This has really made a visible difference. I have lived in Belize on the Gulf of Honduras for over 20 years. When I first came there was plastic garbage washing up onto the beach every day. It was very obvious that the majority of the plastic was from Hispanic countries, and products that are not sold in Belize. This year I remarked that there was visibly much less plastic washing up onto the beach than there had been years before.

They should realize there is money to be made in trash. Installing laws such polluter pays principles can help create a waste and recycling sector which in turn creates jobs and supports your economy. We are here to significantly reduce the amount of trash entering the Caribbean Sea from the Motagua River. We see this Interceptor deployment as the fastest way to achieve this goal. Upstream changes are part of the solution too, but these changes require time. We hope that one day our Interceptor Barricade will no longer be needed, and we know that the authorities are working to prevent the trash from flowing into the river. But we also know that these periodic tsunamis of trash continue to cause great harm to the oceans. We want to ensure that the Barricade prevents this river debris from becoming ocean pollution to give us the time needed to address the waste management issues behind the problem.

@MrPeterCrenshaw3 ай бұрын
Improper disposal of local garbage is only the minor part of the root problem. The major part is global garbage trade. The USA and EU among others ship their garbage to Guatemala, India and other countries. This is even considered recycling in the countries of origin. Guatemala can’t handle the wast amount of westerners garbage though.

Thanks for your work. You mentioned the garbage dump at the beginning of the river in an earlier video and that a lot of trash comes from there when it is flooded. Does the state of Guatemala do anything to close this dump or fix the problem? Because it sounded like that's the source for quite a lot of trash in the river. Seems unlogical that they bring the trash there in trucks and dump it onto the river and you then have to get it out and put it in trucks again. But again: thanks for your hard work. You are doing a great job and achieve maximum impact with minimum recources.

Interesting. Where I live we have a slightly different system. We use trash cans, dumpsters and garbage trucks that put the trash into a landfill. Then we collect methane from the landfill that gives us a cheap source of energy. The landfills break down most of the trash and after a cyclone of a few decades the land can be repurposed into a park or something. You should totally try it. It's better than tossing your crap in a river and hoping that someone else comes by and cleans everything up for you.
@electroplaque3 ай бұрын
Lol, a landfill does not break down plastics in any meaningful time. And plastics are a huge part of trash. Also this trash comes from a landfill/dump site when a flash flood hits. I doubt you live in a place with the same weather conditions.
