The second episode (along with other “monster of the week” episodes this season) were all originally supposed to be in season 1. But were repurposed slightly in some cases, and just left as-is for others.

@@arc7375 The only episode confirmed to absolutely be that way is 2x18 _Killed by Death._ The other episodes were vague ideas written down, but never made it to any planning stage and entirely original except for ideas like lets do a Frankenstien or Frankenstien's bride episode. Especially considering the S1 writers weren't around after S1. The creators were the only ones writing-wise who stayed from S1 into S2.

When She Was Bad was a great opener from S2 Buffy obviously suffering from PTSD, and taking it all out on her friends, and sexually teasing Xander on the dance floor. Interesting when Cordelia even tries to intervene referencing Buffy to Joan Collins as a type of 'Uber Bitch' because she knows that behaviour herself. All's well at the end and a bit of comic relief with The Anointed One ' I hate that girl' Another well written episode exploring psychological illness and how it can affect others.

I like "When She Was Bad" a lot. It's pretty much a hinge episode between the first season and the second season (which I would argue doesn't really start until the 3rd episode). It actually addresses what happened in S1 and builds solidly from that point. It's one of the few times that you actually see a tv hero suffering from PTSD. The Frankenstein episode on the other hand...exists. (not really fair because the acting is pretty good but it's pretty obviously from one of the rejected S1 scripts). "Maybe he'll (Snyder)will grow on us..." Yeah, like fungus.

The opener was the episode that made me sit up and realize that this really was something special. A tour de force by SMG in every scene. That little cry that Buffy makes when she first swings the hammer into the bones still tears my heart...25 years later. And Willow's smile at Buffy at the end is so pure I just melt.

Another very interesting thing about the BTVS series is the writers constantly pay homage to old films throughout. Here of course we have The Frankenstein type theme, but also if you notice near the start where 'My Girl' is being sung whilst assembling the parts, a direct reference to 1987 film Mannequin starring Andrew McCarthy and Kim Catrall, where Jonathan is singing that same song whilst trying to create the perfect girl Mannequin. Also calling the dead character here DARYL could be a reference to 1985 sci-fi D.A.R.Y.L. , could be coincidence that last one but who knows. Quiet sad when we see Daryl's mother looking at his old American Football games, and Daryl himself thinking of his human life as well.

For Buffy's loss, if you remember she had been a slayer before coming to Sunnydale. There is a movie that isn't really canon, but has a very similar story to what Joss settled on as her origin. They just botched it so bad it is why we got the series. As it's own thing it is hilarious and fun to watch. The series is so much better though. Whether there is any other history you have to wait and see. I loved the opener. It was so real. The 1st finale and the opening of 2 really cemented this show as a defining show for our generation. It showed just how real it could be. Xander gets a lot of flack for "attacking" Buffy, but I appreciated that he was often willing to call her out when needed. Sometimes in a terrible way, but he is a kid. A kid often in the midst of his own trauma. He has his issues, but I didn't think that was one. Plus his concern for Willow in that scene was great. He too often overlooks her for Buffy, but that reminded you at the end of the day she is his best friend.

In Ep1, when Cordy confronts Buffy about being a bitch, you can tell Charisma was sick and her voice was shot. One of the theories is that Buffy was also extra dark as she still had a bit of a connection to the Master and needed to destroy the skeleton. Most vampires don't leave one. Writer Ty King is OK with people being disappointed in this episode (Ep 2). He makes up for it later. Poor Cordelia trying to be sincere at the end.

I think a stake needs to go through the vampire's heart, not just scratch the skin. So, splinter probably won't work.

It is going to be such a great ride watching your reactions. The Buffyverse is a journey and you are going to be entertained and we are going to have a great time feeling your emotions One of the last semi history lessons. You are correct in noticing the sets and locations are upgraded. Buffy has become the hit the WB needed but was not prepared. The network had not expected the ratings nor the buzz being created by this throw in towards the end of the season replacement Some of the network executives thought it was a fluke and held back the money Joss Whedon was requesting. After the second episode ratings it was clearly not a fluke but a hit that was here to stay . The WB was only showing new programs 3 or 4 nights a week do or 2 hours at this time. Buffy was on Monday night but in a shocking move , the network would move Buffy to Tuesday night in January. There was no shows on Tuesday so BTVS would turn on the network . The follow up to Buffy would be a new show that would become the new teen it drama, Dawson Creek. Buffy was the network and it seemed there were promos for all new shows every 10 minutes. I think Gilmore Girls was promoted on Buffy more injury lawyers on daytime television. The backdrop of success does translate to higher budgets to the episodes but more importantly it gave Joss Whedon the cache to produce the show he intended. What you will see is a producer that has the power to win most fights. ( he will have to compromise on a very few stories but he gets to kick down many barriers) Weak willed network louts objected to so many things that they are not worth detailing. You are already picking up the pace of the show and the themes presented. In the first episode, has a tv hero been shown with mental and emotional issues caused by their actions and victory… in a 1997 show that by the way is targeted to 14-29 women ? It was not at all the first episode expected when it aired. But it felt real and part of how Buffy was becoming more than an action figure. And we all took notice in the change with Cordelia and it was overall a big positive Some assembly required was not ground breaking but was comfort good . Episode 1 was a jolt ( Buffy was a bitch and Trauma with a lead in a show was unheard of) liked but a little uncomfortable. But in #2 this was like Season 1. Familiar subject , realistic reason for the premise to be turned upside down, and Buffy to kick ass . Thank you for sharing your experience. You are great fun to watch. Doing 2 episodes is fantastic for us but do not worry I’d some episodes will take or need 40 minutes of watching and discussing Many you can do 2 at a time but gives yourself wiggle room. When you watch those really special episodes you will have a discussion that will open each others minds. It will be a blast

In the Bronze when Buffy is grinding on Xander, the real band Cibo Matto is playing (OK, miming to) their song "Sugar Water". There is a pretty cool music video for it on KZbin, worth checking out. Also, it might not mean all that much to you youngsters, but at the time this episode was shot their bass player was Sean Lennon, son of famous John Lennon of the famous Beatles.

"If you'd worked with us for five seconds you could have prevented this." How, Xander? She could have just not gone to the Bronze, leaving Cordelia to her fate. Perhaps you would be okay with that, but Buffy couldn't (or anybody with a bit of human decency). Or maybe she should have taken you with her? That would have prevented the vampires from taking Giles and Willow how? Or maybe she would have taken you and Willow with her. That would have only left Giles vulnerable but you wouldn't know the correct translation leaving the vampires to pick up Willow at their leisure. Are you going to guard her 24/7 when you don't know she's a particular target? Yeah, Buffy was screwing up, but what happened here was _not_ her fault. "If Angel gets a splinter does he die?" Only if the splinter goes through his heart. It's not just wood. It's wood through the heart.

@@coldservings . . . . . the only thing special about kakistos is that he's older than that vampire was. it seems a vampire's heart is harder to destroy the older that vampire is. but there's no evidence that even a newly made vampire would die to anything smaller than a pencil.

It would be pretty hard to get anything smaller than a pencil into the heart, so it's largely just a theoretical discussion. Indeed, even a pencil would be pushing it. The show does strongly downplay just how hard it is to shove a piece of wood into someone's heart. Slayer strength can be used for an explanation for Buffy, but for the human characters? So whatever you like as headcanon is fine. It could go either way.

I miss the days when each episode was mostly its own stories, and u dont need to watch whole seasons for a story the lady who does the fighting choreography/stunt double Sophia Crawford does a great job from the first 4 seasons, mainly for me season 2-4. u can tell when they replace her later on from the lack of tecnique buffy uses. but that could also be storyline excuse but Sophia was great Charisma Carpenter does such a good job in the universe playing cordelia. sarah m geller was up for the part but joss wanted her for buffy. as good a job she would of done, i think charisma does it perfect.

Hey! Thanks for your question. We do want to make it clear that we do not hate Xander or any character really in the show. If we did say that then it’s mostly us being extra and silly. We just don’t like it when he’s a jerk. We also are aware that Xander is the big three main characters but doesn’t mean he is exempt from being analyzed. He does tend to treat women not so greatly and some of his actions he takes against Buffy down the line are not things we particularly like. So just a heads up for future episodes. However, we are also allowed to feel what we feel about characters especially reacting for the first time in that moment to them. I think that’s great about this show that there can be a lot of different feelings especially since all the characters have flaws, We are also growing with the characters and respect Xander as being an integral part of the show. We also find Xander funny sometimes Lol However, I do see that whether people like or do not like Xander is a big debate in this fandom…So I guess its a popular topic lol Hope that answers your question and thanks for watching!
