Katy Perry fundamentally captures “cringe millennial” energy that was considered quirky and endearing 10-15 years ago that just comes across as tired and embarrassing now. I think it’s clear that she really was just a product of the time, and not the pop chameleon with her finger on the pulse of culture that maybe we expected from someone with as many hits that she had.

Katy really shot herself in the foot by working with Dr Luke again. People would forgive it being a bad album if she hadn't worked with him, and they'd probably forgive her working with him if the album had been good. Instead, she's ruined her, already shaky, reputation by making a bad album with a horrible person
@zac87073 ай бұрын
Her working with him appears to be an attempt to get some kind of mainstream success again (hence running back to the producer of her biggest hits) which makes this album feel even more soulless😒.

Then doubling down in the face of criticism by making it unequivocally clear she WANTED to work with him, and have this abuser write lyrics on an album themed around woman's empowerment and experience
@balldalt3 ай бұрын
I don't think that has anything to do with it. Kim Petras worked with him and she seems to be liked. Also this is Katy's third bomb in a row. Comebacks are extremely rare in the music business so she's probably never going to score a big hit again.
@makecaptainamericagreatagain3 ай бұрын
@balldalt that's what I'm saying. People like Kim Petras' music, so they look past the fact that she works with him. If this album was good, it probably wouldn't be a big deal, but it was bad to begin with, so people are going to see the fact that she's working with Dr luke as more of a negative. The album was never going to be as big as her previous albums because of the previous flops, but the fact that she worked with Dr Luke and produced a terrible album did more to cement that legacy. If the album was exactly the same but with a different producer, it would just be another flop, but this is a flop and a bad moral judgment

She never survived Lorde. Neither did P!nk, but at least she kind of accepted it. Katy Perry chasing the success of 2012 is making her seem out of touch and desperate. The only reason she’s working with Dr. Luke is because he was involved with her most successful music. When you chase your younger self and try to seem younger than you are, it’s off-putting. As someone who composes music, creating happy and uplifting songs that don't come off as cheesy or childish is quite a difficult task, unlike melancholic songs that flow when we're sad and are naturally taken more seriously. I'm saying this because Katy Perry's 'brand' has always been that of the uplifting artist, the one whose songs motivate you-radio hits that appeal to everyone from kids to older adults. She marked my teenage years with viral songs like 'California Gurls' and 'Firework,' and it's sad to see her creative process decline. ❌ It's even more disappointing when we look back and see that the 'Witness' and 'Smile' eras, despite being controversial, delivered quality in some tracks. Some people say she has been facing a boycott since the 'Witness' era due to her political stances, and I don’t doubt it - the music industry has a poor track record of relationships between producers, managers and artists. I read in a comment above that her career is starting to resemble the mess that is Jennifer Lopez’s music career. I agree, but I think it’s even worse because J.Lo has the advantage of her 'mi gente' Latino background- being a girl from the Bronx who is deeply connected to her Latin roots (or at least tries to be)-and she has never focused on producing high-quality music. In conclusion, while I feel sad about it, I don’t sympathize. She has a lot of money and had plenty of time to deliver the best pop dance album of 2024. She has far more resources than the girls of the new generation, like Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter. If she hasn't made a good album, it's because she didn't want to or has accepted that she’s not a great professional in her only occupation. The highlights of the album (for me, but I see that others who listened to it are saying the same thing) are the beat of the song 'Gimme Gimme' and the verse by rapper JID-and rap isn't even in my top three favorite genres. Bad attempt, Katy, and good luck with your next album.

Ya. It’s called don’t work with Dr Luke and don’t half a** anything. Especially when nobody wanted a Katy Perry record right now, she should’ve brought the thunder but she didn’t. Katy really needs to take notes from Lady Gaga on how to rejuvenate her career and stat respected.
@OYJluv3 ай бұрын
Lady Gaga always took her music and art seriously even when critics flamed her for doing so. Thats why people still respect gaga she never made of her career a circus and a money grab. Joanne was a slump for gaga but rhat album made people see that she was actually talented and that she could be even more deep with her intentions. Thats how lady gaga survived the millenial cringe, tapping deeper into her artistry. Katy has never taken herself too seriously and her music just sounds like that. Sabrina Carpenter is an unserious singer but somehow she is very serious about her artistry and music. Sabrina is who Katy perry should watch and take notes of.
@dreamyvolcano32723 ай бұрын
@@OYJluv I strongly agree about Sabrina! She's a silly, playful and overall kinda generic pop artist but her works still give the impression that they have a sense of intention both in sound and persona

Seems like this alternative pop renaissance started with Carly Rae Jepsen’s Emotion in 2015
@jadesded3 ай бұрын
I'd argue early PC Music scene ie: Sophie, GFOTY etc. in tandem deconstructed club, and neoperreo set this wave off, as alternative pop now is just the underground from the mid-2010s as the queer to white woman ally pipeline continues. But ya Carly Rae Jepson is based, Id say her and Rebecca Black were more a swan song for the era of that sound.

Thing is Katy's music has kind of always sounded like this. There has never really been much depth to any of her songs. The times have simply changed and people aren't into that kind of sound if it's anything current. It's nostalgic to listen to this sort of music when we listen to the old hits and her old albums but her still doing it now gets rid of that nostalgic feeling and simply feels soulless and boring. There is nothing new and interesting about this album so it makes it forgettable and like it's been released 10 years too late.

This album genuinely shocks me. I figured she had learned a LOT from her “Witness” era, so when more “purposeful pop” manifested with the debut of “Woman’s World,” I was gobsmacked (and yes I know she said it’s satirical but like… that isn’t entirely clear, so it sort of fails as satire). Katy Perry has now made three flops in a row, so I’m thinking she’s probably done now. She’ll probably just continue her career as a “media personality,” judging singing competitions and such, and doing the occasional feature. Maybe The Voice has an opening? 😅

i think its really interesting that pop is now being led by newer faces/lesser known artists - its been such a striking shift of newer artists taking up the main stage of pop while major pop musicians from the 2010s/early 2020s (taylor swift, camilla cabello, katy perry) are missing the mark this year by creating artificial and apathetic music. are they bored or just uninspired? it seems like many big names have given up on pursuing artistic merit or met creative fatigue (beyonce is an exception) but still released music for money.

this new album and also the previous ones really sadden me. I mean, it's Katy Perry, she's been in a long time relationship, she is a mother, she was once one of the biggest names in the industry, she has faced several ups and downs. She'd have so many things to talk about in her music, so much potential for great music. Yet nothing she releases really reflects that. I remember really liking "Chained to the Rythm" and her intention to make "purposeful pop", but the next song she released back than was "Bon Appetit" and it was like ok so she herself is still chained to said rythm ...

Listened to this album and, even though I think “Woman’s World” and “Lifetimes” are garbage singles, I didn’t hate the album as a whole. I honestly kind of dug how each song led into one another. I do agree that the lyrics are kind of vapid, but I at least feel like all of these songs belong on the same album, unlike with “Smile”. I guess I must be a part of the group willing to give objectively subpar projects a pass. 😅
