I’m a CNA and have been working in peds for 2.5 years and will be attending an ABSN program this fall-so excited because I want to continue my peds career. Best distraction I do for getting a kid’s BP is making sound effects. “This is my blood pressure cuff & it’s going to hug your arm just like mama or daddy hugs you (whoever is in the room). It’s going to puff up like a balloon watch: Boom, boom, boom, bloop” Pre-Covid they always stared at the funny faces I made, but now it’s a bit harder😅

Yes!! Parents are KEY!! Building a good rapport with our patient’s parents makes the day more smooth. At the end of the day parents are NOT the worst part about pediatrics, they’re just scared about their babies.

This to me is so suprising because when I was a kid, I never kick or screamed while the nurse checked my vitals. I would cry when I needed a shot, but that was it. This opened my eyes and now I know it will be a challenge I am looking forward to!!
@lannette75614 жыл бұрын
I think it’s so great how you explained that health care professionals should come from a place of understanding when it comes to dealing with parents. This is extremely important especially when it comes to difficult parents. Understanding where they are coming from will help with not taking their behavior and emotions personally!
@monicasibrian80894 жыл бұрын
Yes!! Building that trust is KEY in peds. It upsets me so much when parents threaten their kids by saying “if you don’t calm down I’m going to tell the nurse to give you a shot” that instills so much fear towards medical professionals and completely breaks that trust. Being patient and honest with the little ones is the way to go.

I just took OB and Peds last semester since I’m in an accelerated LPN program and I failed because it’s so hard. I got a little discouraged because I really want to work in labor and delivery or pediatrics but I won’t give up. I get to retake it at least at my college. But I dealt with a lot of kids at my last clinical rotation at a children’s hospital where I live and your so right everything is totally different dealing with kids

I loved my pediatric rotation in school! The med surg was a little sad though, because you see the parents fighting over custody, and families crumbling due to long term illnesses and the stress that comes with it. Breaks my heart. I think pediatric ER would be awesome

Questions for fellow Primary care nurses! Is there any good book to read for primary care? I feel super overwhelmed and i;ve been working a little over a year and there is ALWAYS something new to learn about on a daily. Questions ranging from breastfeeding to more adult-like questions from our 18+ kiddos. Any advice on how to study up or a good book to pick? I've always admired ER nurses since you have to know a little bit about everything since you just NEVER know what is coming through the door! But it almost feels like that in the PC side; need to know at least a little bit about everything! :)
