So the reason "The Bear" is winning awards as a comedy is that it's 30-ish minutes long. For a very very long time, back when we only had three networks, dramas were an hour long and comedies were 30 minutes long. It takes a long time for an industry as big as the entertainment industry to change course, and the explosion of cable and streaming in the past 20-ish years has radically changed what genre of show can fit in what timespan. This is just a case of the awards shows being behind the times. The Bear is by no definition a comedy -- it's a drama with comedic elements.

Why are dramas allowed to have comedy and still be dramas, but comedies can't have drama without being accused of being in the wrong category?

I think it's also because the show is submitted for awards as a Comedy, which they can only do because of the shorter runtime, because there are no established rules about when a show can be considered a comedy or a drama beyond that. And because awards are always biased towards favoring drama over comedy, and comedy that feels like drama, The Bear ends up getting all the awards. It's a scummy thing to do, since they're taking advantage of how the industry works so they can say that the show is widely acclaimed and has won ton of awards while screwing over other shows that are unquestionably funnier and undoubtedly comedies.

The Book Richie talks about is called Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage, by Haruki Murakami. It's a great book and has a lot in common with Richie's journey this season, mostly in the way both see themselves and the fact tha the image we create about ourselve may not be what others percieve about us

The hole in the wall scene hits me because maybe Richie wasn't focus on updating the menu or looking at Danish designs because he was too busy trying to keep Mikey from burning the place down! Richie covered the hole with a positive image to hopefully make Mikey take pause. It's not that "old" people are stuck in their ways, it's that they aren't afforded the time to think and pivot w/o it impacting everyone else...

And why are they acting like they've never seen a comedy with dramatic elements in it? They had a weird reaction to the idea of Carmy and Sidney possibly having sex. Curious, they definitely shouldn't have issues with interracial pairings.
