CLAMP is not an animation group though. They are a manga artist group. They made a shit ton of very popular manga in all kind of genre since the 80s. They just made the character design for Code Geass. It is animated by Studio Sunrise (the Gundam studio).

The name, his fake name, where he studies, his connection to Prince Clovis, his attitude towards "eleven" all made it 100% clear, no hints at all at him being even half Japanese unless you didnt pay attention.

Lelouch made a strategic decision that it was tactically necessary to use his power on Jeremiah. There was no way Jeremiah would’ve made that deal, and Lelouch needed to rescue Suzaku to gain the support of the resistance. He still tried to disarm Jeremiah in the long term by implying that Jeremiah was a traitor, and then cementing the ruse with Geass. It was a good plan and it did work, completely removing Jeremiah from political and military power.

This episode really shows how this anime highlights so many topical themes, and covers them so well Just in this episode we had the show touch on imperialism, colonialism, the deconstruction of working within a system and outside a system to change it, and how justice systems hold people of varying levels of power to different standards

Just some information, although I'm sure you know by now. Lelouche and his sister are Britainian prince and princess but 2 of the youngest in a long line and the only 2 from their mother. But after their mother was killed they fled to Japan to lay low and grew up there for a few years before it was colonized by Britannia. But during the invasion they were believed to have been killed.

In my opinion LeLouch is morally justified in his actions. He is fighting a revolutionary war against a regiem that is clearly f*scistic. That makes the revolution justified. In war different rules apply then in peace. Killing enemy combatants is not a crime (if done so in battle and without the use of biological, chemical or nuclear weapons) and I agree with that. Now killing innocents is of course different. It can't be avoided with 100% certainty, so I think as long as every possible precaution was taken to avoid this and it is never taken as an acceptable risk/downside to a strategy, it sadly has to be accepted. Anything beyond that has to be seen as highly diminishing the moral superiority of LeLouch against Britannia. At least that is now I will be judging LeLouch on this rewatch.

Britannia is a monarchy not fascist, the leader is determined by a family line of succession and the latter is determined by a "voted in" party member. Also I wouldn't say morally justified, LeLouch has a personal beef with his family. In other words he is just manipulating the Japanese rebels because it's convenient for him. LeLouch only cares about his revenge and the well being of his little sister.

@@joecrazy9896 My viewing of the series has been a while, so it might be due to misremembering, but I would say that LeLouches motives, while definitely including revenge and his sisters well being, are up to debate in their entirety. I can agree that neither his lust for revenge, nor his feelings for one individual, altruistic as they may be, can justify a rebellious war, so if I go with your interpretation, I would agree with your judgement. Britannia is certainly monarchical. But I would argue that it has certain fascistic features like regarding disagreement with official doctrine as treason, considering one kind of people as inferior, contempt for the weak, heroism and obsession with weapons and shows of strength. I am working with Umberto Eccos definition of fascism here. There are certainly also common fascistic features not present, but whatever one decides to call a state of these features, I would argue that it is sufficiently horrid for my argument. And could you explain the "voted in" part? I did not get it and I would like to (I got the determination by family line, but who votes for what?).

While the dictator themselves are the most important, if they were to be removed from the picture it would be up to top party members themselves to choose who the next leader is. Not really voting, but it's a small group of the "elites" within a fascist political party that will determine the next dictator. The main reason I'm making the distiction is because to be honest, the specific definition you are using can be a bit too broad in my opinion. A nation can be nationalistic or have a strong military and not be labeled "fascist". As for LeLouch, not saying that his motivations don't change, but outside of a select few people the rest are nothing more than chess pieces. If the rebels were to be defeated, LeLouch would be more frustrated over the waste of effort rather than the cause itself. It's just fortunate that their rebellion makes for a good stepping stone for the MC.

"nationalistic" is a term that is defined and understood very differently by different people, so I will refrain from going into detail on that, but yes, for example having a strong military does not mean being fascist. Facism would be defined (by Umberto Eco and I think it's a good definition) by a political movement/institution being well described by most/all of the criteria. Of course that leaves uncertainty at some number and Britannia may fall there. While I am by no means well educated on the topic I would say that this definition is narrow enough if applied correctly.

Which leads me to my next point, just because they drive Britannia out, doesn't mean Japan will just go back to normal. The thing about insurgencies is that there is a lot of them and will have entirely different opinions on how to run things. Unfortunately, it is highly possible that Japan will have in-fighting and will probably lead to a split between the different factions. LeLouch may not intend that, but there will be a whole lot of instability in the long run.

SPOILERS Thank god Suzaku's character changed a lot towards the end of the second season. I really couldn't stand him in the beginning of the show, bending over backwards to a corrupt, mass murdering, empire thinking that submission will make them turn into a benevolent force. It's like saying that I should be nice to a person who raped me because then they'll change and never do it to other people again. Fuckin' stupid.
