This interview struck a huge chord with me. My husband was severely gang beaten when he was 17 by three older men, and kind of the same thing: no real rhyme or reason... just because he was there. They broke most of his teeth, smashed his nose, and busted up his ribs. My husband is a very kind, sensitive man who grew up in Northern Ireland amongst sectarian conflict, but has often said that that moment in his life was when he truly rejected all sense of violence. I got chills watching this....

I always got really depresses Hering from gang beatings because I was witness to one as a young girl and also heard of a few more that traumatized me just from hearing. I remember thinking that if someone had the unluck of being the victim of such crime how could one recover? That was what depressed me. But reading "The Alquimist" by Paulo Coelho where that same thing happens to the hero, I understood that the ones who beat are the ones that are usually beyond salvation. What rules them is other things different from what rules a normal balanced kind person. Their heart are in a wrong place and that's what is really sad. Now I'm no longer a young girl and I know people can overcome huge trauma, not only that but some people even become grateful, how crazy. But the people who beat, who made the deal with worse in the world, they have a bigger path to walk, a longer one. In the book JOY, Dalai Lama tells a story of a friend he loves very much. This friend was a slave in those Chinese work camps. Beatings, hunger, mistreatment. Dalai Lama asking him what was the worse. He told the Dalai Lama "sometimes it was very hard you know, sometimes between the beatings and the hunger, one day I almost didn't felt sorry for them". I wish you and your husband and anyone who reads this and needs it a wonderful filled with love and Joy life. ❤️

Well it was his job at the time to fully understand the character and the story. And even if he hadn’t, such a wildly successful movie affords actors lots of opportunities to hear a ton of opinions and thoughts on the story. Also I’m sure he’s talked to Cormac McCarthy who wrote the book and the Coens I’m sure gave him a pretty good insight into his character. Also he’s clearly a brilliant guy with genuine love for art.

I hope the guys who beat up Javier as kid see Country for Old Men. They watch saying Oh shit! These guys that hurt him did this from their failures. Its not just men that are violent. the amount of times I have seen women fighting with eachother, or with their boyfriends is insane, Hell I had to break up a fight when a girl beat her boyfriend so bad his eye was destroyed. An ex of mine sliced my throat on my birthday in 2010. It p!sses me off this old stereotype that men hold the monopoly on violence.
