I'm not sure why tilling would ever be considered controversial. I thought the point of no till was just for ease. We don't own a tractor or have anyone to do it for us so we built raised beds which are about 4ft tall which is better for my chronic pain.

Soil rehab isn’t a quick thing. There’s nothing wrong with doing an initial till to help it along when it’s heavily compacted and then going no till afterwards. Soil needs air to help water penetrate and so that the soil microbiology can thrive. Just focus on no till and building the soil going forward and the soil will reward you with health and as a result a bounty of food. And conquering the bamboo without some mechanical help will be an impossible mission. If you can maintain it in the places where you have soil with contaminates or are prone to flooding though it will actually help you, as it removes toxins from the soil, and reduces the risk of erosion from flooding. I would be installing a specialist bamboo root barrier around the areas where you want to keep it though, so that you can stop the spread yet still reap the benefits. The kitchen looks fantastic - you should be very proud!! Can’t wait to see your African adventures!

Nothing I love more than spending a portion of my Sunday morning drinking coffee with all of y’all! How appropriate that, for us, the tractor is showing up on January 1, 2023. It really depends on the plant and if there are others in the general area so pollinators can get the job done or not. Some plants are of specofic genus so it would require at least one of each. Some are selfpolinating.

Stone fruit trees do not cross pollinate, but you can hand pollinate. Also, you can plant at least two of the same types of trees so that bees will pollinate for you. It's possible too that if you have neighbors that have the same types of fruit trees that the bees will pollinate your trees also. You're always a joy to watch.

With trees you need to see how far out they will eventually be and account for that spread with other plants around it. When placing bee hives you need to make sure they are out of the wind and drafts.

Depending on what raspberry, redcurrants and blackcurrants your doing or having. I would use the bamboo canes to make a dozen arches, make some holes the same width apart on both sides and using green netting. Create a greenhouse with a door and plant your fruit trees in there. That will keep the animals and birds off your bushes! 😉😉😉 PS. Don't forget to use horse manure. Also if you have a water butt. Grab an old onion sack with a brick or stone in, fill with horse manure, tye a string around the top. Fill the barrel with water and let it sink, tye it off around the top, and raise and sink it. Water your bushes and tomatoe plants with it. The harvest will nearly double.

Hello. Just watched you plant your trees and bushes, so this tip is a bit belated but typically you want the root ball slightly above ground level with dirt packed around so the roots can grow deep and have plenty of drainage so as not to have root rot. Found your show a month or so back. Truly have enjoyed going back and watching all your travels as well as your adventures on the farm. Watching Crusoe being so involved in all the goings on has been a delight. He’s such a cute little character and Sawyer adorable as well. Third, watch you makes me remember at your ago my husband and I bought a 5 acre mini farm, I had a one acre garden where I planted 250 tomatoe plants, 40 squash, 20 plants, 20 eggpant, many green beans,peas, potatoes, onion, corn, and I was like you having a dear sweet man who live next door and he help teach me all about growing. I had one daughter, age 9 and three sons, 1,3,4. My garden was my heaven. I just loved weeding , it was so peaceful and no one wanted to weed, so this was my place to have quiet time. Don't get me wromg, I just loved being with my family, but we all need our time. I loved the fall when I would harvest it all and canned it for the whole year. We also raised a beefer every two years for our meat. I totally loved teaching my children to live off the land and to respect it. You are going to do amazing more wonderful thing with your sweet family. My children are now doing the same for their children. Please enjoy yout trip home Tara. Great progress. Definitely a good idea to till at the beginning as it would be just too hard the other way for you. As you see with your neighbours it works in the end. About chickens.....................I have had chickens for years and the main thing is to prevent them getting into your vege garden. I had a 1 mtr chicken wire fence around a small paddock and clipped their wings so they couldn't fly over it. Inside the paddock I had lots of fruit trees and grounds covers and it worked well. I used to rescue battery hens for many years and give them a free range life.Good luck.

Hi. I love the way your farm life is reaping the benefits of multiple generations - what has been established before, what has been left behind for you to find uses for around the farm and in the not garage, you and your own growing family's contributions, your wonderful family minded neighbours and all the riches they are bringing yo your life. So much knowledge and such readiness to share and learn is heart warming. As for the proposed chicken coop. Having a section that is a concrete floor under the roosting timber bars will pay dividends. Because it allows you to harvest the chook poo super easily with a spade and barrow.
