In this part of our Makers of the Modern World series, we look at the Frankfurt school and its impact on the ideas of our contemporary world. The focus here is mostly on Theodor Adorno.

What a testament to the fallen state of humanity that a thinker can diagnose a problem correctly and yet go on to prescribe that which becomes worse.

Adam: This talking serpent is twisting God's word but I won't say anything for the sake of peace. Eve: This talking serpent is offering better advice than my husband. Modern Christians: Adam and Eve rebelled against God but we are more loving than God now. We will rebel against Him only 60% of the time. I think that's what you mean by "prescribe that which becomes worse".

That point around the 26 min mark, about deconstructing modernity is something I've thought about for a while. I think you see this played most obviously in the writings of J.R.R Tolkien (traditional critique of modernity) and how postmodern-progressives misinterpret him through their adaptations of his works. E.g. There's a traditional(ist) way of opposing industrialization and stewarding creation and a Marxist approach to environmentalism.

Tom Holland, the author not the actor), has said he will be writing a book on the 1960s. In his view, he believes historians will look back on that decade as every bit as cataclysmic for the West as was the Reformation.

Can anyone explain this. The subtitle of this book (or video) is "Makers of the Modern World". Yet when people on the Right point out the influence of the Frankfurt School and other "cultural Marxists" on "the modern world", they're accused of being "conspiracy theorists", etc. Now, simply because those on the Right are critical about this influence, and many on the Left are positive about the very same thing, both agree on the *influence* of the Frankfurt School on the modern world... surely.

Incredible series! Would you consider going through Michel Foucault, Jean Paul Sartre, Walter Benjamin, and Max Horkheimer as well? I studied them in college but would be good to hear them through the lens of a theological/Christian perspective like you do! Thank you!

With the rise of scientist-theologians in influence, a series on Jason Lisle, Dr. Jonathan Sarfati, Dr. Kurt Wise (young Earth) reasons to believe (old earth) and biologos (evolution) would be interesting.

Adorno was very much influenced by later Marxist thinkers like Antonio Gramsci, who moved towards critiquing the superstructure of society ("culture") rather than focusing on purely economic relations. Whereas orthodox Marxism reduces all social relationships to purely material economics. I didn't know Adorno's family converted to Protestanism. Alot of Jews who did so in Germany did so for social and political reasons, as the German government had a kulturkampf to create a Protestant national identity. Also, the Protestant church in Germany was more liberal at the time and was seen as a better identity for philosophers to explore new ideas. Heideggar, who was a Catholic convert to Protestantism, had similar reasons for conversion. Though I don't share all your theological perspective, I agree that Adorno very much puts his finger on the problems more than offering up sound solutions.

And, being critical of industry that has a direct influence upon a population is not inherently wrong. Yet, before he died, being directly influence on students...to upraise against the authority...is.

It would be worth studying the factor that so many of these people come from wealthy lapsed Jewish families. I suspect that the common factor is the "lapsed" part: they were not brought up in the faith, they had no trials in their own lives, and they consider themselves "elite". As a result, they feel a need to solve society's problems.
@benmizrahi2889

I suspect the common factor is "Jewish:\". Many of these people, even though they come from "lapsed" family, still had some Jewish education, even though very secularized one, and some of their most horrendous ideas seemed to be designed to achieve what Orthodox Jews would call "Tikkun Olam" (fixing the World, a nicer sounding term for Jewish world domination and baseless utopianism).
@Magnulus76
@Magnulus76 Жыл бұрын
I don't think the characterization of the families as "lapsed" does their motivations justice. They were influenced by the Enlightenment (similar to German Christians of the time) and the disappointment of Messianic movements (Sabatai Sevi, etc.).

I read Adorno and Horkheimer in grad school for English lit, and I was really put off by how much he hates everything, and how arrogant he is about everything he hates. Even apart from the arguments, he just presents himself as a complete jerk.

Marx, Adorno, Lenin (real name)?, Trotzki (real name?) - isn't it the spirit of fear not to mention the obvious here about who invented marxism and who financed it and who promotes it via media....i know YT has its tos, but still....

Trotski wasn't the guy's real name. Not sure about Lenin as I read both that Lenin was his actual family name and that it was a pen name adopted during his years in Switzerland.

@@benmizrahi2889 point of the matter is they're all part of a certain tiny ethnicity. it's amazing how a tiny minority is running the banks and hollywood and the entire media and also invented marxism. that can't be a weird coincidence. there needs to be an agenda to subvert taught to them from the day they are born and also a genetical predisposition to be good at it. of course, that does not include all of them, but on average that group is subversive.

Philosophical thought is largely mental masturbation. There are really only two ways. One is to recognize that we are within Nature, within what we desire to know and study and thus a one can study nature and know some things but ultimately our perspective is limited. This brings an appropriate humbleness. I believe this is what is meant by "the 'fear' of God is the beginning of all wisdom. The other is a spiritually Oedipal approach of wanting to deny Nature and Nature's God. This devolves into simple lust for power and various studies in the mechanisms of power and how to have power over one's fellow human beings and an impotent and ultimately disasterous lust to assert one's self as 'god' and above the natural world somehow. Thus Marxism, Satanism, other bullshit, etc. "You Gotta Serve Somebody."
