I haven't done the course yet but I think this is one of the big things they look for--to always make sure you explain a word in terms of simpler words! Even "candle" is probably a bit suspect. Wouldn't most books have a picture?

well, teachers would've spent a lifetime spelling out terms like candle, thunder, storm and sticks before they could present what a 'match' is, or could've put it more simply by showing a picture of the object it while looking at the actual spelling and repeating it aloud.
@jazzyk40465 жыл бұрын
Hm.. Maybe the point is to not just "give". Because if you do that, they'll just resort to memorisation. Memorisation doesn't stick to the brains in the long run. Maybe the point is to set a story to the word match so that students will remember it easier and better and thus it will stick in the head longer, if not forever.

The vocab he is using in the video is directed to teachers, he will use simple questions to elicit answers from students, one of the criteria for concept checking question that they include easier vocab than the actual word being taught

that doesnt work when teaching english to greek children for example. if they could understand this whole story with ease then mere "matches" would be piece of cake for them. so i guess these techniques are only for native english children.
@danielinnk835 жыл бұрын
I agree. The definition is more complicated than the word. The word's meaning can be clarified with a picture.then demonstrated in sentences and then go on to the form

You should remove this video Theo. Your example to set context is a really good example of what we should not do. You've used higher level language than the target language. This is a big no no, and for obvious reasons. Also, your context is not clear, it meanders around country lanes for half an hour before you arrive at the destination, which was only 3 houses down the road to begin with. Clearly, you understand the concept but it's your lack of experience that shines through. It's a normal kind of mistake and your tutors should have clarified the problem with you.
@mariaivantsova5329 жыл бұрын
I agree. The examples given are unfortunately impossible to apply. The language we use is to be graded for sure and it's easier to mime some things rather than explain it painstakingly. Still, well done,Theo! Now you can remember what you've been taught during the course. Good .

This video illustrates many of the problems with a course like CELTA. We're being asked to assume that your hypothetical students will understand 'Imagine' 'thunder' 'lighting' 'ectricity' and 'candle' but not the word 'match.' Why not just translate it? Or show them a box of matches? As for the concept-checking questions, shouldn't they have been banished to a particularly dark corner of hell by now? 'Is a match big?" Please...

No offence to you at all but in my opinion phonetic is really shitty. I learnt English from A1 level to C1 level and I never used it. It is useless. The best is to learn pronunciation using your hears, repeating after the teacher, watching videos, listening to music and so on… Moreover, it is much funnier. However, I really appreciated your video, your explanations were great.

I disagree that we should not first show the word on the board or screen before teaching the pronunciation. Showing the word first helps students grasp the proper pronunciation. To say the reverse technique -- speaking the word before showing the word -- is more akin to how we learn words as children, is somewhat specious. That is, sure we learned a lot of words as children before we saw the word spelled out, but many words we have learned were presented in written form first throughout our lives. To attempt to mimic the process of a native speaker, in which language is acquired naturally when we are children, has limited value, since our TEFL students are not native English speakers, and therefore won't respond in the same communicative-need dynamic which framed our early language learning experiences. I say, show the word before you ask them so speak it, as listening is not as accurate a tool as reading, in terms of grasping new vocabulary. Accents play into this too, as British and American dialects present different phonic outcomes from the same spelling. Further, I doubt that any student was impeded in their vocabulary acquisition because the word was shown prior to spoken.

Do CCQs imply you already provided an explanation of the concept to be checked? I mean, for example, if I were to teach present perfect tense, do CCQs come after or before I've explained it? I'm kind of confused here cause I just started working in a place and I'm being taught that I have to get my students to reach the concept by using CCQs, but to me it seems like for that goal to be reached I'd have to explain "present perfect" and then I could proceed with some CCQs. Am I getting it all wrong? Can anyone give me some piece of advice please, it would be much appreciated. Thank you! :)

Hi Theo. I loved your videos, I truly appreciate your efforts on youtube. You have helped me so much on my own CELTA journey. I was wondering if you have a few moments to help me decide what are the 'names of the structures' of [he must understand Spanish] and [workers must obtain permission]. I would say they are both called 'present simple modal'. Is that correct? Your sincerely. Julie
