The audience was hostile during that tour because he'd just gone electric from folk, which they saw as betrayal. One of the most important moments in rock history for sure.

This song comes from Dylan’s frustration with a reporter(s) who know nothing about him, the changing society of the 60’s and try to put him in a box. But, of course with most Dylan songs his scope is so much wider and it’s a critique of the establishment at large. He is at a point in his life and career where he is controlled by no one, the press, the record companies, or his fans. Much of his fan base was upset from his transition from folk music to electric rock n roll. He is truly traveling to his own beat. A true artist then and now.

Nobody writes lyrics anything like Dylan. His phrasing is also unique and the tones of his voice are One Of A Kind. Before you move on to other artist you should do these two from The Master Story Teller..... "Ballad Of Frankie Lee And Judas Priest".... "Who Killed Davy Moore"..... That one is going to blow your mind..... Oh BTW.... "Hurricane"

This is from Dylan’s iconic 1966 tour Dylan went electric a year earlier and in the eyes of quite a lot of his fans he “abandoned” his folk roots and they were shocked and boo’ing and heckling him and Dylan played into it by giving passionate and very loud performances to piss them off more it’s punk before punk even became a thing. Dylan was also amped up on amphetamines and probably all sorts of other concoctions maybe speed he was hardly sleeping and was massively strung out after this tour so much so that he literally moved up to a farm and didn’t go back on tour for 7 years.

My take on meaning: Mr. Jones has just walked into a room full of stoners, and the stoners immediately recognize that Mr. Jones does not belong there. It's an insult to Mr. Jones. In 50s beatnik language, Mr. Jones is a square.

These bands you are watching are making feel old I saw most of them in my teens during the 70s. a whiter shade of pale was my late mother and i's favourite song released when I was 6 years old. it's time to get you dancing to a 3 piece Swedish trio DIRTY LOOPS, They are JONAH NILSSON on vocals and keyboards, one of the greatest underrated singers, Michael Jackson/ Stevie wonder style funky vibes vocals, HENRIK LINDER one of today's great bass players, and AARON MELLERGARD same again one of today's great drummer's. where to start! DIRTY LOOPS are looked after by the legendary QUINCY JONES, They do an UNBELIEVABLE version of Michael Jackson's THRILLER, a collaboration with guitar player CORY WONG and his musicians. also during this recording session have a look at FOLLOW THE LIGHT and the amazing instrumental TURBO, I call their music ' happy feel good music, if you are having a bad day watch a dirty loops video. a song with a great title that will make you smile and dance in your chair WORK SHIT OUT, then ROCK YOU, WORLD ON FIRE, if you like a slow ballad have a look at JONAH NILSSON singing BREAKDOWN an amazing performance. another few great tunes HIT ME with some great bass playing from HENRIK LINDER, another short instrumental with an unusual title SONGS FOR LOVERS COFFEE BREAK IS OVER , great drumming from Aaron Mellergard, Then it's time to go to church with the 8 MINUTE masterpiece NEXT TO YOU, if any one likes gospel style singers this one is for you, also great performance by drummer Aaron Mellergard who is also on vocal harmonies with Jonah Nilsson' . I know you will love DIRTY LOOPS , all 3 are classically trained, I first came across them with the video JONAH NILSSON-DIAMOND RING, a video featuring a cameo guitar solo from my favourite guitarist STEVE VAI, and also during this video is Jonah Nilsson's mentor QUINCY JONES. just a few to start your DIRTY LOOPS journey. best wishes from the north east coast of England.

Great selection. 1966 was the year Dylan famously went electric with his music and pissed off a lot of his traditionalist folk fans who felt he was selling out. I think some of the local footage is reaction to that. Of course everyone came around eventually to his new music and the rest as they say is history.

Strangely enough, not everyone. I live in NYC and I have an elderly British gentleman who lives next door to me. He heard Dylan’s music coming from my apartment and mentioned to me that he saw Dylan many times in England in the early 60’s. he then went on to say “until he picked up that damn electric guitar then I stopped following him”. I said “wow” I didn’t know any of you were still around”.
@keef7224

Actually he “went electric” in January 1965 when he recorded a handful of electric tunes that would end up on that year’s LP release Bringing It All Back Home. But Dylan was also playing electric rock & roll way back in high school in Minnesota long before he ever even heard Odetta’s debut album and became a folkie.

Need to know what the original definition of "geek" was to understand some of this. A geek was originally a circus performer who bit the heads off of chickens as an act. Long way from what it is now. So it goes along with some of the others, the sword-swallower was another such act. Cf. Like a Rolling Stone, "never turned around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns when they all did tricks for you", etc.

Hey JM, I’m sure you noticed that along with the brilliant lyrics from Bob Dylan and amazing stories the accompanying music arrangements are always suburb. Whether it is just his guitar and harmonica or when “The Band’ backs him up with some of the finest instrumental talent, Guitars, Piano, Hammond B3 Organ, various percussion/drumming, backing vocal harmonies. Each song is a Musical Masterpiece on it’s..... Bob Dylan -- Guitars, Piano Harmonica "THE BAND"- Robbie Robertson -- Guitars, Rick Danko -- Bass, Levon Helm -- Drums/percussion, Garth Hudson -- Organ, Richard Manual -- Drums, Piano

It's as if all of 1960s youth, as one, said to "the man," the establishment, the older generation, etc. "Something is happening but you don't know what it is, do you, Mr. Jones?" And if that older establishment generation was being honest, yeah, they had no idea what was happening around them. The didn't see, the groundswell of youthful counterculture that was coming. A few years later, The Beatles, specifically songwriter John Lennon, would reference this song in "Yer Blues" with the lyric: "The eagle picks my eye / The worm he licks my bone / I feel so suicidal / Just like Dylan's Mr Jones!" Great reaction!

You walk into the room with your pencil in your hand You see somebody naked and you say, "Who is that man?" You try so hard but you don't understand Just what you will say when you get home Because something is happening here but you don't know what it is Do you, Mr. Jones? You raise up your head and you ask, "Is this where it is?" And somebody points to you and says, "It's his" And you say, "What's mine?" and somebody else says, "Well, what is?" And you say, "Oh my God, am I here all alone?" But something is happening and you don't know what it is Do you, Mr. Jones? You hand in your ticket and you go watch the geek Who immediately walks up to you when he hears you speak And says, "How does it feel to be such a freak?" And you say, "Impossible!" as he hands you a bone And something is happening here but you don't know what it is Do you, Mr. Jones? You have many contacts among the lumberjacks To get you facts when someone attacks your imagination But nobody has any respect, anyway they already expect you to all give a check To tax-deductible charity organizations Ah, you've been with the professors and they've all liked your looks With great lawyers you have discussed lepers and crooks You've been through all of F. Scott Fitzgerald's books You're very well-read, it's well-known But something is happening here and you don't know what it is Do you, Mr. Jones? Well, the sword swallower, he comes up to you and then he kneels He crosses himself and then he clicks his high heels And without further notice, he asks you how it feels And he says, "Here is your throat back, thanks for the loan" And you know something is happening but you don't know what it is Do you, Mr. Jones? Now, you see this one-eyed midget shouting the word "Now" And you say, "For what reason?" and he says, "How" And you say, "What does this mean?" and he screams back, "You're a cow! Give me some milk or else go home" And you know something's happening but you don't know what it is Do you, Mr. Jones? Well, you walk into the room like a camel, and then you frown You put your eyes in your pocket and your nose on the ground There ought to be a law against you comin' around You should be made to wear earphones 'Cause something is happening and you don't know what it is Do you, Mr. Jones?

Glad YOU decided to do THIS performance of the song--as opposed to the studio version, which is also good but does not carry the emotional impact that this performance has. This video was shot during the last leg of Dylan's 1965-1966 world tour and seems, to me, to clearly show the effects of an outrageous recording and touring schedule: three complete albums from 1965-1966, one, "Blonde on Blonde" even being a double album (and considered by most critics to be his best album) plus the touring. I heard or read somewhere that Dylan didn't just burn the candle at both ends; he also took a blowtorch to the middle. Drugs were alleged to be used to help him cope with the stress, intensity, and demands of his life during this period of his career. Not too long after this performance, Dylan had a motorcycle accident--which may well have saved him.

Lord have mercy, dylan was medicated up to his eyeballs on this tour...literally name a drug that around back then & he was on some combination...including speed which often made him stay up for days, so, add sleep deprivation to the mix....check out, or react to on your channel “no direction home” which is martin scorsese’s (whos films include: goodfellas,,taxi driver, raging bull, the departed) 4 hour documentary on the first 6 years of Dylan's career, ...if u watch it off-stream, youll hear songs, but it wont give too many away totally, there will still be plenty to react to...many in the film youve reacted to already

I just watched another "Reactor" two brothers do Righteous Bros "Unchained Melody".... it was 2 minutes and 30 seconds of complete nonsense before they started the song, then they paused after 14 seconds, and again at 26 seconds and 6 more pauses about how good he sings, They used the "N" word five times, the "F" word three times and the "S" word twice. They totally ruined/destroyed the performance. Why I will never be back to their channel.
