Laicité and secularism are not equivalent terms. Laicité is freedom FROM religion, in societies where religion wielded (and might still wield in some cases) suffocating political power (Québec was a good example). Secularism, is the system where shared values and rules of behavior are based on evidence, not on faith.

If the Establishment Clause applied to Protestants only, i.e., Congress could support Protestants, then logically, the Free Exercise Clause only protects Protestants since the meaning of the Free Exercise Clause is dependent on the Establishment Clause. Catholics, Jews, Muslims, etc al don’t, then, have a constitutionally-protected right. If you wanna play the Originalist game, you have to take the good with the bad.

Charles is describing the two principles in such a way that they cannot be understood as particular forms of canonizing, but rather, are the means through which as a whole, can enable a society to come together as state of neutrality, that of a diversity and freedom of conscious, by which only respect can accomplish. This doesn't limit the state but strengthens it, by acknowledging the very similarities in which it engenders.

Very interesting, but is freedom of religion the choice of the person in question? I mean, being born into a religion is not the choice of the child who was brought up in that particular religion. To have total freedom, is to choose for themselves what religion to follow, or no religion at all. To truly have freedom, you have to be free to choose, not have parents choose just because they also got chosen for them by their parents the religion they are now indoctrinating into their children.

"is freedom of religion the choice of the person in question?" Are we not all indoctrinated in one way or another?

Religion splits this nation so much. Don't mix religion and politics.
