pretty crazy for a show in the 90s dealt with a subject like PTSD. That's one of the reasons I really like this show. They touch on even touchy subjects and trauma has a tangible effect on characters and causes long term changes to them that effect how they move forward, unlike many shows where by the next episode there are zero traces of damage or trauma left over.

That was a great season opener. The Master had a bigger effect on Buffy than she realised, and she acted out against her friends. I loved how Cordelia can still dish out truth, even through the sarcasm. Great to see Jenny Calendar again :)

Cordy roolz! This episode illustrates why in a serious drama you need a 'bitca' character; they can say the things that the other characters are too close friends or too polite to say.

It was a really nasty, humiliating thing to do to Xander, considering Buffy knew how he felt about her. And in public! One of the absolute best things about Buffy is change..I might have said it before, but, you can just feel the change in almost every single episode, the growth, how they deal w it together and how the shared trauma changes all of them, it’s really quite unique among tv shows.

The campiness does get less & less as they get older. Kinda like how life happens....school/college is fun & everything. But then you gotta enter the real world with bills, taxes, work, chores. Now, obviously a world with vampires, witches & demons isn't nearly as mundane as life. But the campiness will eventually go away.
@ToySouljah.
@ToySouljah. 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you except I wouldn’t say the camp goes away completely. The campiness is still there way into the later seasons (one word “kittens”) but it definitely less campy than the earlier seasons for sure.
@jimmygreer2140

@@ToySouljah. Oh, the comedy of Buffy is ALWAYS present. I was more talking about the overall light-hearted nature of the show. That the writers haven't added too much real life drama just yet. We got a little taste here with Buffy dealing with her PTSD but overall the show still feels pretty "safe space" for the Scooby Gang. But boy is that going to change & the show is going to cover some pretty serious & adult subjects.

Burning bones is a lot more difficult than you seem to suppose. A cremation furnace burns at nearly 1000°C (or nearly 2000°F) sometimes for as long as 3 and a half hours, and they still don't typically succeed at fully burning away the largest bones.

FYI: the film is not a direct prequel. Some of the events of the film ALSO happened in the show’s reality, but in the film she was a senior and the vampire lore is slightly different. In this show, she starts as a sophomore, so for that alone, it can’t be considered a prequel to this. It’s more like a slightly different version of those events also occurred in the show’s universe.
@ffaristocrat
@ffaristocrat 2 жыл бұрын
Lots of shows in the 80s & 90s that were spun off of movies had a similar take - the events of the movie generally happened but the details are different. Alien Nation, Highlander, MASH, etc. I like to think the Buffy movie is what an in-universe movie based on the true events of her freshman year would've been like with all the changes adaptations entail. And I guess there's that comic mini-series that shows the "canonical" version of events for the TV series continuity.
@Henrik_Holst
@Henrik_Holst 2 жыл бұрын
And lets not forget that it's the original script to the movie that is the "not a direct prequel", the actual movie itself have zero to do with the show. Joss walked off the production of the movie in anger when they manhandled his script.

Great reaction to S2 Ep1. Fun facts to know about this episode - The line up of Cibo Matto playing the Bronze includes Sean Lennon, the son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Cordelia's comment to Buffy about the 'Joan Collin's 'tude' refers to the British actress Joan Collins, who's probably best known in the US for her role as prime bitch Alexis Carrington in Dynasty in the 1980s. The 'bitca' line is still one of my favourites out of all seven seasons and Nick really makes it work - it's all in the timing. Loving how much you guys are loving the show and looking forward to the rest of S2 - hold on to you hats!

A great opener from S2 Buffy obviously suffering from PTSD, and taking it all out on her friends. Interesting when Cordelia even tries to intervene referencing Buffy to Joan Collins as a type of 'Uber Bitch' because she knows that behaviour herself. All's well at the end and a bit of comic relief with The Anointed One ' I hate that girl' Another well written episode exploring psychological illness and how it can affect others. On re-watch you can notice so much more in each episode that was missed first time round. Good reaction again.

LOVE that you guys are in Season 2! After this show was more or less rescued by fans, they were granted a full second season AND a bigger budget. But I liked that Joss Whedon kept the practicle campiness as part of the series. It keeps continuity, and honestly. it's kinda charming lol. I also love - and you'll notice this never changes - how you can make out the stunt doubles in the fights. This was also on purpose. If you've ever watched an action TV series from the 60s or 70s, this was a common thing to see the actors weren't ding their own fight scenes lol. Have fun with this season!!!

The "will they won't they" stuff in Buffy is done pretty well. Nothing really out stays it's welcome and proper resolutions are given to situations. The romantic relationships are important but not the main thing that kept viewers coming back for more. It was more about the character dynamics in general which are really interesting and well drawn in Buffy so I don't think it's something you will get tired of. Loving these Buffy reactions guys!

So back in the day when TV had seasons (before Netflix blew up the paradigm) shows would air while they were still shooting. 30 minute comedies would be on the tightest schedule, sometimes airing only three or four episodes ahead of what they had shot (hence why clip shows exist) but a 60 minute drama like Buffy would still have aired before all 22 eps were in the can. This is why there aren't more new shots in the opening package, well that and possible spoilers.

Mark 26:18. Oh yeah! Plus, the 1980s Yuppy & Preppy Fashions! The director of, "Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan", was given a lot of...."grief", is it? Because he had late actor, Merritt Butrick, wear his jacket like, Buffy, is wearing that faux sweater, and of course, seeing him look like that, made him look like his character in the "CBS" sitcom, "Square Pegs". In the commentary for the movie, he wondered why that was so wrong. What are you supposed to do with your sweater or jacket, when you don't want to wear it, but not toss it? The response is to not put someone in that situation to begin with, if you don't want people thinking, "Nineteen-Eighties!", or, "The Eighties!"

I have a ball watching you guys watch my favorite show. Season 2 is amazing. In my opinion there are couple of clunkers (episode 2 and 20 for example) but overall it's fantastic.

Mark 9:38. Okay, I've seen the series, both free on TV and on my DVD sets, so not hearing them or being able to read the CC that you have, doesn't mean that I'm missing out totally. The CC option is only for your dialogue and it covers most of the screen of this model smartphone. The box fan is loud, even on Setting 1. I need to pause until I am someplace where the acoustics are better for me. So don't go away! I'll find something else to do until then. Thanks thus far though. 👍🤓

@@bernardsoul5186 i agree with you and have been loyally patiently watching and waiting for multiple shows for years upon years by now, ive been watching normies since almost the beginning of them. but were talking about a 12 season show plus its 5 season spinoff Angel (which is what we're really waiting for lol) thats going to be literally years upon years just to get the musical let alone other good eps/seasons let alone Angel i dont got 5 plus years like that anymore to be waiting/enjoying the journey to the end like i have with their other shows throughout the years, i have alot medically wrong with me and will most likely not be here by that point gimme at least 2 eps a week like naruto to look forward to lol :) if it wasnt for me potentially dying then i completely agree with you of enjoying the journey to the end because its an amazing beautifully written show as is angel damn near every episode of both are amazing for one reason or another no slow/bad episodes

@@majinvegeta420 I just calculated it, there are 144 episodes of Buffy, so they should be done with Buffy and in the last season of Angel in 2 years and 8 months after starting it. It’s been a few months since they started the series and “Once More with Feeling” is the 107th episode, so that should be out by February of 2024. Think you can hang on till then?

Mark 33:30. "Just dancing", he says! Both, "Footloose", movies are based on a book about a town in, Oklahoma, that banned, "School Dances", as an authorized social activity, because to, Baptists, at the time, it was too much like Sex! There's a joke about it! "Why don't Baptists make love standing up? Because it looks like dancing!" 😂🤣

"They should have a conversation!" M, you ain't kiddin'! SO MUCH DRAMA in this show could be avoided if people just talked to each other! But of course that's the whole point, more drama sells the show...

8:43 Don't be ashamed Rana, that was great! 27:56 He's undead, he's never going to grow up. He's stuck at the age where he died. Cordelia is a bitca, but she knows it and she owns it. Notice she doesn't argue when Buffy calls her bitca of the year reigning champion, she just says 'I can hold my own.' The movie starred Kristy Swanson as Buffy, but has some differences from the series. Buffy is older, she's already a senior, for one. There is a comic book 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Origin' which basically re-tells the same basic plot as the movie, but so it matches with the series. 'Will they/won't they' is often referred to as 'Unresolved Sexual Tension' or UST and is very common. Often it resolves, either because they have sex, or because one of them dies, or marries someone else.

Mark 26:10. Hmm. The 1990s, didn't just have original fashions, it also had a lot of "retro looks". What she's wearing, some may think is about JFK's widow, because they don't know of anyone else. But Buffy's a blonde, so her retro look is inspired by a blonde celebrity from back in the day, but not a buxom one like, Marilyn Monroe, Jane Mansfield, Barbara Eden, et cetera. 🤔
