I've heard that perfection is the enemy of the good. As a writer I try too hard to be perfect; failing is the real teacher, not perfection. I'm never going to get a story right, right out of the box. Every story needs editing, I'll always have an "aha!" moment the day after writing a scene. It's okay to just be good; what's more important is the audience like my work.

He's done 129 films: To live and die in LA, Platoon, Boondock Saints, Last temptation of Christ, Mississippi burning, Born on the fourth of July, Shadow of the vampire, My Hindu friend, Florida project, The Lighthouse, Motherless Brooklyn just to mention a few. I LOVE his work! So extremely gifted, talented and versatile. Why has this man not won an Oscar!? Looking forward to seeing the films to come. 💖

@@woodsmanagement6298 In other words, you’re unlikely to succeed if you don’t take a chance. If you hide under the covers; never leave the comfort of your home; never take a risk of going out into the world, you risk letting life pass you by.

@@woodsmanagement6298 I think he meant if it's not risky, then you aren't pushing yourself creatively. Which for an artist is death. And that is the ultimate risk for an artist.

I've re-watched this clip far too many times - I say that as if too much of a good thing can eventually become bad... which tends to be true, but certainly not in this case. These words of genuine, heartfelt wisdom that actively help me overcome my very specific struggles, guide me down the right track every time I hear them. I tend to re-watch this clip whenever I'm feeling particularly beaten down despite wanting to continue... and wonderful people who actually understand the depth of their artistry, such as Willem Dafoe or Philip Seymour Hoffman, always guide me down the right track to continue nevertheless. I'm truly thankful for this, and of course them.

Maybe he never auditioned for it, maybe he wouldn’t want to accept the role. You make all actors sound like slaves with your line... Williem Defoe is big enough to have some choice in his career. You should research some of the roles that some actors have turned down even when they know it would give them a lot of money and attention.

Some directors will only do take. Whether that’s just because of the directors way of doing things or because of budget / time / scheduling reasons it’s very common for directors to do only one or two takes. Maybe less so in Hollywood, I don’t know. But TV shows have an even tighter schedule with many scenes and shots to pack into just one day and they often can’t go over time for the allocated shooting weeks for the tv season or movie. And things like losing daylight is a common problem too.
