Jamie "died" in Culloden. His spirit travel 200 yrs as he promised to look for Claire. However, he was brought back to life and continue living in 1700s. As for seeing the future. It was mentioned in the book that he has second sight. He knows Brianna has diamond shape birthmark at the back of her ear even if he hasn't met her yet.

@@higginsba ever since season 6 ended they told us they were going to make up for such a short season 6 by having more episodes in season seven. And they let us think that was actually what was going to happen. But what has happened is they're calling to separate seasons season 7 and that will see the last half in a year. I feel like we've been lied to for many months. I remember so many people being upset that season 6 was so short and so that's when they presented us having a season 7 with 18 episodes not telling us that the second part wasn't going to be a year after the first part. To me that's a whole other season.

Yes and in the last two episodes Jamie has talked about seeing both clear and his grandson living in the future. He described Jeremiah picking up a telephone and ask him to speak to his grandda. I've only been able to read the first two books I don't know if I'm glad or not. Sometimes I can be a little too literal and all the differences would bother me. Last season was such a disappointment to me. In episode 1 this season seemed really rushed but after the second episode I understand why they did that. So they could reach the point quickly of where they are now. I am upset that they've been telling us since last year that season 7 was going to be 18 episodes. Then when the show comes around they tell us that it's going to be 8 episodes now and eight episodes in 2024. So that's bulshit that's the same as if it was just going to be another season in 2024 but they're calling it a continuatio of season 7 instead of calling it season 8

In the book Jamie has several dreams of the future. It's often used to keep track of characters in a different timeline without breaking the current plot. While Jamie doesn't know if the visions are real, when we actually move to a different timeline they corroborate his dreams. If timetraveling is in the bloodline, it makes sense that there are other gifts out there (and we do encounter a few). Briana also gets the occasional dream so she's inherited both her parents gifts.

I think Jamie came close to dying at Culloden, & had a near-death/out of body experience. I think that's how he traveled forward & saw Claire. I fully believe that Jamie & Claire were truly meant to be together -- soul mates. I justice the characters & their interwoven stories.

But even he acknowledged that was a dream. Obviously a special dream that had some reality to it due to their Familial bond. But he didn't go yo the stones, he wasn't near-death ect so it seems pretty safe to make nothing more if that than what he said: a dream, a connection, premonition ect.

I'm going to watch for it but I don't remember it happening that way at all in the series. It may be that way in the book but from what I remember it didn't show Jamie see Brianna but he did ask Claire or say something declare at one point about the birthmark. That's why I like comments sections though because we all perceive things differently or pay more attention to one thing or another and this gives us something to look for as we're watching it.

I think Jamie's ghost is just from the 1945 timeline before Claire has gone back. At 25, in her original 1945 timeline, he has already died at Culloden. His ghost would have been roaming around (his 200 years of purgatory that he's already mentioned, not knowing that he's already done it in her 1945 timeline), and sees her in the window. No previous connection, but his ghost falls in love with her then, at first sight (big assumption on whether a ghost can fall in love, let alone exist, but hey, we're talking about time travel through standing stones!). The spiritual connection between Jamie's physical body and his lovelorn ghost is what pulls her back to his time, since they've established that you need someone on the other side to pull you.

This is a great thought ... we have assumed that Claire's time travels have NOT changed any events... but what if Jamie originally died on Culloden (hence the ghost) but Claire's travel kept him alive, which created a conduit through time. But maybe that's overthinking it!

But then why aren't their connections between everyone of every time every night? If all it takes for a non-time traveller to travel is to go to sleep and Dream and/or have someone calling you or thinking of you or be wandering near the stones, what's to stop everyone that gets an ancestry hint and falls asleep thinking about some mystery concerning great-great grandma from being haunted by her? It would be cool, admittedly if that's all it took to time travel; dream. I'd definitely be heading to 1700 Scotland to see if anyone back then really was a Jamie, to many Randalls today! Lol. But I'm not sure I'd make it, no Novocaine, in door plumbing, no washing machine. I wish I was that strong but I'm honest enough to know my limits!

She's said repeatedly (and with increasing annoyance because people keep floating this theory) that the two scenes are unrelated. The scene in Inverness is Jamie's ghost, not "dream travel." I hate this channel's dumb speculatons without any research.

It really pisses me off that they're trying to get everybody to buy into the fact that season 7 has 16 episodes. But we don't get to see the last eight episodes until a year from now. To me every year has been a new season. So to me this is like they're having season 7 now and we'll see season 8 next year. It makes no sense to me how they're trying to pass off two seasons and calling it one season. They've been lying ever since season 6 ended and they told us season 7 would have 16 episodes and until this premiered they've had us thinking that's how it was going to be. They were telling us that saying it was to make up for such a short season 6 and used it to give us something to look forward to. They can call it whatever they want but the truth is it's two separate seasons if you have to wait a year to see the second half.

I think it was insignificant just foreshadowing to give the readers a clue what time period Claire was going to travel to nd Diana Gabaldon hadn't figured it out yet. I wasn't even sure it was Jamie, but just a Highlander dressed in the clothing of the time. Many ghosts were roaming around that evening. Who knows if Frank instead stumbled upon a time warp scene - a Highlander ghost (could be Murdoch since that is the person she first meets instead of Jamie, and the way Murdoch was dressed) was looking at something else in another time-a snapshot out of time. Frank happened upon the scene where Murdoch would meet his wife.

In answer to someone's response, we viewers don't know how or when the TV plans to end the series. They would be smart not to assume their own end, for everyone's sake. Perhaps they hope Diana finishes the 10th book in time for filming. But we don't know and we all just have to wait and see.

I think that Jamie is the kind of person that Steven Bonnet said a person who has one foot in death and one in life because Jamie has come so close to death many times. I think Jamie was a ghost who died at Culloden and saw Claire and fell in love and because in the book the night he saw her was a night the veil was thin so spirits were able to rome the streets and he connected with her because he felt she was different and then when she went to the stones to collect the flowers she was transported in the past and they saw each other and fell in love. He can dream the past and future because he has one foot in death and the other in life. Or he could’ve waited for her in purgatory for 200 years and saw her because she told him the date she walked thru the stones and maybe spiritually guided her to the stones.

In the beginning...a couple goes on a second honeymoon to Scotland. One does research of his family history and visits castles and historical sites and folklore and they have lots of information to write a novel or two. We are enjoying fiction. It's all fiction. Now relax and enjoy....the authors have the liberty to make anything happen, regardless of reality and we are buying it cause it's lovely to escape into another world.

My theory: Jamie and Claire both died somewhere in the 18th century. Jamie's ghost appeared to create an anchor. For Frank, so he would remember having seen the ghost and do the things he did to make it likely for Claire to find Jamie in history and go back to him. For Claire, to see her again, and to create an anchor for her to go to him the first time. She saved his life soon after she met him, then again after Wentworth Prison, and many more times after that. Jamie knew he needed her for his life and his love. He knew they belonged together. And finally, for Bree, Roger, Jemmy, Mandy, and Davy. Jamie would have known by the time he died that the only way he and Claire could have their family together was for Claire to come and meet him the first time in 1743. Isn't fiction fun? Looking forward to the 10th book now.

How interesting! I don’t recall… did they give any indication in the tv series how much time had passed between when we saw Jamie near death on the battlefield and when we saw him captured awaiting execution? It would be cool if we saw Jamie’s ghost moving through time and visiting Claire at different points in her life. From when she was young and traveling with her uncle, to nursing school, to that car accident, to her in the war, then back in Scotland at the Inn and also at the stones picking the Forget Me Nots. I would love it if Jamie’s ghost saw her picking those flowers at the stones and when he returned to life made it his mission to plant those flowers so they’d be there for her to find. I never noticed if the flowers were there in the past when a) she chose to stay and b) when she left before Culloden. Definitely have to rewatch some episodes and scrutinize the set! Oh well. Tough job but someone has to do it. 😊

Claire was not physically "in" an automobile accident. The "accident" you saw represents how Clare interpreted what she felt like while traveling to 1743 Scotland where the story of her and Jamie begins.

Claire was in Scotland at the same time as Jaime' Ghost 200 years in the future at the age of 23 of when they first met during Al Sahaim ? The one time of year when Spirits can wander, Claire went back to the Stones the following day to look for herbs & saw the blue 4 o'clock flowers 💙 The night beforehand, Frank had seen the Highlander Ghost, looking up at Claire as she was brushing her hair. This certainly needs to be resolved. It's one of the main reasons I was Soooo completely hooked!!! It would be a huge mistake to not explain this. That would result in just another series (and movies do it too) leaving your audience hanging and upset. So far it's been a stellar series!!!

In "bees" Jamie also mentions that he had been in purgatory before and that it wasn't so bad just before the battle at King's mountain. Throughout the books Jamie's ability to "visit" people who are in the future is shown repeatedly. Jemmy and Mandy can see him when he does. Gabaldon confirms that Jamie has second sight. Having someone on the other side to draw you helps, but isn't necessary for travel. It was actually likely Black Jack that pulled Claire to that time, as Frank and the Reverend had just been discussing him in depth with Claire. Which is why 202/3 years into the past rather than the standard 200.

Jamie's ghost or Spirit was freed on Samine/ Halloween, to do as they pleased Mrs. Baird told Frank & Claire Jamie's Ghost went back to fetch the love of his life. He Couldn't go closer because the blood over the door. I apologize for this being long and I know that means many will not read it! I do believe as @karenchua9226 said that Jamie died at Culloden, and that his “ghost” was fulfilling his promise of living in purgatory 200 years in search of Claire. However I take a slightly different path after that based on some metaphysical beliefs some cultures and peoples hold about how past lives work. Very often, when one reincarnates according to some traditions,they do not recall their past lives. They may only see snip-its or have deja vu at times. Therefore, Claire did not recall a past life in Scotland or with Jamie when she was born of her mother into her modern incarnation. But, something in the Universe knew her past life…and the Universe loves love… something led her to Scotland and something led her to the stones. Jamie on the other hand, sent a loved one through the stones to live another life. (Much as some believe babies come here from ‘somewhere else’.) She was birthed into a new incarnation that did not recall the “Outlander” past life. Jamie made an oath based upon love (which the Universe loves), suffered a death in his incarnation on this plane, and had a soul that thrived to fulfill that oath and love. Therefore, he was an un-embodied spirit or a “ghost” when he left this plane. In the spirit world, what looks to us like hours (or episodes 😂) is in fact seconds. His soul/ghost looks for his love, finds her, sees that she is on the path to reunite with him, and wills itself not to die at Culloden because he now knows that she is going to come back to him. This is confirmed for him when he sees the vision (manifestation) of Claire coming toward him as he lay on the battlefield…and the rabbit…which is in some cultures considered not only a symbol of fertility, but of legacy and family too: they will have a family and a legacy.: he knows that if he only stays alive, she will eventually find him because she is already heading in the right direction. This sustains him through all the bad things that happen before she does find him. We all have had times when something knocks us off the path we were pursuing… And finally, Frank. Frank was a conduit all along. I think it is not just a happenstance that the Directors had one actor portray Frank and Captain Randall. Frank could have indeed been Captain Randall in his past life. Remember how Frank nearly kills a man by kicking him to death? Something Captain Randall would do. Also, he worked for British Intelligence during the war. Those guys didn’t always do good things and we don’t really learn in the TV series (no, I haven’t read the books) what he did as a British Special Agent. But Frank’s soul knew when he saw that Highlander that there was something from the past: an attachment there much stronger than his to Claire. He had witnessed it many times. Recall Frank’s almost maniacal insistence on finding the Highlander and Randall’s obsessive pursuit of Jamie. So long story short (LOL!): as I have said before much MUCH is at play here and that is why the 7th season is not the last. Both the author and the Directors have thrown different cultures, beliefs and ideas into these books and into the TV series!

I think your theory had some merit but why does he not live his life as though she is coming back. He never says he’ll see her again in fact he thinks he won’t. I think Claire is at the battle to give him strength because he said whenever he needed her she was there. I still Clair is on her death bed telling her life story. Thus why the books are written in her voice and view and comes to take her to the spirit world. But she isn’t quite ready to die so he wait till the time is right. Probably wrong but Diana is the only one who know. The ghost must be very important to the ending otherwise she would have told us his importance

Yes, the author knows what she intends. The time/space continuum has many mysteries and consciousness is one of them. Consciously, we may not “live” with knowing, but our subconscious knows. Everyday life often smothers out what we really know and love especially when we are afraid and fighting for survival…which he was…but I am getting too existential. If they did they ought to know how to pronounce Culloden (as in The Battle of...) which is fundamentally integral to the entire saga - "if it hadn't been for The Battle of Culloden" is an oft repeated phrase. There are extensive references to Culloden correctly pronounced by the actors throughout. Please make an effort! Perhaps this a piece of computer software 'reading' a script - if so, it needs to be re-programmed. The mispronunciation of Culloden is painful to Scottish ears! It is not pronounced Cul - OH - den stressing the middle syllable. The correct pronunciation is Cul-aw-dn with equal stress on the syllables. 'S e ur beatha - You're welcome. Frank saw Jamie's ghost because it was Scottish Halloween! The inn keeper tells them the veils between the spirit world are at their thinnest. If someone else had been on the street they would probably have seen Jamie too. And as for claire, all she had to go on was what frank said. "I saw a highlander. Who vanished. Did I dream it? Did you have a Scottish lover in the war?" SHE had no reason to realize it was Jamie, much less think it was something she should pass on. What would he be able to answer about it? Why was your ghost there? "Don't know I'm not a ghost yet- not sure what my motives will be when I am." All claire knew was franks imagination ran away with him or it was a current day highlander being a peeping Tom who pulled a really hood disappearing act. Even if she figured out it was a ghost after she time travelled whose to say it wasn't Dougal wanting revenge for the Bonnie prince or Angus being Angus. It was awhile before she realized how interlinked Jamie and her lives were. And by then they had way bigger issues than did he or did he not eventually haunt her. Two words: black jack. Nough said.

Jamie does not have the time travel gene. It gets passed down through DNA. Which is why Brianna and Roger and their kids have it...they both have parents/ancestors who have the gene. Apparently (this is not in the books or movies, but in the other short stories she has written) they all came from one common ancestor...Master Raymond (who is a prehistoric time traveler). BTW, the Comte St Germain is also a time traveler.

Great question! Maybe it was necessity that drew them. I've always thought that it wasn't necessarily a Love that guided Claire through the stones, but a Purpose. Brianna went through with a Purpose to warn her parents of their imminent death; Roger went through with a Purpose of finding Brianna; ergo, the MacKenzie's were able to travel because their Purpose was to save Mandy's life.

I'm pretty sure It's my opinion that when that guy in the second season heals her he has her call to jamie and the stories say 202 years right.... which is how far she goes back and I think that's why when she goes to the stones he's where she winds up.....bc it was 2 years when she was pregnant and lost that baby.... so idk how to explain exactly but I think that Raymond guy did something to make him call to her in the future and that's why she goes to him? One second, one minute, one hour and one day at a time. Traveling time does not age or un age you in anyway in the series. Simply moves you from one point and drops you in the other. Claire has done it 3 times as of now and not aged and now we’ve seen Dougal’s son time travel forward as well despite being born in the past. The time travel is messy, but it seems if you are a child of a traveler you can pass through. I’m also guessing that pull to the past can also apply to the future and that’s how the story will end with Jamie and Claire going through the stones.

Time in future and past is parallel with each other. Time moves the exact speed. We see this when Claire goes back to Jamie after Frank dies. Her and Jamie have both aged 20 years or so, the exact amount of years they spent apart.

You are making it TOO complicated! It's easy to make things overcomplicsted in stories that swirl around a created complicated center with established rules. But Jamie's "highlander ghost" doesn't NEED to time travel AT ALL. Jamie lives in the mid 1700's (in the early seasons) and Claire in the post-WW2 1940s. One way or another, Jamie does die at some point. He's not immortal. (That's where the real complications come in.) But however you cut it, by the time Claire is even born, Jamie is long, long dead. Around 200 years dead. His ghost doesn't need to time travel, merely haunt the earth for his "200 years of pergatoty" until he catches up to her. 200 years go by; he watches the world change and waits in a loneliness not unlike his post- Culloden, pre-claire's return life. This will go on for 200 years of "haunting". A brutal sentence for one glimpse but Jamie is definitely the guy who would do it. At the end of those 200 years of waiting he can finally lay eyes on Claire before she time travels into the past for the 1st time. Either he can be at peace then, or more likely hang around until she comes back. (Even though so far he's not been caught. Unless he was somehow connected to the bird that sings to her.) Even after Claire returns to the past for the last time, Jamie would still have had reason to hang around as (spoiler alert:) Brianna, Roger and Jamie's grandkids are forced to go back and forth several times. Maybe his ghost finds peace when Claire dies and they can reunite? But either way Jamie and/or Jamie's ghost doesn't need to time travel at all to make the story fit. And Diana Gabaldon has said outright that Jamie will never time travel. So taking a time traveling ghost theory and mixing it with Jamie's near-death at Culloden and creating a temporary "almost ghost" who can also time travel because he's near death to explain the 1st episode; is definitely looking for zebras instead of for horses but does however strike at the real mystery still to be answered. The age of Jamie's ghost was set at about 25 by Diana Gabaldon. We can either write that off as maybe all dead (no matter their age at death) ending up as ghosts aged in the prime of their life: a "forever young" afterlife; or you can circle back to the long held theory (which I really, really hope is WRONG!) That Jamie actually died at Culloden! That everything that happened after that, his recovery, hiding as the dun bonnet, his bond with young Ian, becoming a printer, Claire coming back, saving Brianna from creepy geillis, meeting Brianna, their move to America, Frasier's ridge, his grandkids, his part in the American revolution, (spoiler alert:) meeting his son again, his death/resurrection ect are ALL more or less a dream! Something his mind conjures in the last moments of his life. Or some sort of dream-gift post-death for the life he never had (sucky gift considering how much of it was bad! If your going to give someone a glimpse of the life they never had you might have left out; I don't know: 20 years of agony apart? His daughter (that never really knows him) being raped? His wife being gang raped? Ect). I'm still hoping this theory proves to be another complicated theory created that does, I admit fit, but doesn't prove to be the case. Please Diane! Don't do it to us!

Definitely could have. If Gabaldon chooses to go that route it would definitely fit. Just nit sure what the point of that plot line would be, know what I mean? He doesn't need to die at all to explain the ghost; and it doesn't have the shock factor of most of the story never happening like the he died and stayed dead, and especially since she did kill him and gave Claire save him with the same healing time-traveler power that the time traveler in France used to save her when she was dying after Faith's stillbirth, it seems like a 2 time resurrection for Jamie in a plot that already has a lot of fantastical elements, to me anyway , would be overkill and make it less believable. But then again since the show is ending ots always possible they'll veer off into a different storyline than the books to wrap things up. We'll all have to wait and see and hope they end it well and give us answers to at least some of the questions and hope Diana brings it all together in the last book, that I can't wait to read!

This is what I think. In season 1 episode 1 Claire says to Frank she took care of a Scotts man during in the War (1940's). I think the Scotts man was Jamie incarnated (had Jamie's spirit/energy), then when the Scott died he became a ghost, the spirit being Jamie., and that is who Frank saw looking up in the window at Claire. Maybe Claire had a strong connection to Jamie's spirit or vice versa that allowed her to to travel back in time to the Scott's past life which was that of Jamie Fraser in the 1700's. Claire is a time traveler however maybe Jamie gets to be reincarnated.People often remember their past lives, however with traveling through the stones maybe time has no meaning and the past and future are closer than realized, and maybe that is also why Jamie is also a "seer" that is revealed in Season 7.

As of now, Jamie can not travel to the past/ future. There are signs of buzzing noises by the stones, and the stones feel warm to those who can travel. It seems to be something with genetics or dna so far with people who can travel. Claire not much is known about her parents except they died in a car accident while she was young. Bree- Claire and Jamie's daughter picked up the ability through her mom Roger- a decendant of Geillis Duncan who traveled back from the 60s Roger and Brees' kids were picked up by their parents Etc.. some connection with dna seems to be the case so far.
