ICE breaking | Frozen in a Narrowboat | Pontcysyllte Aqueduct [Ep 89]

The Highs and lows of boat life in the winter! I cruise my narrowboat over the amazing Pontcysyllte Aqueduct - The highest CANAL aqueduct in the world and then have to break my way through the ice - something I didn't think i would encounter on the Llangollen canal due to it having a constant flow from the River Dee, however freezing temperatures as low as -6 cause one of the biggest freezes for over 10 years.

Like a BIG nerd, I was watching some really old footage of one of the ways they used to break the ice to clear a channel back in the busy busy working canal days. They had about 10 guys standing in a open medium sized boat that has a central beam. They all hang onto the beam/bar and, whilst moving forward they violently rock the boat from side to side to break the ice - I’m not sure if they were poling the boat or and then rocking to crack the ice or if they had a motor. But wow, it looked really effective but VERY precarious. I’d be terrified of falling in. Fascinating, hey? 🙂🐿🌈❤️

I watch all your videos I used to have what you long boaters called a plastic pig but it just did the same job one memorable item was we were going through a lock the sides of the lock were boughed out and as the water dropped our boat was suspended in mid air we had to fill up again and strip all the mouldings off the sides off our boat to drop down then refit all again but loved it drinking after mooring up then catching eels and selling them to passing boaters I would love to do it again I would have liked to have seen you when in prees but now house bound and have had a stiffy with you all my love keep up the good work petlyn1

One trick I learnt and used was to dry wet or newly cut wood in the oven. Works a treat. It’s great if you have an Aga or wood stove with a plate warning drawer at the bottom . Low low slow heat. 🙂🐿🌈❤️ I’m glad that you’re coming into summer time now - defrost yourself and enjoy it all .

Whoweee, that was some ice to break through! Hope it didn't take all the blacking off. Really pretty around there. How long are you allowed to moor in the basin? Really nice to have another single to travel with and nice people to visit with as well. Makes it fun. That's too much cold and hard work for me! It's 13F here today. No intention of going anywhere. Hi Heidi, Weve just discovered your channel and have a lot of catching up to do! I loved the drone shots of the aqueduct. your humor is priceless keep it up! We have been on barge holidays many years ago and loved it. Sadly we have no chance now as we emigrated to Perth Western Australia so as we enjoy the videos they do make us feel slightly homesick. If your sittin still you can always pop another 2 or 3 foot (I’m in America lol) flue pipe on and usually fixes low draft problems every time. Creosote creation is also caused by slow flue.

Aye, ice is always cold (bit like rain is wet!) hence the old saying, me barnacles are frozen solid. A Tip here, quite hot water with a few drops of Fairy liquid mixed in it and poured over surfaces (outside) to remove frost & ice, the water won't freeze again as you've raised the freezing point at which it can freeze (by much as maybe 8 or 9 degrees C). Easy eh! Anyway, something to look forwards to and thats summer, its a Thursday again this year!
