FYI there where many assassination attempts on Hi*ler and the Na*i regime, the whole situation was not as simple as oppression. The problem was his ideology and also frightening tactics manipulated so many people to be actually on his side or wouldn't dare to do something. Many had to went along to be able to survive through hyperinflation and massive unemployment after WWI, to some extend caused by war reparations that where unreasonable. Not the richest person had enough money to buy just one egg... In the movies "The Wave"(I think 2008 from Germany is the best) based on a real school experiment from the US(Ron Jones in 1967 California) it is demonstrated that it would work to this day. It's just how society and peoples minds work and how it can be abused.

@@mathematicalmonk1427 You may be right about it looking cringey in real life. But in the show, Lelouch does act to draw attention. Another thing ep 1 Lelouch was literally gun point 10+ soldiers in front of him fully ready to make fake excuse just to kill him for the sport after he saw hid childhood best friend and a random girl being shot and in his mind killed to protect him. All that after he got tossed around the road while Knightmare is after the thing he is in ... Obviously he wouldn`t think much of what he says or does after randomly getting power - he wanted them dead so he can escape he told them to die and they did

There are lots of valid interpretations of why Lelouch chose “Zero” as his code name. Zero can mean he is no one, or that he represents everyone. However, my personal take is that Zero is a metaphor for returning the world to a time before Area 11 and all the previous Areas. Just my personal take on things!
@DominoPivot
@DominoPivot Ай бұрын
An interesting idea, though calling himself 10 would make the metaphor more obvious to us. Maybe less so to the Britannians, since it might make them think of Area 10. Still, that made me think. If Britannia reduces the nations it annexes to mere numbers, calling himself Zero turns their whole shtick into a farce: "Is eleven meant to be an insult? Try harder."
@saltyk9869
@saltyk9869 Жыл бұрын
Lelouch very intentionally makes grand gestures when using his Geass. He wants to draw people's attention to his eye in order to guarantee they make eye contact. This is perhaps another benefit to the slot in his Zero mask. It opening would naturally draw people to look at it. As Zero he is very theatrical. In his first scene as Zero he waits until the moment they enter to tunnel to turn. Even though it would be natural to turn when they addressed him. And when they approach to free Suzaku, everything is done as dramatically as possible. He's trying to put on a show. He wants people to be talking about what happened. Maybe Lelouch missed his calling in acting? Of course, it all probably stems from growing up as a royal. Putting on a show for the people. That of a charismatic Prince. Something that Clovis alluded to.

This episode highlights a really great thing I like about the premise - Geass is a completely outside context power. The opponents and allies Lelouch faces are just clueless about what is going on. In Death Note the police etc quickly figured out that the cause is supernatural, and quickly started decoding the power's limits in an attempt to figure out the source. Here? People just think people act out of character or do some other justifications, because they it's just too illogical to think that some superpower can possibly be involved.

Even though Lelouch/Zero & Suzaku disagree with each other’s actions, both their actions in this episode are beneficial. Lelouch proves Suzaku is innocent, exposes the corruption of the pure bloods (albeit with a fake code name) & creates a symbol of hope for the resistance, while Suzaku going back to his court martial helps protect the Japanese civilians.

It'll be a good, long discussion to have at the end of this to weigh Light against Lelouch. Both start from the premise "smart, young man uses a god-gifted power to better the world", but as you're starting to notice their reasoning and their limitations are very different. It is interesting how these stories end when you consider that Light started off (telling himself) he was doing it for justice, whereas Lelouch was only ever ultimately out for revenge. Lelouch is lying to everyone else whereas Light was always lying to himself.

Zero, the man, the myth, the legend finally makes his debut!
@AlicentviBritannia
@AlicentviBritannia Жыл бұрын
This episode is phenomenal and easily one of the best Code Geass writing. For starters, we have Zero's debut. This theatrical Messiah who sells himself as a champion of justice, the protector of the weaks and, ultimately, the hope of the unfortunate (Code Geass is intentionally imbued with messianism). I wonder if Kenny has noticed that his design is based on the figure of the chess king. It is clearly seen in the opening. Zero is the most prominent example of the mask (an idea that is very important in Code Geass) and, contrary to what many say, Zero is Lelouch playing himself (that is, enhancing his qualities, including his darker side) and, at the same time and strangely enough, Zero is his own character and not just Lelouch's alter ego. Even if Lelouch/Zero told the resistance members that Britannia is their enemy and not the people to convince them to join him, he is right and I like that he inspires Ohgi, Kallen and the others (just like Lelouch in the first episode, they saw themselves powerless against Britannia and considered the chances of defeating it non-existent). I must say that I find Kallen's response to Lelouch/Zero about the contrast between the settlement and the ghetto chilling. By the way, here we already see the mistrust between Lelouch/Zero and the members of the Ohgi resistance. That distrust of Lelouch comes from his need to control, which, in turn, derives from his upbringing in Britannia and from Lelouch's trauma, which we already had a glimpse of in the third episode and which we will deepen more in episode 7. Basically, Lelouch has to control the situation and the people so that everything goes according to his plans or else he thinks everything will go wrong. It's not an assumption. Literally in a NewType interview, Lelouch's character commented that he believes that his worst failure was not having protected his mother and sister. Looking at it from the outside, Lelouch blames himself for something that was out of his control. He feels more secure controlling people than trusting them. At the end of this episode we have the beginning of the rivalry between Lelouch and Suzaku. Their rivalry is the soul of the show. Not for nothing Lelouch and Suzaku are the best characters in Code Geass. Their story arcs are intertwined. One is the other's mirror inverse. Lelouch is the Britannian who was stripped of his identity and unfairly humiliated just like the Japanese and, driven by pride, they end up fighting together against Britannia while Suzaku is the Japanese who begins to make his way through a society where the most prevails strong and that is what this boy has left over (he is a star pilot), how much will he rise? Will have to see. In my opinion, this is one of the best worked rivalries in anime and criminally undervalued by the community. I still have more to say about their relationship, but I'll hold back for now. Let's see what Kenny and Montana think. I also liked the political move by the purist faction of the army, brief as it was (this is another episode where Britannia's racism and cruelty is highlighted). And, of course, the entire execution scene is one of the best moments in the series with one of Lelouch's most brilliant plans. Impossible not to be on the edge of the seat while we witness everything.

The ironic thing is that Suzaku would have been completely unable to follow his ideals and change Britannia from the inside if Zero never showed up. The system was too much against him and he never would have been put in the driver's seat of the Lancelot frame without Zero's influence on the battlefield. Zero would have been perfectly capable of taking down Britannia without Suzaku but Suzaku would never have had the opportunity to change things without Zero.

"Code Geass is intentionally imbued with messianism" No kidding. Homeboy looked at that part of the Bible about Jesus dying for everyone's sins, and thought the same thing he thought at every step of his rebellion. "Go big or go home. Can't go home. Let's go big" 😂 Other than that, yeah. As much as I hate Suzaku for all his hypocritical and self-righteous bullshit, gotta recognise that this kind of intense emotional response is only possible because the writing is so dang good, both for his character and his nemesis relationship with Zero. And the end of his arc in both seasons makes complete sense too, so there's another win 👍

One thing I've always wondered though and would love to discuss is, Would "Lelouch" have been able to convince Suzaku to join him? If Zero showed his true identity right then and there, would Suzaku have been more inclined to listen?

That's a good question but honestly? No he wouldn't. Suzaku is too much of an idealist to go along with what Lelouch was trying to do. He'd more than likely criticize him for killing clovis even though clovis has been shown to be more than ruthless against the Japanese. He was the one who ordered everybody to be killed in the shinjuku ghetto after CC disappeared. So for killing one man Lelouch probably saved thousands but suzaku wouldn't see it that way. Okay. Already after having seen the reaction, some responses to your comments: 1:57 Since you uploaded the reaction to episode 7 to your Patreon, you should know that Nunnally's blindness is a psychological condition from trauma. Yes, more fuel for the fire of anger that burns inside Lelouch. 2:16 Do you want a difference between Lelouch and Light? I'll give you one. Light always thought he was doing good. He never judged his actions wrong. Remember he got mad when Lind L. Taylor accused him of being evil. Lelouch, on the other hand, is aware that he is doing evil, but he believes that the long-term effect will be beneficial. That is why he is so focused on the results. Lelouch will explain it better than me in the future. Wait for him. 2:30 Montana said it right. It is a matter of revenge. Your definition of justice fits what Ohgi, Kallen and the rest of the rebels want to do (Tamaki does it for glory). But Lelouch undertakes this rebellion for personal reasons. The prologue to this episode tells you: avenge the murder of his mother and create a world where his sister is not treated unfairly for being weak. I will add that he also wants to avenge that he was banished and humiliated. Freeing the Japanese from his oppression is nowhere on his list of goals. That is one of the results with which he legitimizes his rebellion (what I said above: a long-term benefit). Katniss is an inadequate example because she didn't care about justice or revenge either, she was only drawn into the issue of rebellion because of the influence she had over the population. She was used as a symbol for anti-establishment propaganda and, technically, she never stepped out of that role, even though she did participate in the rebellion. Katara wanted revenge on the guy who killed her mom, it was revenge and the show tells you it's not right (and since she's a hero, she ends up doing the right thing: not getting revenge). 4:34 Suzaku is the son of the Prime Minister of Japan. That's a detail you don't want to miss. 4:50 I agree, Montana. 6:31 That boy is Kallen's brother and the previous resistance leader Naoto. You should remember him. 6:45 That man is a tailor who made the suit and mask of Zero and we saw him in the first episode. He was the man that Lelouch took over to play chess with the nobleman, do you remember? 10:45 Good memory, Kenny. This man is Diethard Ried and together with Lloyd Asplund (the scientist who created the Lancelot) they are practically the only citizens of Britannia who are aware of the cruel reality and admit that they are participants in it. Diethard is one of the most interesting and most underrated supporting characters. I'll talk about him when we know more about his motivations. I advise you not to take your eyes off him. 14:03 Here you see for the first time the Japanese Liberation Front, which is the largest resistance group in all of Area 11 (it's made up of the old Japanese military). It is relatively important. 14:37 You're right, Kenny. This character is Tohdoh and was voiced by Steve Blum in this dub. Clovis mentioned him in the Battle of the Shijunku Ghetto when comparing him to Lelouch due to his tactical genius. He and the rest of the Japan Liberation Front were watching the broadcast of Suzaku's execution, and Tohdoh particularly watched it out of the corner of his eye, with complete disinterest. After Zero performs his first miracle, Tohdoh is completely absorbed in what he is looking at. This ties in with what he said in this scene, about how you have to distinguish miracles from recklessness. Even if he doesn't want to admit it, Tohdoh just saw a "miracle". 15:05 You got it right. Suzaku is an idealist and is also a moralist. This is all I can say for now. 19:28 So technically Kallen wasn't driving Clovis' vehicle. That could be a metaphor for Zero and his cause: it's all appearances. 22:25 As Lelouch explains in the next episode, Orange is to provide "justification". Everyone will believe that Jeremiah agreed to Zero's demands by letting Suzaku go and attacking his own subordinates so that Zero would not reveal the reason behind the embarrassing nickname "Orange" (no one would think that Jeremiah was under mind control). It seems to me that the second question came too soon. And, regarding the third, I would say that the miracle was that Code Geass won after suffering several defeats. After watching a teenager bend the will of others with a magical eye, a girl surviving a gunshot wound is no big deal. Less if she was the one who gave him that power. There are other things I could highlight, but other comments have already done so and I have shown my support. Thanks for this reaction!

The scene on the train where the contrast about the two sides are clearly shown reminds me of Arcane. A very prosperous place full of life and light, and on the other side of the road there is ruins, darkness and death.

The green haired girl is C2. In Japanese, she is CC. They clearly changed the name to keep with the spirit of the name. Her name is supposed to be alien and inhuman. To that end, her name wouldn't sound crazy in English. I'm sure you've met someone that goes by CJ or TJ or something like that. So, CC wouldn't sound too odd in English.

Best thing and difference between Kira and Zero-- the geass plays only a support role more than a main focus. Classic mistake many watchers and even many characters make-- The geass doesn't make the man, but rather, the man's wishes become his geis, or geass.
@theredeft5319
@theredeft5319 Жыл бұрын
Right. Lelouch has a team of people of chess pieces at his command. He isn’t always using his geass. Plus he is quite literally waging war on a nation vs Mira just trying to get rid of criminals.
@darknesswave100
@darknesswave100 Жыл бұрын
Yeah that's the thing about the comparison I don't really like. Some people act like the geass is used constantly when in reality it's used sparingly for greater impact whereas light used the death note constantly and was a focal point of the entire show and without it light wouldn't be able to do anything

For me what makes Lelouch different from light is because he fully knows he is bad as he said don`t kill if you don`t expect to be killed, he doesn`t see himself as someone untouchable. He is distrusting of people because his extended family literally went on and did attempt to kill everyone he cared for + himself included. He is focused on the results but to this point he had not put innocent people in direct danger especially not on purpose with the idea they to die. Both principals of you should not do bad in hopes to do big good because it is still bad and the principle or the idea of your good in small scale can literally overthrow and make horrible system good are too extreme. In the current situation slow paced action from inside, if Zero didn`t show up to help Suzaku to seem more trustworthy for the Britannia, wouldn`t work. Suzaku idea is idealistic and noble but the reality wouldn`t allow it to work if the more direct approach of Lelouch wasn`t already in motion

Light killed criminals because his very likely reasoning could be that if there are no criminals, his father won't spend time away from the family. Being Gordon Ramsey is a very thankless job, and demands everything from a character that was inspired by him. The way Mr. Yagami is kept away from his family by the World makes Light mad, and madness is like gravity. All he needed was a little push.

The biggest problem with Suzaku is that he's TOO much of an idealist. He says oh I can change things from within while under the thumb of a government that took over Japan and are treating the Japanese people like they're less than human. That's what you want to change? The people that run the whole thing are racist towards the people they took over but oh I can change things even though I'm one of the people they're being racist towards. That kind of logic is moronic. Like how he got onto Lelouch for tricking people. I love this show (it's in my top 5 anime of all time) but Suzaku gets on my nerves so much in this show by how completely foolish he acts
