Love the rain on the roof. My Mom and I watched your videos when I was caring for her. She always wanted a cabin in the woods of Minnesota like yours. Mom grew up in Southern Minnesota but moved to San Diego as a bride. We really enjoyed your videos. She has passed on now at the age of 91, I will watch your videos for her now. I just happened to be watching the video this morning, during a gentle rain down here in VA. Before the brain tumor I used to try and maintain several hiking and mountain biking trails here at the farm. But these days only a handful are still maintained. Up before the sun with the first cup of coffee in hand I watched the sunup. So bright was the sun that I just knew a beautiful day was coming. Well in about 15 to 20 minutes the sky was dark again and I saw heavy clouds blocking the sun. Another 10 minutes went by, and the rain started and lasted all day. In a way I saw two sunrises on the same day for one cup of coffee long. I enjoy rainy days when I stay dry and warm in the old riparian retreat and watch out the windows for birds and other critters. TheNorthwoodsman1 is extremely enjoyable!!!!!

My Grandfather had a room added on to his house with windows all the way around it so he could just look outside. His recliner wasn't tall enough to see out the window as good as he wanted to so he built a platform to lift it up about 4 inches.

Martin needs a riding lawn mower for those trails. I like spending a little virtual time out at Martin's cabin to take my mind off politics for a few minutes. It's a nice respite. My Dad always used to tell me, "if nothing else in life, at least, always make sure that you eat good"! Martin does eat good out at his cabin. 🙂

So many trees have blown over right at the cabin that I have no use for all that falls on the trails. It is mostly balsam and by the time it falls it is too far gone for fire wood. Note the one handed pitch of very light sections.

I'm a bit surprised that you aren't clearing up the blowdowns to use for firewood. We find at our cabin that the blowdowns are almost sufficient to provide firewood for the time we spend at the cabin. It appears you just toss them off the trail.

I do toss trail wood off the trail but that is because there is so much blowdown and other dying trees right at the cabin. I even need to have big bon fires there to keep ahead of it. The best goes in the woodshed but many of the dead trees are balsam and if not cut right away will not serve for firewood.

Martin, you are a trusting soul, 99% of hunters care about the rules and respect others. That 1% are either shot fixated horn hunters (ones that only see bragging as hunting) or ones that think they know everything and care about nothing (shoot first at anything). Martin, I suppose you keep the solar panels up now...I am wondering how they are working for you... I subscribe to many prepper/homesteader channels and we/they are always trying to help people that may have no heat or electric. They tend to say, "oh, ho hum, not reliable, not enough, what do you do when it is cloudy, etc. I am curious how well solar works for you. Trying to help everybody, any input would be appreciated.

For my use the solar panels have really done the job well. I have about 6 car batteries so a string of snowy days is no problem. I seem to get enough charge on cloudy days so that has never been an issue. I use a digital voltmeter to keep a close eye on each batteries charge level. I try to only run them down about a third to extend their lives which runs to over 10 years with my use. I only use the lead acid and not the deep discharge types as they will not hold a charge while I am away.

The cabin is a long time project. I have more logs and stones to haul in with the Snowdog this winter. I also hope to get started on sawing up roof and floor planks from the larger logs. When I have all the things set I hope to have a big cabin raising week and invite all who would like to erect it.
