I always forget that this movie is like three layers deep. We're watching a girl reading a book about a guy recounting the times of another guy.
@o-henryАй бұрын
Which also is a fantastic detail. It's a nod to certain books that you don't just casually enjoy but ones that teach you important things about life. Books that convey wisdom and experience. And you always carry those in your heart. And it's so relatable too, I still annually visit Remarques grave in Ascona.

It's the least reliable narrator I know of. There's also the vast time difference between whenever the girl is reading it at the authors grave, the author recounting his meeting the old Hotel owner when he was 20 years younger & the owner recounting his youth, so watch we arr watching is the girl's imagination of events from 60 or 70 years earlier.

I feel like this is one of those movies that got carried immensely by the main performance. Everyone and everything else was fantastic too, no question, but IMO Anderson's other movies never reached this level. Fiennes just added a touch that can't be replicated.

This is one of the great movies of its time. Wes Anderson movies all have a certain panache that doesn't exist anywhere else...but this one transcends all of them, perfectly scored, with an ensemble cast that continually astonishes you. For me, the elderly Zero is my most beloved character...a man who has experienced loss and yet retained a sense of grace and contentment, wise without any arrogance. So perfect. A story, within a story, within a story, read by a modern girl...also an inception-esque rabbithole that the watcher finds themselves gently sliding down. Side note: The Society of Crossed Keys does actually exist...although under a slightly different name. Originally a loose association of French concierges and hoteliers...it eventually became an international organization that, while not exactly secret, is quite exclusive and not well known. It is reserved for proven excellence in the field of hospitality, its members have access to remarkable and often scarce luxuries...not for themselves, but so that they can provide the highest level of service even under surprising or difficult circumstances. To be inducted into their ranks is still an honor. If you ever happen to be in a very fine hotel...keep an eye on the lapels of the concierge...if you see a pair of crossed keys...you will know that the person serving you intends to do their best. My youngest brother spent years in various hospitality fields, in America and in Europe...and for a time he was a head chef for a Zagat's guide rated restaurant...and during that time he came to know a few unusual people, including a couple of members of that esteemed agency.

I highly recommend the YT video titled "The Strange Reality of The Grand Budapest Hotel." Having Zero's beloved’s name be Agatha allows him to inscribe the dedication “from Z to A” in the book of poetry that he gives to her. Later, bilateral, palindromic symmetry is established by a mirror-image bookend when Henkels orders a search to be carried out “from Augenzburg to Zilchbruck.” The name of Jeff Goldblum’s Vilmos Kovacs seems to derive from those of cinematographers Vilmos Zsigmond and László Kovács just as the name Madame D. could be taken as a Max Ophuls reference. Also note the 2 former Khaki Scouts from "Moonrise Kingdom."

Man, when I watched this movie for the first time, I was BAFFLED by how an American director was capable of understanding and conveying so much Eastern European, Austro-Hungarian and Jewish culture. Aside from all the fantastic visuals and acting, there's so much in the subtleties.
@DomR1997Ай бұрын
America has a lot of ties to both eastern europe and european Jews. If an American isn't familiar with either, they can go outside, throw a stone, and find someone who's probably a direct immigrant from one of those locations. Even without those close ties, though, Anderson always puts so much research into his films. If anyone was going to be able to pull it off, it was going to be him. Even the music was made to feel traditional and authentic.
@o-henryАй бұрын
@@DomR1997 Definitely. It's just that anyone can do research with enough resources. Anderson on the other hand **felt** lots of things that most people wouldn't get. It takes a certain wisdom to feel these things ..
@SorchaSublimeАй бұрын
I imagine it's mostly a result of his being well read. He is able to communicate things through atmosphere which he could not know of first hand, and I believe that the only way to get that intimate of an account is to read it, and to read much more on top of that. I think this is intonated by the framing device of the movie, ie a girl reading a book. It goes beyond what you would get from purely academic research
