The galapolli campaign was ww1 agaist the ottomans. The plan was to take dardelles and then move on to the bosphorus, then supply russia. Many of the troops was aussies and kiwis. The campaign failed, badly. The brits barely took any land and the losses were high on both sides. Eventually it was abandoned with no gain.
@ert315 жыл бұрын
As a Turk i can actually say where they landed actually made more sense because these lands could be taken more easly than other places. (Turkish side fortified these lands and supplied with machine guns.) From any sides that campain went very bad for brits and even for the turks. We took same losses as defenders because of the numbers and technological advantages of entente side. In ww1 times Ottomans didn't have any factories for ammunation or guns and that was the biggest issue that the ottomans have. Brits thoughd they were an easy opponent after their humiliating defeat in the first balkan war (1912). After that war there is a new era for Ottomans and it starts with "Young Turk rebellion". It's the army who revolted against the Sultan and took the control. Enver Pasha was the main leader and he is the one who lead the empire in ww1. What brits faced was not the same army who they saw at first balkan war it was a brand new army in german stlye. (The German influance of Ottoman Empire is an other title but it was very effected the empire)

Honestly, people exaggerate the effect of Pearl Harbour. Whilst PH was very important for the development of the war in the Pacific, when it came to Europe, PH didn't actually change much. The Battle of Britain had already been won, the Enigma Codes were already well on their way to being cracked. The US were already providing supplies, but many of them got redirected towards American troops going to the pacific; American trucks were supposed to go to Russia to help them fight off Operation Barbarossa, but they got given to the US Military instead to train and supply the recruits, making the Russian theatre that much weaker. Honestly, whilst PH and direct American intervention did speed up the war by a year or so, I reckon, the bigger factors were simply: 1) Hitler was arrogant and got personally involved in a lot of the military decisions when he had no idea what he was doing, so instead of doing something sensible like mass producing the reliable Panzer he instead spent WAY too much money on trying to find a "Supertank." That's a big part of why the US were able to outproduce the Third Reich; Germany and its holdings had the industry, Hitler just pissed away their money. This is on top of him making stupid military decisions and fucking with his best commanders (EG, Rommel). 2) The Third Reich expanded too quickly. They had the industry available, but the German economy itself was too fragile to properly support such a large empire. Instead of consolidating his power, he kept trying to expand and pushed his existing infrastructure to breaking point. The German Economy wouldn't have lasted much longer than it did in any case. 3) The big one? Operation Barbarossa. His failed invasion of Russia fucked Hitler over MUCH more than The USA's supply of troops did. Pearl Harbour was important, certainly, but from a historical perspective I always roll my eyes when Americans say that they swooped in and rescued everybody from the Nazi's. Hitler was going to lose eventually; his economy wasn't strong enough and he wasn't clever enough to keep the momentum going, especially after he lost the Battle of Britain and tried to invade Russia, which had nothing to do with the USA getting involved. The USA helped, definitely, but saying that they came in and saved everybody from certain defeat is a *massive* exaggeration. The USA sped the war up, definitely, but Nazi Germany was going to crumble very soon either way.

Fair to say Hitler would have failed, however, had Japan controlled Southeast Asia as was the plan; that war would've easily carried on a lot longer than it did. ..so to that extent, proclaiming everything would've ended is as ignorant as proclaiming Hitler only failed cause of America. Either way, had PH not happened, Japan's plans for SE Asia would've seen them involved regardless but we can only speculate whether or not the Bombs would've happened. BUT! After WW1 leading into WW2 the US would've easily been very conflicted entering that war if not for PH and thus what happened, happened with solidarity. March 10, 1941 - America starts lending aid though chooses to remain out of the war itself. Hitler invades SU 3/4 months after the fact sucks it took months after that for the supplies to get there but you covered this. Tension was already rising between the US and both Germany and Japan. Pretend for a moment that FDR had been assassinated and not the Mayor, Garner would be president. With that as a "fact", Garner would have kept his (US) interests at home, not abroad. That assumed... North Africa, 1942, Operation Torch -- this required the US otherwise forces at present would've been lucky to have taken Tunis sometime in 1943. I know N Africa, whatever, right? But because of this move led by the US it gave an opening into Italy and Southern France. Considering the African military at the time, we can say that either 44 or 1945 African forces invade Silicy. This, of course, assuming the Royal Navy had reclaimed the Mediterranean of Axis fleets. While, yes, the Soviets would've devastated German forces, their own casualty rates/damages suffered would still be greater than it was despite US supplies from the Act taking months to officially arrive. The withdrawal enforced by the Soviets on German forces would easily lead to Italian liberation thus the events stated above. Besides dealing with Japan, the biggest portion of American aid was easily the Pacific which Churchill considered a secondary theater. However, if you removed American forces from the Pacific, Japan controls it. Singapore, Burma crumble. Australia would likely fall as Churchill had their soldiers in the Middle East and without America present, would be invaded. With Japan holding more territory/power/might, Germany isn't spread so thin. Who knows how the rest turns out because Japan wasn't there -- America was. Without this, Burma and India out the picture, China would be in deep trouble. But again... American presence quite literally removes Japan from an otherwise unpredictable and unforseen future.
@ninjabreadman1993r4 жыл бұрын
@@NCA_Azzy But the problem is that to achieve those ends, you're introducing a LOT more "what ifs" and "maybes." My point wasn't that America wouldn't have been important in some fictional alternate universe where somebody else was assassinated and all that other stuff. Just that, as the situation stood in the 40's, American intervention in the war wasn't the big war-winning blow that is commonly presented by Americans. Was America important? Yes, undoubtedly. I never said they were. They were as important as every other ally, and they contributed a lot. My point was simply that the war in Europe would have likely ended in German defeat regardless of whether America sent troops or not. As for the Pacific, you're right, Japan would have gotten a lot further in their conquest. But you're forgetting that China is a LOT bigger than Japan conquered, and that after Operation Barbarossa, Russia was already turning it's attention to the Pacific. People think that Japan surrendered because of the atomic bomb; that's not quite true. It was a factor, yes, but the bigger reason was because only a day or so earlier, Russia had declared war on Japan and Japan was like "Um. Well fuck." Even without America, once Germany fell, they'd have Russia, China and The British Empire (such as it was) on their ass. They wouldn't have ended up winning. The war would have been bloody, but it would have ended with a Japanese defeat all the same. As I said originally, America was important to the outcome of the war! I never said they weren't. My point was simply that America wasn't *as* important as Americans sometimes like to pretend. That's all.
@NCA_Azzy4 жыл бұрын
@@ninjabreadman1993r The "what ifs" only existed to make the "America neutrality" stick. Historically, PH or not, they would've been involved. But the "what ifs" are necessary to reach exactly what your hypothetical end game equates too. *If* the Soviets suffer superior losses, do they instantly go after Japan? Probably not. That was the point. *If* American aid and American intervention do not occur when it does, you cannot guarantee and say with 100% certainty everything still plays out exactly the same. Roosevelt's Act still arrives before the Soviets final push. The Germans still get stretched even thinner due to Africa/Italy/Asia and the drastic change in the Pacific. *If* America isn't present to help surge into Siciliy and take over the Pacific, the Germans have no other demanding need to withdraw, cause Japan is present there. Your "if" also cannot predict that China would endure it's pinch and pressure. Your what if, possible or otherwise, has, by default, an extended time-line that could ultimately and drastically change things enough that the Soviets could gave still been forced back. ...your what if revolves around America's non-involvement. My what if revolved around the only true reasoning that America, Pearl Harbor out of the equation, wouldn't have gotten involved. Roosevelt, upon his unprecedented 3rd Term, had an assassination attempt aimed at him but they killed the wrong person. Only way America isn't involved is if Carson took over the presidency. America was literally a lingering threat that gave them pause. It's literally, and moronically, why Japan sought to cripple their Navy. Both sides knew this. Especially Japan who was at ends with America even before WW2 started. The Bombs of Nagasaki and Hiroshima were to force Japan to surrender. They refused until they had assurance of their leader. America and Britain were aware of the Soviet intention to declare war. Soviets invaded Manchuria ( *China* ) to surprise the Japanese, America bombed em. That was all in sync. 1 million Soviets vs 700,000 Japanese. Still begs the question how it unfolds if the Soviets aren't that strong.
@ninjabreadman1993r4 жыл бұрын
@@NCA_Azzy You can dress it up however you want, but your speculation has massive flaws in it, partly down to the fact that you have no way of knowing that your What Ifs would ever come true. For one, a third term is unconstitutional and would never - ever - happen, at least not in that time period. Had Pearl Harbour never happened, or if America had responded to it differently, the war in Europe would likely have ended the same way, albeit a little later. Considering I was talking about the Nazi's and considering that a Japanese invasion of Europe is next to impossible given the state of Japan at the time, that's the only thing that matters for my overall point. It isn't that deep, fam. You're going to extreme lengths to try and...what, prove me wrong? I really don't care about this level of speculation because the more steps you add, the less likely you are to be able to accurately predict anything and I'm just not interested in that kind of historical masturbation. xD

It really shows the difference between opinions depending on what country someone is from. Like how I don't really think that the US joining the war pretty late, while helpful, was completely needed. And then a lot of Americans think that America was the main reason that the allies won the war
@tysej45 жыл бұрын
Mmm I feel the Soviet Union was the primary reason the war was won. Hell they beat the entire allied union by months to the german capital.
@ElPayasoMalo5 жыл бұрын
I mean, even if the USA was not the reason the war was won for the Allies, the USA is certainly the reason the allies won as soon as they did. If the USA had not gotten involved in direct fighting, the war could have lasted another year or two, and that's a lot of extra casualties. At a certain point, Axis defeat was probably inevitable before the USA sent troops over, but if nothing else, the USA added brevity to a conflict that had already overstayed its welcome. I mean, it wasn't like Churchill and Stalin told FDR that they didn't need the help. Churchill tried really hard to get the USA involved.
@Slgjgnz5 жыл бұрын
@@ElPayasoMalo Fair, but you could say that of most Allies, each countries helped reduce the delay and casualties. Not one country is the one saving the other, and even if we ranked their contribution, US would be much farther than most Americans think.
@ElPayasoMalo5 жыл бұрын
@@Slgjgnz But what I'm saying is that most of them were there from the get-go and war-weary. The USA showed up fresh and help wrap it up. It's like having a friend help you build like two thirds of a shed, then a second friend helps the two of you with the rest. You could have done it with just one friend, but the second friend really helped save even more time. I feel like USA citizens overestimate the contributions of the USA, but at the same time, everyone else underestimates it BECAUSE the USA overestimates it. The USA did pull most of the weight in the Pacific Theater. But this is the big one for the USA. This is the one conflict that we can all agree was justified on the part of the USA. (Until recently,) pretty much all US citizens agreed that Nazis were evil and needed to be put down. The Second World War is held in reverence unlike any armed conflict in the USA.

After Teddy died, they said death had to come for him in his sleep, otherwise there would have been a fight.

Playing base is IMO not an insult & off all Rushmore presidents the set-up is pretty good. Washington on the front lines rocking the guitar, Lincoln the great speaker on the vocals, badass Roosevelt the base. That leaves Thomas Jefferson on the percussion (can't find good comparison).

Churchill was NOT in any way shape or form personally to blame for what happened in Gallipoli! It was bad execution on the battlefield _by the commanders there,_ hampered by badly synchronized clocks. The bombardment meant to suppress the enemy ended early, but the British commander held his troops in the trenches until _his_ watch read the correct time (just in case the bombardment restarted). That gave the enemy time to recover and re-establish their machine guns. Faulting Churchill for it was a diss based on falsehood, and giving Teddy so much credit for it is just wrong. Not that he really needed it, the rest of his bars were still stronger, but that one (as a veteran) irks me.

Technically under Churchill the British Empire was the largest on earth encompassing 1/4 of the world

That wasn't Churchill's doing tho, that was due to centuries of British colonization and imperialism.

That isn’t Churchill’s empire .. he was the Prime Minister of Britain . Every British colony had its own Prime Minister .. he only had control of basically the UK.

Don't let yourself believe the misconception about WW2. While it would have meant more lives lost, but the fact is the German forces had been spread too thinly to hold out for much longer. Everyone involved in that war got battered quite badly.

This is the only one I'll call a tie. The very last line of Churchill saved him from the loss. He never surrenders, so he can't really loose. I think my logic is sound on this one.

To me, this particular ERB is a draw, though if I had to pick a winner, it would be Roosevelt. Churchill's line about Roosevelt playing bass in a band called Rushmore is a bit ironic, and probably would result in minus a point or two. Why? Bass players don't get much recognition, but the band the pun is based on (Canadian power trio Rush) has a bass player in Geddy Lee who's widely regarded as one of the best bass players EVER, if not THE best ever. So essentially, Churchill is trying to say Roosevelt is garbage, but uses a band who's bass player is actually REALLY good to throw that barb.

I think Roosevelt was better this time, however, as to the history, Britain, at least, fought from the very beginning of the WWII. Of course, it did not help Eastern Europe much, and neither did the Lend-lease that compensated food, metals and machinery Stalin had sent to Germany before 1941 (and did not compensate lives of Soviet citizens shot for objecting to friendship with Nazi Germany). Don't know whether Britain and US knew e.g. that Stalin had sent to hard labor (lethal fot many) huge numbers of jews or that he deported entire nations, not to say about large groups of people of other ethnicities, the Great Purge before the WWII, well, it was great. Though, apparently historians do not care: after all Stalin shot and deported his own citizens, or, well, officers of the Poland occupied by him together with Hitler were not his own, but who cares....
