The Ocean Cleanup

4 жыл бұрын

On October 26 2019, Boyan Slat presented the plan to address the main source of ocean plastic: rivers. Subscribe to our channel: bit.ly/371k8sN
We aim to tackle the 1,000 most polluting rivers, responsible for about 80% of ocean plastic pollution, before the end of 2025.
To learn more and support the cleanup, visit: bit.ly/3leiT33
--
To rid the oceans of plastic, we need to not only clean up what is already out there, but also stop new plastic from entering the ocean: we need to close the tap.
Rivers are the main source of ocean plastic pollution. They are the arteries that carry waste from land to the ocean. Our research found that 1000 rivers are responsible for roughly 80% of the pollution.
Working together with government leaders and private corporations, our goal is to tackle these 1000 most polluting rivers, all over the world, by 2025. How? By deploying Interceptors.
The Interceptor is The Ocean Cleanup’s answer for river plastic waste. It is the first scalable solution to prevent plastic from entering the world’s oceans from rivers.

In each one of the demonstrations, talks or speeches, the inventor needs to explain what happens to fish and other sea life. How they escape this machine and don't get caught up to their death. How do they get away? This is vital to all of the sea life and very important to us all.

Seriously - Im crying. I am so proud, moved, touched and happy to see... a river cleaning thing ! and seriously Im crying here, I broke down as the music played and the screen went up - I am so proud of Boyan, he has created a business that is fixing one of the most serious issues on the planet. helping make the world better for my kids, and their descendants. He was designing this stuff when most of us would have still been at school. Genius, and incredibly decent guy. I just leveled off, put the tissues down, then boom... we have one cleaning here, and another cleaning there... crying again. Boyan if you ever read this, or if a friend sees it and can pass a message on... THANK YOU. I wish I could be involved. I bet his company would be fantastic to work for. cant think of many jobs that would give such meaning and satisfaction. do you think my Gold swimming certificate is good enough - I dont thank any of my other qualifications count... Im doing a counselling course, maybe I could become an advocate for the fish or something... rehabilitate any confused crabs ?

I'm with you on this! My greatest concern on this planet is our overlooked oceans and this young genius is addressing it with his amazing idea that started out as long little nets and into this beautiful machine. I worry for the fish if they get caught up in it also. I wish he'd have covered this part. We are supposed to take care of all the wildlife as good stewards and we have really let the oceans and rivers down. As humans. No matter if most of them are in a certain area. Education matters and he is educating them all out there!

See, this is how your wrong about that. "I'm not a conservative, and I love this" is a thing you can say. "I'm a conservative and I love this" is also a thing you can say, but then you have to add "while choosing to support and allowing my decisions to be informed by a group of people who not only stand opposed to the fundamental idea of helping restore the planet, but also ignore the largest scientific consensus possible to deny the planet needs help. Because of my inability to put the health of the planet above my desire to stop progressive social reform and pay lower taxes, I am personally … PERSONALLY responsible for seeing 1000s of other projects like this defunded, 100s of thousands of scientists working towards other solutions discredited and I, again, personally, will continue to support policy that will harm the earth faster then any machine, any FLEET of machines could fix it. Somehow, I fall to see the inescapable contradiction in this." So, can you see how that makes it a conservative or liberal issue? How one group gets to say they love this and support the idea at all costs, and the other gets to say they love how liking this KZbin video somehow makes them feel better about the fact that the problem this guy is trying to solve is THEM

@@talhatariqyuluqatdis id agree, but this is different. Country doesnt need to fight climate as a policy for it to encourage this kind of entropenourship. As this is about direct polution, so all states should be very open to this as it matters how they want to present them selves. And it actually makes money! One example is a small country of Croatia. Its not much into anti climate change as it doesnt have the money for it or political will, and they use alot of hydro dams anyway. But they have had success in couple of green things. One is a super reliable 99% automated fast recycling separator machine. You basically dump trash in one end and comes out in 12 ends all separated ready to ship. And this works even for very small particles. Interestingly such separation is an issue.

It's a nice sentiment, but foolish. It's great to have a life goal EXAMPLE: "Put a colony on Mars". The problem is you have an all or nothing attitude when it comes to problem solving, you end up either obsessed with the problem, or cut corners that can be very dangerous and destructive to reach said goal. The key is having a dream you can pass onto to a new generation of problem solvers. Sustainable is what I'm getting at. Last thing I want is people like this going out of business. I want them in business for a long time even after they retire.

@@SSingh-nr8qz I don't think the OP meant it in that regard. I read it as, "wow, someone trying to solve a problem that has direct consequences to human and marine life.. but also isn't worried about padding out there bottom line" I agree that having an all or nothing attitude could become problematic but at the moment, since there aren't any huge initiatives being implemented globally, this is the first step for more companies old and new to jump into and throw in their 2cents.

As time has proven, it's the "average" people like you and me that make the difference. Sometimes I struggle to see the relevance of governments anymore... many are corrupt and at the end of the day, the changes for the better still end up coming from the private sector... when those with the desires/ideas, team up with those with the skills and are aided by those with the means anything is possible! The only purpose government serves in that equation is to gain permission from... like grumpy, old, out-of-touch parents...

@Lance Penguin All of us decided what's good and wrong, and not just by a great structure of rules or ideas of what's good and bad as people may think, like laws, the real thing that keeps this world apart from madness or chaos you maid said is common sense. Carl Jung in his observations in children's plays and behaviors look to this, when kids are playing during the game they settle a bunch of rules about what can and can not be do, all this comes naturally must of the time with out being said, and is the same thing in adult; of course we have structured rules in our societys but all of them come from a simple base of common sense and it have being improving with the years according with the specifics needs. I mean you gotta have a real mental problem or illness to not difference between bad and good, I know that doesn't mean that it's gonna stop someone to do something dishonest, but when someone do something bad, a crime or making a lot money dishonorable they know that they are doing something bad and we damn know to, the only thing is that they choose no to care, as well as someone who got rich honestly decided that he would care about being honest.

Unlike the Ocean Cleanup project, these polluting rivers are likely near high poverty, high population areas. All the metal, solar panels, computer equipment, and cables would likely fetch a hefty price for someone who has nothing to lose. The Interceptors are sitting ducks from thieves as they are anchored in the river without anyone guarding them. All it would take is one boat full of destructive people 15 minutes to completely cripple the vessel.

I always watch videos from Slat with mixed emotions. On one hand, I'm grateful for extraordinary individuals like him who is forward-thinking problem solver. Someone who has a clear vision and the ability to implement and inspire. It's daunting to go from having a brilliant idea to having a fleet of vessels that are actually doing the cleanups. Bravo! On the other hand, it is also extremely sad to see how inept and useless the governments are from around the world. Most of these governments would spend money to initiate a slogan chanting campaign with zero motivation of actually making a difference.

@Donald Kasper he has already made other prototypes, he is doing something good, cleaning trash is the objective. He is a entrepreneur not a scammer because he actually has the inventions made. I also think u can't assume that he is a scammer because he is not. Also look up the age of plastic decomposing process and think about the amount of time things can travel in the ocean for years. One plastic bag can do this kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4TLeImdnMh7nJY

I'm in my late 70's and I know that the future of this globe is in good hands with young people like Boyan and the hundreds, if not thousands, of others who have taken it upon themselves to undo what we old farts helped to create. Good on all the visionaries who will not sit quietly by and give in to pollution, political corruption, and global destruction.

There is a difference between saying that and meaning it. They can run themselves out of business because their business consists of spending other peoples money to solve problems. They run on donations and grants after all. Smart marketing talk. Tbh the whole presentation is too much like the launching of a new iPhone. Stop talking about the product and start handing out opportunities to sponsor one. You know how many of these things could have been built for the cost of this event? The video carries well but so does footage of it at work on site. The need for this super glamorous event is actually kind of ugly considering what the thing does.
