As a parent I am obviously biased when it comes to the videos being produced by my sons Benito and Kalin (aka Panther) on their KZbin channel “The Nito Project.” I love what they’re doing, have little criticism of their work. I decided to comment on this particular video because I think it brings a simplicity to a somewhat complicated subject - lime plaster. In this video Benito shows a super simplified process of putting on a single coat of lime and following it with a lime putty (no aggregate) - two colors. So what you get is a look that mimics what most people search for with tadelakt in a lot less time, you don’t need special stones. Questions you might have - do you need olive oil soap? As for sealing the plaster many soaps will work, for years in Mexico we used common bars of a yellow soap in combination with alum to seal walls from water. After all the black soap or olive oil soap is simply nothing more than a household soap. Pure olive oil is often used in Italy, ghee in India, the use of natural oils to seal plaster is something with a great deal of history behind it. For the moment, I think that’s enough.

These videos are the very best. I forward them all over - even to people who don't care about mud. In this case I have a specific question as to what exactly you mean by alum, as it has many different meanings as various aluminum salts. I am thinking you mean potassium aluminium sulfate, but if you could make that clear, it would be very helpful! Any chance the Nito Project is not too far from Guadalajara or Mexico City? Thank you again!
@canelochronicles
@canelochronicles 5 жыл бұрын
@@SpaceCrete I have only known it as alum whether buying it from a hardware store in Mexico "alumbre" or from a pharmacy for brushing teeth or antiseptic. We are based in Arizona with no current work scheduled in Mexico. Benito has a workshop at Rancho Mastatal in Costa Rica later in the spring.

How is alum used in sealing plaster?? I'm also be interested in any pointers you may have for making black soap. When I look it up, it says that it's olive oil soap. When I look that up, it says it's castile soap. When I loo *that* up, it says to use KOH instead of NaOH, but that doesn't jive with my understanding of the lime-soap chemistry. Thanks! (I adore these videos, btw)

I've been fascinated with tadelakt and lime for the longest time ever. Now that we're building a resort, I'm eager to inculcate this or tadelakt in our project. How did yours turn out? Did you try exactly this technique? Biggest question though, CAN WE APPLY TADELAKT ON FLYASH BLOCK WALLS? I've had mixed answers to this from the limited tadelakt-experienced people I have talked to. Some say the flyash blocks are prone to cracks as well as tadelakt. So their combination may result in early cracks. Some say that the surface isn't suitable/coarse enough for the natural plaster to adhere to. I'm sorry for the questions. Any insight will help

WOW, this is the best how-to vid I've ever seen! What a movie-masterpiece honestly! I love how mesmerized I am watching you work to the music. I love the sound change from base coat to lime, in the bowl with water.... really thought out and artful. Thank you for your artistically-illuminated-skills shared here!!!

OMG....How do you make it look so easy? I've lime plastered an entire mud hut, and it was hard work...dirty, messy guess work most of the time...with experimental recipes cobbled together from around the globe...still standing 2 years later though! Benito...you make it look like a finely crafted modern dance piece..Kudos! Thanks for sharing your recipes.

pity for me, I'm watching it 4 years too late. I am a very passionate lover and admirer of these indigenous methods of building a house. From the very bottom of my heart, I wish you get whatever you want in life and move ahead with all your aspirations to keep this creative fire burning. Love from Odisha, India bhai❤

True artistry. A trade that is on the extinction list that for thousands of years was how most buildings and homes were enclosed. Thanks from an old school electrician who works his trade with an artists touch. The trades are an art if you do it the proper way .
