep the rope neatly bypassing the panel.

We used to moor our first Narrowboat at Sharpness, watching this reminded me of collecting the boat from the Marina you purchased Lazy Days from and travelling down. I was very apprehensive of getting to Gloucester lock as I read all sorts of horrible stories, but like you I got good instructions and it was simple. You should ensure you get to Sharpness friendly people and outstanding views over the Severn. Really enjoy your videos, thanks.

The Heron that you showed around 12:24 looks very similar to a species of bird we have out here in Oakland California (West Coast of America) called the Black Crested Night Heron, part of the "Neckless" heron specie. So cool. Also, I would be so scared being on a river like that on a narrow boat, of course I have no experience with such things, but still, that is awesome that you all are doing that. Thank so much for the videos, they have been keeping me sane through the chaos of this year, or at least more towards sane.

Cats despite their propensity to avoid water at all costs can actually swim if their life depended on it, though how long for and in a flowing river.... i wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't for long as their coats would waterlog pretty quickly. Accidental dips in garden ponds and swimming pools are not commonly killers for them. Cat buoyancy aids do actually exist, not hugely expensive either though I suspect these two would take quite some persuasion to have them on..
