I think the true meaning of YOU ARE ONE AND RESPECT THE BALANCE is that as we grow old, we look at our younger selves as different people. Your younger and older self are one and the same. When we're young, we need to learn how to take care care of ourselves, so when we grow old, we become healthier and the best version of ourselves. When Sue starts becoming rebellious and starts breaking the rules, Elisabeth becomes more bitter and uglier. I think Sue represents how Elisabeth used to be when she was younger since they shared the same consciousness. Man, this movie is deep on so many levels.
@jayfrancelf12 сағат бұрын
Exactly. I thought this was obvious when I watched it in the theater but now that I’ve seen a bunch of reactions here on YT, it’s clear that a lot of people aren’t understanding that. This is the exact same thing I said to my wife when she watched it a couple days ago. 20 yr old you is NOT the same person as 50 yr old you - even though they’re both YOU.
@jamaljames933110 сағат бұрын
I definitely agree with you that Sue is a representation of what Elisabeth was like back in her prime years, when she was younger and fame got in her head to the point she ended up having a very lonely life in the present day of the movie's story. It really adds a lot of depth to why she is the way she is, and why we don't see her reaching out to any genuine friends and family or vice versa (not counting Fred)! She more than likely pushed all of those meaningful connections away, or people who she used to be close with grew to despise her for her narcissism and selfishness! Her current predicament is the consequence she is living with, for what she's allowed fame to do to her. But she uses the Substance to relive the life she used to have as Sue as a way of escaping those consequences.

She's saying all that hurtful shit to herself, her true self the matrix, and the matrix in turn is spiraling, hurting herself to hurt the other self by gorging herself and being unsociable and unkind to her body. This whole movie is an allegory of self-hate, the self-destructive pursuit of youth and perfection, and how unkind people can be to themselves when they see their imperfections.

They share the same consciousness, those lights you see in between them switching bodies is her consciousness going in between bodies. They also share dreams, the reason she doesn't take care of herself is because she has become addicted to being young and hates herself old. It's also a drug metaphor. Young Sue and Older Elisabeth are just different aspects of her consciousness, they experience the world in different ways. You can see Elisabeth is always anxious to go back to Sue, and because Sue is young she is reckless and irresponsible with the substance. The film tells us multiple times that they are one, they cannot exist without the other. When they are both are awake I think that they have developed a split personality. Elisabeth also constantly beats her own head saying "stop it stop it" Because she can't control herself "Sue" this is where the addiction metaphor comes in.
@d4c46710 сағат бұрын
they don't share a conscious. The movie's events don't make sense if they do. if they shared one then why did Elizabeth wake up and was shocked Sue stole her show? in turn why was Sue shocked when she saw the mess of food Elizabeth left all over the apartment? Why would Elizabeth be shocked about Sue in the New Years Show? I know the movies premise is less sympathetic if they don't share a memory but theres way too many instances of the characters not knowing what the other is doing for it to make sense

We’ve all looked in the mirror and not like what we’ve seen at one point and not been happy with what we’re eating or exercising, and got upset, but Elisabeth has an extreme insecurity and self-hatred, and it’s easier to escape into Sue then dealing with her emotions… plus the add keeps saying “they are one”

There's a scene where it makes it look like it's a "transfer of conciousness", however it wasn't a transfer, it was the creation of Sue's conciousness. They are one, they are both Elisabeth Sparkle's mind, they are simply receiving different input, so their choices, outlook and life are different. Sue is receiving constant adulation, praise and love (even though it is sycophantic) so she hates her "old self" and resents having to share her life with her. Which simply speaks to the idea that the Young despise the idea of getting old, they resent their aging, imperfection and weakness.

One way I interpreted the relationship between Elisabeth and Sue is that it’s a sort of an allegory to motherhood and raising a child. Sue is literally birthed out of Elisabeth. And even though she’s a full grown adult, she still is brand new to the world she’s birthed into. She has to feed off of Elisabeth’s spinal fluid the same way a newborn must be breastfed. They are “one” in the way a newborn and it’s mother are one with each other, therefore there is a responsibility that both of them have to each other. But unfortunately, Elisabeth loses the ability or will to take care of herself and Sue, instead resenting how Sue’s existence has overshadowed her own. This in turn causes Sue to devalue and rebel against Elisabeth. The casting of Margaret Qualey as Sue is perfect to this because she is the daughter of the actress, Andy McDowell who once had her hay day.

Their separate consciousness is a metaphor for self-hatred, specifically regarding aging, from the perspective of the younger and older self. Imagine someone telling you "You look old." Most would feel affronted because we don't like picturing ourselves as wrinkly prunes. Teens and young adults take all sorts of "preventive" supplements and procedures to delay the innevitable. Meanwhile, older people undergo surgery to look younger. It's the same self-hatred; the movie just amplified it to a 1000.

just in case anyone finds this info useful in the future: i was taught that when you're doing sutures you start in the middle of the wound in order to make sure that the edges meet evenly and you don't find out as you're doing the stitches that you have a little gap at one end or something. also, sue was doing them correctly in that it's not a continuous thread like with sewing clothes. it's a lot harder for sutures to adjust to your movement if you treat it like a seam in fabric and if the one thread snaps anywhere along it's length you're kinda fucked. you make the single loop to connect the edges and tie it off, leaving gaps in between the stitches. this both allows for flexibility and means that a stitch can fail individually without reopening the whole wound. 🌟🌈 the more u know

The sad thing is that this is not far from reality. Poor Fred was probably the only good guy in this movie but god bless him he had NEGATIVE RIZZ 😅🤣 This was without a doubt the most unhinged movie i've seen in a good while, and while the story seemed pretty straightforward, the ending kinda flipped the switch on us with the scene when everyone welcomes her like "we love you we love you" in her monster form, acting like they're still seeing Sue, or even the original Elisabeth, shifted it to a more metaphorical message. As a guy watching, for me it wasn't just about women having to appear pretty, but having to fake your personality to fit social constructs, this is something everyone can relate to, not just women. The public, or even worse, the media persona takes energy away from the original personality, it takes more and more and the real you gets more tired and tired to fit this picture of you for the outside world, clear analog of the clone stealing more and more stabilizer fluid from the original body. The third act for me was a metaphor for a full mental breakdown, the public persona "kills" the core personality but without it starts to fall apart, having to rebuilt itself the best way it can, but the result is just a bad patchwork of what it used to be, the public realizes the "farce" the loved person not really being as cool or hot as it appeared to be and promptly, gets rid of it. The part when she screams "it's still me" was so 🦆ing sad ... because they don't care about YOU, they care about the image you show, and if you can't do that anymore because you're tired of pretending, your a$$ is grass. And that's the real message and the real horror of this movie for me

50:02 not she wouldn't control herself, she hates herself so much that she was willing to do some experimental drug to be young and hot. To treat herself like shit everytime she switches, to eventually extract as much spinal fluid as possible to never have to deal with her older self. She is addicted to change herself as much as she has to, to fit the beauty standard, to not age. Elisabeth doesn't think she deserves a good life, because all of her self worth is about how beautiful and young she is. Eventually we all grow older and everyone knows that if you take care of yourself while being young, you'll be healthier when you are older, yet sometimes we take our bodies to the extreme and then complain on why are backs hurts so much or whatever issue we have. We don't always take care of ourselves, because we don't necessarily think about your older self. If anything this movie made me appreciate my body a little bit more, I don't have to love every part about myself, I prefer to be comfortable and happy with who I am, that I'm healthy and living my life without thinking too much about others think about me. This movie is truly food for thought. Sorry if the text is a bit all over the place, this movie gave me lots to think about and english is not first language.

Dennis Quaid's character is meant to be a dead ringer for Harvey Weinstein (they even have the same first name) and from what I've heard his depiction is no exaggeration either.

Dennis Quaid brought a far greater energy and charisma to the production, the director and all the producers agree. Ray Liotta would have been a disservice.

Demi Moore isn't half as daring as you guys are for putting up this reaction partially uncensored lol

completely 😭 saw some other persons reaction not too long ago where they blurred the whole screen but randomly forgot to extend the blur all the way to the end of the clip
