Some things of note not included in the description of this match for people not familiar with this match, when the narrator says 200,300, and 600 he’s referring to hundreds of yards. We fire at a target 2 football fields away while standing and 3 or 6 football fields away lying prone with only a sling for support. When we fire at 300 yards we must fire 10 shots in 70 seconds, with a mandatory reload. Also, there are no sighters or “practice” shots allowed in this match. Competitors must know their rifles “zero” or how to adjust their sights to be able to hit their target at the three distances AND to compensate for the effects of wind and weather. Competitors are aiming for an x ring that is 3 inches across at 200 and 300 yards and 6 inches on the 600 yard target. This year the 100th place competitor fired a 289-4x out of a possible 300 points. Because this is only a 30 shot match, there is very little room for error. It makes for extra match pressure when competitors know that it is very difficult to make up for a bad shot in this match. Add to that is the fact that this match is only held once a year, one bad error can lead to a shooter missing their opportunity for another year. The majority of shooters will go their entire competitive shooting career and never make the cut. This match it the most prestigious service rifle match held in the United States. Congratulations to everyone who has made the cut.

Do you have to use an AR? Or can you use any rifle.

@@johngillespie3409 only service rifles are allowed in the National Trophy matches. Currently, the only rifles defined as US service rifles are the M1 Garand, the M14 type rifle, and the M16/AR15 type rifle. Accessories, slings, barrel length, sights/optics, and stocks are also defined in the CMP rule books. Note there is a separate rule book for trophy matches versus CMP Games matches. In direct response to your question, no, do not “have” to shoot an AR, but if you wish to be competitive, you will. There are a few very select individuals who have the skill to be competitive with either a Garand or M14, but I can’t remember seeing either of those rifles in the shoot off for as long as they’ve been doing the shoot off. There is a special prize awarded to the highest competitor shooting an M1 Garand. Bob Steketee has won this award multiple times, and he is an EXCEPTIONAL shooter. Considering the number of incredibly skilled shooters from AMU, USMC rifle team, California Grizzlies, and others, you are handicapping yourself by not shooting an AR based service rifle.

@@6x-Clean I was in the Infantry and shot an M-16A2 with iron sites as my service rifle. Had a Ruger 10/22, scope and Iron sites, I really liked shooting. I was wondering since civilians can do the contest, and I prefer the Ruger to the AR. Thanks for the informative comment. I

@@johngillespie3409 your Ruger 10/22 is a fine sporting rifle, but the National Trophy Matches such as the Presidents Rifle Match featured in this video are fired at 200, 300, and 600 yards. Your 10/22 would be an ideal candidate for the CMP Rimfire Sporter match. I encourage you to check the CMP’s website and KZbin channel for more information on this fun match. For a service rifle to use in the National Matches, I suggest you reach out to John Holliger at White Oak Arms. He and his staff are all incredible people who build some of the best rifles in the business. I can also strongly recommend Rich Hall and Fulton Firearms.

2010, OMG I feel old. My first year at Perry was 1990. Glad to see such a stellar performance by a New England shooter.
