As a polish Japanese and Taiwanese person it makes me sad how the nazis tainted the sawastika. In Japan and in Taiwan the sawastika is seen as an important and sacred buddhist symbol. The sawastika has its origins in India as a Hindu symbol for peace and spirituality. But I agree, as a polish person who has had ancestors killed in nazi concentration camps, I would feel weird using the sawastika in my practice.

Yeah it is awful! From the top of my head I would say it’s probably the one symbol that was destroyed the most…

11:40 I remember posting online about how I offered a poem to freyja bc that's all I had the energy for and someone in the comments was made it their mission to invalidate my practice by any means necessary. All bc "it's not like how my mom raised me to give offerings" like I know fuk all about your family and their tradition and I don't care to know bc it's not my family to begin with. It was funny to see but then again, that's witchtok for you 😂

Wicca is bashed because it’s literally just the built the same way Christianity was made, a bunch of different practices taken and merged into one, it has some elements of practices that were straight up taken

The difference between Christianity And Wicca is that Christianity is a religion from hundred of years ago during a time where there were other pagan religions and there was synchronisation of people and religions. Wicca is based in misinformation in the 70s

As an American yeah it’s quite hard connecting to my ancestral traditions and homeland. I always identify as an Italian American or Greek American or German-American because that’s just what its right in my opinion. Even in these sub-groups will have adapted within American culture for example Pennsylvania Dutch where most of my German family comes from has their own special folk traditions and culture, same with Italian American traditions it has Italian and Germanic traditions but it’s not the same as in the actual native cultures in Germany or Italy and such. It be different say I decided to move to Germany or Italy or Cyprus and I’m interacting with the land and people. For people that are like Americans kinda have to be eclectic in a way. Example a lot of traditional herbs don’t grow in America so one has substitute for these herbs. It’s hard, my father was adopted so I never grew up with Italian or Greek culture but I’m trying my best and I know many people are reconnecting to their roots.

As an American, saying your ancestry is part of the culture. Because its such a melting pot, recognizing the parts of your history that pre-date American assimilation helps to show your pride in your past as well as your present. It helps others acknowledge the influences on your family that they may not immediately recognize as well. I'm not sure I said this as eloquently as I could, but Americans aren't out right stating that they have the same claim to their ancestral homeland as those raised there.

I agree with you. 💯 I'm Lakota and we continually have non-Native people trying to learn our various languages, dating an Indigenous/Native person and then claiming that someone adopted them into the tribe but that's only one person who considers them a personal relation. There are over 500 federally recognized tribes in the U.S. A non-Native person can never be part of any of the 500 different cultural ceremonies. They can participate in a ceremony but never be part of the tribe. Non-Native people must return to their own ancestral ties in order to belong.

i've been "witching" or a pagan since 1983 (sooooo, born 50-60 years ago and not stupid) and i'm american. it's so very important for each of us to have our *own* practice. that means *no basics*. the thing is, it's vital that we not be "followers". my seven year old granddaughter has more magic in her pinky than most have in their entire body and she doesn't follow *any* rules. as far as culture, it has been proven that people traveled even in ancient times and they shared their culture and adopted practices from each other. why must anyone "reconnect" with anything? americans are americans and, like any other country, there is ancestry from all over the world. see arith harger's video on native vs indigenous.

I grew up with Danish culture being a large part of my upbringing as a fourth generation Danish-American. I find it annoying when others tell me to let go of that “obsession”. No I don’t consider myself Danish, but I am of Danish descent. People need to come to terms with the fact that White American culture is an amalgamation of European cultures instead of shaming us for it.

@@TheNorseWitch I wasn’t aware of that but I’m not surprised due to the disconnect. I’m hopeful I’ll be able to save up for a trip to Denmark and other countries in the coming years. It will be cool to see what’s been kept alive in the US vs how things have changed overseas. It’s always nice to find people who don’t think we’re weird for wanting to keep our connections to the places our families came from. I’m in the process of exploring other heritages we have, as my family focused heavily on Danish culture despite having Irish and Welsh as well.

Im an american who grew up on the gulf coast of texas. I grew up around more asian and latin cultures than the germanic (likely anglo saxan and old norse due to region), english, scottish, and french of my ancestors. A lot of old wives tales that folk practices are built around are from cultures i dont feel totally comfortable dipping into beyond the kind of things that just make sense. I've made the decision to learn about my ancestral roots and their practices, and take that knowledge and see how they would apply that to the area I live in. what plants and land features serve similar purposes, how would the climate change shift what they saw as important? that kind of thing. I cant imagine Odin, the god that wanders in search of knowledge, wouldn't approve of this.

I find Wicca gets a lot of disrespect. In the late 90's/early 2000's, there were shows like Buffy and although it pushed Wicca into the public consciousness (there was a character in it calling herself a Wiccan when she was only a witch) made it look like a trendy thing like emo kids in the 2000's. Then there is the assumption that Wiccans appropriate things and there are Volkish movements in Heathenry (something that has it's own problems) hating on it. Over the past couple of years, I find that I really don't know anything about Wicca at all, other than the stereotypes that have been projected on it, which may, or may not be true. There is a lot of misunderstanding and ignorance about it.

I agree with a lot of the things you said. I have been feeling like I'm doing things wrong because I didn't do spells that went on for days or weeks and always stick to simple, minimal spells. Also doing the research in the beginning without social media is so important. I have been connecting with my land through my shamanic journeys & reading tons and tons of books recently doing research to get as much information as possible (and I usually read the old books to get the "old" wisdom). Now I can start to feel how my practice changes after I develop my own spells and practice. P.S. deine Tattoos sind richtig toll und ich lieb sie alle 🤗😄

As a Hungarian/Ukrainian (Canadian), I grew up immersed with the language, dance, recipies from family, and traditions (spirituality) of these nationalities and when family visits we all are treated as one from the country ( maybe this is just the way our family descided to be.) When asked what my nationality is I always say Hungarian/Ukrainian before saying I live in Canada. Maybe this is a generational thing or how I was brought up, but I have never felt removed from the country of my aunts/uncles and grandparents (our family has not been here for very long) When I talk to family this is also how they feel - we travel alot back and forth. I feel more this(European) then I do Canadian. I hope this made sense

About the last one, someone told me I'm not a "true heathen" because of my interest and background in the sciences, and having not fully read the Eddas at this point, among other things. You're in good company then... I've read Kevin Crossley Holland's Norse Myths and that's about it, but it's silly to say that you aren't since they often ignore Saxo and the Anglo-Saxon take on things and I often find it difficult to decide where continental Celtic myths and deities end and where the Nordic/Germanic ones begins (I am currently researching Nehalennia and no one is quite sure if she is Celtic, Germanic or Roman... There is a lot to cover with that alone. Then there is the Slavic, Finnish and Baltic myths to consider, too. It's like saying someone isn't a Star Trek fan unless they've committed every episode, film, book and comic to memory and can recite how warp technology works.

I had the owner of a metaphysical shop in my town tell me I should focus exclusively on plants and herb magic. I know nothing about plants or herbs, I can't identify most common plants and I'm not much for kitchens even though I love concoctions. I've tried, but I just struggle so much to work with plants, I do much better with energy intention, candle magic and drinkable concoctions like special teas, coffees and hot chocolate drinks. L ove the uncrossing idea. I agree with practioners online. Also love the point about the plant spirits. Oh I've bern told I should not follow Odin, because I could not take bluntness, meaning I was too soft and did not follow their rules, that have absolutely nothing to do with their practice. It went too far and they percieved "me as an evil homophobe." I get where that comes from, but I wish people would ask moee questions and not assume stuff. I am Fluid and Pan! From the beginning they pushed the udea tha5t the God reaching out to me was Odin. It turned out to be Freyr, and another person decided I was working with demons, not Norse Gods. I'd think if it was truthfully a problem, Odin himself would tell me and he was associated with the Horned God, hence the devil, so.... . I think the word they should have saud was spirit you don't want around, ill intent, and I wish the first pwrson had started with I suggest. I wish I could have just ugnored them. ❤

Also, as an American, I think the practice of calling ourselves what our heritage is happens because most of us aren’t first gen, if that makes sense. I live in an area with a lot of German ancestry, with not a lot of first gen German Americans. It makes sense to say I’m German in convo because of that. I recently got to meet someone who is from here, but living in Sweden. I would normally say I’m Swedish if people asked where I have heritage, but I just told him I have a lot of Swedish ancestry, because im not Swedish. It’s more of a context thing. Online or talking to someone international, I would add that I have “a lot of ancestry” or the “-American”

@TheNorseWitch
@TheNorseWitch Ай бұрын
They’re extremely overused and overestimated. They really only make sense for a specific type of spell where something’s supposed to be held or caught or is supposed to stay the same… not for spells where something’s supposed to be increased. A prosperity jar for example in my opinion only makes sense for savings, but not to get a raise. An airy spell jar only makes sense for enhancing your memory, not to become smarter, etc.

20:47 sorry but to the one person who posted that response...swastika predates germany. it's not about "reclaiming" that symbol, it's about always having it. it belonged to a lot of asian cultures and has different meaning before it was perverted into something else. i think it should be fine for even non asians to use it because we have to understand, the sins of our fathers is not of our own. to me, by putting a "no go zone" in a sacred symbol that originated from other cultures because of how some western countries used it in the past, is equivalent to cultural hegemony also, when it comes to cultural appropriation, i disagree with people who say you can't practice what's from other culture. hoarding and gatekeeping is a human thing. i highly doubt the deities and magick in general will discriminate because of the colour of people's skin or what language they speak.
