Theodore Bikel sings My Side of the Mountain. I've always loved this song, and quite a few folks (including myself) have looked for a stand alone version of it, but cannot find it save in the movie itself. I cleaned up and restored the audio as much as possible, so it is much clearer than the original muddy sound. I hope I don't have to remove the upload, and I hope you all enjoy this rare tune as much as me!
Lyrics:
Be gone be gone to warm and distant shores
Who knows if we shall meet another sun
Will I escape the wrath of men
And you the hunter's gun
And you the hunter's gun
Fly away little blackbird fly away
Spread your wings and fly away
If I should live to see another spring
Then we shall meet another day
Yes we shall meet another day
And when you are safe from winter's chilly air
Where rivers flow in gentler pace
Think of my side of the mountain turning bare
And of dead leaves giving chase
And of dead leaves giving chase
Fly away little blackbird fly away
Spread your wings and fly away
If I should live to see another spring
Then we shall meet another day
Yes we shall meet another day

Fun fact: when Bando (Bikel) sings "My Side of the Mountain" in the song, that is the only time that phrase, the movie's title is stated in the entire movie.

I agree, I wish he had too! Back when I cleaned up the audio on this I could have removed the background noise, but I wanted to keep it clean and original. One of these days I'd like to go back and see if I can't make it studio perfect, either way I'd like to learn how to play it on a guitar one day, that'd be a kick.

I've been a huge Bikel fan since my parents started getting his albums (mid 50's?). I was a child and my wonderful parents were young. Now they're gone, but they left me their love for music from many lands. And I have all of the LPs. Theo sang in some 20 languages. I have a son ("The Foxy Bard" on KZbin), a folksinger who's been inspired by my parents and Bikel and has covered some of Bikel's Yiddish and Russian songs. Thank you so much for this song, which I hadn't heard before. It's beautiful.

Theodore Bikel----what an actor/musician !!! From Germany-----was a linguist capable of many languages and many dialects. And ... He really was a folk singer/collector of folk songs. Teddy Eccles was a competent Canadian actor who never made it big, but had a good on-screen presence, and did very well in everything I've seen him in This movie is one of my favorites. I actually remember watching it ONCE when I was a kid----Never forgot it. Love this song. It was "just something (he) threw together for the movie ". Well , it's still sticking together. I remember this movie as a kid in the 70's and I was surprised to find it on DVD at Walmart a couple years ago. I only wish there were deleted scenes but it's just the movie and in the children's section. I am curious. Do you use a thumb pick when strumming songs like this or just the thumb? I use my thumb and 3 fingers (index, middle and ring), but I've been using my thumb, index and middle and not my ring finger lately, probably a bad habit. I never really got the hang of strumming, strangely it's more difficult for me lol! I think it's because I suck at keeping rhythm. But then I also play by ear, as I never learned to read notes very well :( Bikel is a genius, and I think deserved far more attention. It takes forever just to scroll down through his IMDB list!

I never use my ring finger and even the middle isn't utilized as much as it should be so I have many bad guitar habits as well. I am good with keeping rhythm but suck at leads. When I started playing I learned old Dylan songs with online tabs. One that is good for finger picking practice is 'Girl from the North Country'. Not extremely difficult but very impressive. You should also check out some of his songs from 'Blood on the tracks' that are in alternate tuning and also finger picked.

SEE MY OTHER HAPPY APPRECIATIVE COMMENTS & RELEVANT INTERESTING DESCRIPTIVE ENTRY ARTICLES FROM "WIKIPEDIA" CITATIONS / REFERRALS ON ANOTHER "KZbin" THREAD WITH WILFRED JOSEPH'S MUSICAL THEME SONG FOR THIS 1969 FILM "MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN" STARRING TEDDY ECCLES & THEODORE BIKEL. BASED ON ORIGINAL 1961 NOVEL BY JEAN CRAIGHEAD GEORGE (ORIGINALLY SET IN UPSTATE NEW YORK IN CATSKILLS / ADIRONDACK MOUNTAINS WITH SAM GRIBLEY). THIS FILM GREATLY AFFECTED ME WHEN I FIRST SAW IT IN SUMMER 1969 WHEN I WAS A PRECOCIOUS GENIUS IMPRESSIONABLE AGE 16. NEVER FORGOT IT OR ITS THEME MUSIC FOR A HALF-CENTURY EVER SINCE!!! = D.E.T.
