I like that Kirishima remained a primarily supportive role. He didn’t get the shonen flashback power up. They did a good job making the pros feel like pros without making the kids feel irrelevant or under/overpowered.

@@LD1E60 No not really. Kirishima was scared once his armor cracked. After he trained and unlocked his new power, he felt invincible only for it to be cracked in one hit. Which likely caused him a lot of pain. When he entered the fray a second time, he didn't power up he simply needed to muster the courage to withstand the pain and keep re-hardening again and again to withstand the blows. If you watched at the final clash with him, he lost his armor as he was getting ready to punch showing he reached his limit and had the guys punch connected he'd likely be dead.

One thing about this episode is that they really tone down/censure how hurt Red Riot is compared to the manga, like, poor boy is BLOODY! When he falls back into Fat Gum and you see his costume shredded all that skin visible is bloody muscle in the manga.

Fun fact: Eijirou Kirishima and Mina Ashido have actually been in several scenes together before this and some of their bios in the manga and other sources hinted that they knew each other since they are from the same prefecture. I just want to point out that Kirishima is a reverse Deku. Allmight brought up before how the greatest heroes have a moment where they start moving without even thinking to save someone and Deku having that despite being powerless is part of what cuased Allmight to choose him in the first place. Kirishima didn't have that. When someone needed him he froze and he is constantly forcing himself to be better, be a hero, and NEVER let it happen again.

The battle was a reference to the Japanese word for "contradiction" which contains the words "spear" and "shield". It comes from the legend that a merchant tried selling the emperor an "unbreakable shield" and an "unstoppable spear". When asked what would happen when both were used against each other, the merchant was unable to provide an answer hence the word was born. It is important to note that you can't have both shield and spear simultaneously (like tengai and Rappa) but you can have one at a time (like fat gum). Kirishima's wavering confidence is actually understandable, even without knowing his backstory. try to still keep in mind that Kirishima & Class 1-A are all around 14-15 years old at this time. unlike the Big 3, who are seniors in highschool, Class 1-A are freshman. The big 3 have had tons of experience and as such, they think and act very similar to pros, while still showing some inexperience and ignorance here and there. in fights, they have unwavering determinations and are able to give their all. Class 1-A have some experience, but they're still new to this type of work. Kirishima's always thinks less of himself because his quirk isn't as flashy as he'd like it to be, but at the same time, he tries to be as strong as his idol, and never giving in. but in this scenario, him thinking he's useless is not unbelievable. even though he won against a thug with his new ability, his body got wrecked by a villain in one punch, which knocked his confidence down a lot. at his age, coming out on top can make him more determined, but coming across someone else who knocks him down without breaking a sweat, is not something every freshman in highschool is equipped to handle. it happened with Yayorozu. even though he did bounce back, it ultimately does show his age.

This was one of my favourite moments with red riot, the dude is actually insane, the only person who ever defeated rappa was overhaul and I guess technically now fatgum tho it was with his own power. The fact kirashima is able to withstand his quick strong arm like that by getting more durable and then just remaking his destroyed armour faster than he can attack is absolutely amazing. And it’s implied that they would’ve been roughly equal if their last punches landed. The shield guy thought it was enough to warrant one of his barriers to protect rappa too.

I would've loved to have seen what would've happened if they were successful in trapping Erasurehead instead of Fatgum and Red Riot. Had they succeeded with there original plan it would've backfired spectacularly since he could've just cancelled Hekiji Tengai's quirk, and then take Rappa in a one on one fight with no barriers and easily overpower him.
