I’ve watched this episode several times, and am constantly struck by the lead detective in the Ewell case. How do these people see some of the ugliest of the human character in the abyss motivating every single murder, and somehow keep their humanity?? I couldn’t bear to deal with the death scenes, or the remnants of what was once human, and keep my sanity! I don’t think it’s possible to thank them enough for what they do!

Dana Ewell was not half as smart as he thought he was. He laughed at the cops and said they were too stupid to solve the case but he was stupid enough to say he did not know Joel when Joel had been living in his house and he was paying for expensive flying lessons for Joel. Apparently he was too stupid to know that it was very easy for the cops to learn that Joel was living with him and that he was the money behind Joel's lessons. He also was stupid enough to communicate quite openly with Joel by phone not realizing the cops were listening to those conversations. Obviously he was greedy because he was willing to murder his entire family so he could get his hands on their money but besides being greedy he was stupid as well. Pity they don't have designer suits for him to wear where he is living these days. If Timothy Boczkowski's father had not mentioned that this was the second of his son's wives to die by drowning it is possible that Timothy would have gotten away with his first wife's murder and he might have never been charged for his second wife's murder either. Back in the days before computers it was much easier to get away with multiple murders than you might think. If a man murdered one wife and moved a hundred or so miles away where no one knew him or his first wife and then he married and murdered a second wife it was quite possible that police would never have learned about the first wife's murder and so with no pattern established they would have no reason to suspect him of killing his second wife. Computers put an end to that because now there is no way to hide from your past. But Boczkowski's first wife died in 1986 and his second wife in 1990 and both of these deaths occurred before computers were being widely used. I am glad his father made that throwaway comment because it caused police to go back and research the death of his first wife and the two deaths were so similar that it didn't take them long to conclude that he murdered BOTH wives. I bet he wishes Dad had kept his mouth shut!

There was a "Black Widower" named Henry Colin Campbell (d. 1930). He was already married, but used a matchmaking service to find his victims. He would "marry" them, steal their money and other possessions, and then abandon them. He was caught when two of his victims turned up dead. It is believed they were not the only ones he had murdered. He had been doing this for about 20 years, so there's no telling how many victims he had. George Joseph Smith (The Brides in the Bath) did the same thing 20 years earlier. Both men were executed. Back then, you could really get away with this sort of thing.

Except here these guys forget that we are supposed to be living in an civilized society with penalties for doing so...what a complete nutter .

I can't understand why they plea bargain with straight up killers caught dead to right and house them. That's what the death penalty is for so our prison system isn't over crowded. Pleas are for the ones who may be innocent.
@tundrawomansays50672 жыл бұрын
The criminal justice system couldn’t function without Plea Deals. And sometimes, you need to offer a less onerous alternative to some horrid criminals to get to the even more horrid ones. Even if a Perp does receive a death penalty there are automatic mandated appeals so it may be years, decades, before the potential (and that’s again, “potential”) death sentence is carried out if it ever is. I know it’s minimally depressing and maximally infuriating but over 95% of convicted criminals including these lifetime criminals are eventually returned to the community. I find this reality even more odious and deeply disturbing considering the recidivism rate.
