He's using a triplet lick that just really doesn't fit there. It sounds so off because the snare has been on the 2 and 4 the whole time and here he decides to play with it and hit on other off beats. This ends up throwing off the time because the drums are really the main timekeeping instrument letting you know where the beat lies. When he starts hitting it on other spots it just really distracts and you lose your sense of time with the snare being so loud. You can see it in the video too, Theo Katzman hears this and looks over at the drummer (being one himself). Intentionally messing with time can be cool in other situations just not this one.

I agree and disagree. A huge solo would be satisfying at a very basic level and would be fun to jump around to, but the mellow breakdown creates tension far more intense than cranking it up ever could. l o w v o l u m e
