That is stupendous to have women who help other women. Gosh, what a special cruise. Partly Alice will learn about boat handling, but also she'll learn about confidence, the confidence she will have after just a bit more experience, because women can do anything we want to, and we're good at it. Yes, boat surveys, even if you aren't required to get them ... get them! And then get the work done that's required or even just suggested. It could save your life. And you love your boat right? :-) Treat your boat right. Yep, depending on which way your prop turns (so to speak :-) ... the prop can turn clockwise or counterclockwise and that will make the boat's stern move sideways even if the tiller is dead "straight" ahead, and the boat will be difficult to turn especially in reverse. See? Alice already knows stuff. Pretty soon, she'll be teaching other women. Ha!!! yes, "best bit", is shutting off your engine when you are safely moored. What a great feeling. When I had a 40-foot twin engine power boat here in the USA, I used to go out on other people's boats to teach the woman how to operate them if their husband fell or had a heart attack, etc. Sometimes that woman would let her husband come on board for those lessons, but if he did, my rule was that he sat in the back cabin and kept his mouth shut. Without fail, the women I "helped" already knew how to handle a boat, they just didn't have the confidence. In 28 years of boating, I've never found a woman who didn't know how to handle a boat ... I found lots of men who didn't because their ego didn't let them learn. Sigh. Humans are so goofy. Great video, Heidi. Thank you! Here's to Alice ... and to Nikki (sp?) ... and to you. Cheers!

Hello Heidie. I was on the same Shropshire/Llangollen canals a few dozen years ago. Llangollen was inbound only in the evening and outbound in the mornings. Very narrow that last section into Llangollen and no way to turn around if someone got mixed up. Loved it and it was the best vacation ever. There is absolutely nothing like too much wind when boating. Especially when you have a new bottom. In about 1973 we, ( my younger brother, my cousin and me) saved a sheep that had fallen into the cut. It weighed a ton, but the farmer was very grateful. Nothing like a tight entrance to challenge your expertise, after all you don't get bendy boats do you? Great vlog as ever.

Yes those older boats can be problematic…the one I chose last year (1984) had so many issues crop up during the survey, it simply wasn’t worth the money, energy or my time! Now I need to manifest more funds if I want to buy a decent boat to live aboard. But it is so gratifying to see others living their dreams on board narrowboats 🙏😌👍

Hello Heidi, I have just watched David's two part blog on you and The Rum Wench. I did not know you also sold ice cream (but I certainly understand why). I recently came across an unusual recipe (not ice cream) that you might want to think about; garlic butter candles! Rather than spreading garlic butter over slices of bread, and then shoving them in the oven to warm up, you light the (thick) candle, wait until it has melted a bit, then tear off a bit of bread and dip it into the melt. There are various recipes available (or you can try coming up with a few of your own), but the important bit is to use a food safe candle wick. It was lovely to meet you at Wrenbury. I hope the cruise goes well, and maybe we will bump into each other again. If ever you are down in the Reading area I would be happy to help. There is a large branch of Tesco on the River Thames near to the Kennet, where you can moor up and and do your shopping. The current where the Kennet joins the Thames can be 'interesting' and has caught people out. James
