Dylan was not the writer. The song is a folksong that's been around for over a century, and has been performed by many. No one really knows who wrote the song, but from its earliest history it's been presented as a woman telling her story. Listen again to the lyrics as sung by Dylan and note that the original words ARE phrased from a woman's point of view. Of course, Bob is no girl. He was being true to the original lyrics and story. Note that the lyrics in the version sung by The Animals are from a man's point of view. Artistic license is often taken when this folksong is sung by a male performer, and the lyrics changed to tell the story as if the main character was a man telling his own sad story, that of a fellow who had fallen into an unsavory life, tried to escape, but who realized the hold that the drinking, gambling, drugs, and debauchery still had over him. The song is a warning, whether from a woman's point of view or a man's. Dylan relates that warning with such rawness and emotion that it's startling. He is so gifted an artist, giving an interpretation so pure, that he chose to keep the original lyrics from a woman's point of view, faithfully retelling the story. As a folk singer and storyteller himself, he expressly delivered the words of resignation and lament of the female facing her fate to go back to the life of a prostitute in New Orleans. Bob Dylan is a most unusual man in many ways and an icon in music and society. He is a songwriter, poet, rebel, activist, creative artist, gifted musician, thinker, observer, and brilliant interpreter of the human condition, all demonstrated by his own profound works, and how he covers those of others. A true legend! Thank you for your reaction, even if you were given some misinformation about the song's authorship. Bob Dylan is one artist who will continue to surprise us in performances and recordings that are stunning, eye-opening, compelling, and which make us deeply contemplate what he shares and how he reveals it musically. It causes us to admit we've underestimated him, even when we already hold his gifts in such high respect. If we've ever listened to his words and music, even one of his songs, it's clear he demonstrates incredible talent, but we discover again and again that Dylan is always raising the bar.

Thanks for that. Bob is just unbelievable, how could he come out of nowhere and be as good as he is at like 19 yrs old. Playing the guitar, harmonica, singing, writing songs with a stunning vocabulary, story and rhyme. I mean look at "Song To Woody" Which he sang for Woody on his deathbed. Something really special about Bob Dylan.

Dylan learned the song from Dave Von Ronk, a contemporary folk singer in Greenwich Village in the early 60's. Of course, Dave didn't write it either.

Bob Dylan's first album in 1961. Freight Train Blues, also from this album, is a fabulous vocal as is Fixin' To Die.

This is a old folk song, performed over the years by many in many ways, Dylan used Dave Van Ronk's interpretation of the song, which Dave was performing in Greenwich NY, in turn the Animals used Bob's album's version (org Dave's). Dave Van Ronk did forgive Bob for using his version, which was performed in the "Woman's" perspective.

Next, try "Blind Willie McTell" or "Simple Twist of Fate", both written by Bob Dylan.

That's the thing about Bob Dylan. He totally LIVES what he is singing, and that makes the sound so REAL. That's why people love his music and his singing so much. The animals did a great musical performance, but Dylan brought the song to life in his voice in a way nobody else has done in a recording. And the original traditional song was the tragic story of a young woman, so that's how he sang it.

This man Bob Dylan has so many incredible singing styles. Ha was 21 yo when he recorded this but sounds like an old blues singer. You might like " blund Willie Mctell" if you like this.

Great comparative reaction. Yes, Dylan's version is much more grounded in the lineage of the traditional song.

Dylan did not write this song. According to google: “The song was first collected in Appalachia in the 1930s, but probably has its roots in traditional English folk song. It is listed as number 6393 in the Roud Folk Song Index.” Van Ronk arrangement edit In late 1961, Bob Dylan recorded the song for his debut album, released in March 1962. That release had no songwriting credit, but the liner notes indicate that Dylan learned this version of the song from Dave Van Ronk. In an interview for the documentary No Direction Home, Van Ronk said that he was intending to record the song and that Dylan copied his version. Van Ronk recorded it soon thereafter for the album Just Dave Van Ronk. Well, don’t underestimate Dylan…. He is one of the best. He didn’t write it… he just lived his songs. Check out Bob Dylan’s video of a performance at the new port folk festival of Mr. Tambourine man.
