This is one of those Prince imitating groups from back in the '80s. The ad libs in the background with the lead singer repeating the previous sung phrase or answering himself is very, very Prince-like, as well as the funkiness of the track.

RFTW! Nearly this entire album has a VERY heavy Prince influence. (I still think he ghost-wrote material for this album and their follow up release.) I played the heck out this album back in the day. 🎶😌🎶 The album had a couple of romantic songs including this one (“Let me love you down” was the other slow jam) that were popular on Black radio in the mid 80s, plus 2 or 3 more up-tempo songs that got a good amount of airplay on Pop radio stations. Most notably, “Oh, Sheila” was RFTW’s one big mainstream hit. When it was gaining popularity on the radio, everybody assumed Prince had something to do with it because it sounded so unmistakably like his unique style of music. RFTW dispelled the rumors in a BET interview saying the song had not been written by Prince, they were just very inspired by him and The Time (an 80s R&B/funk band that Prince was doing some ghostwriting for) . What was curious was that when RFTW’s debut album came out around 1985, Prince had already started collaborating with female percussionist extraordinaire, Sheila E., about a year prior, fueling the rumors the track had been penned by the Purple Rain megastar about his new, exotic-looking muse. (Prince was also writing some material for Sheila. E.’s first 3 albums in the mid to late 80s. He wrote the music for her big hit “The Glamorous Life” which you must do a reaction to. Banger!) I love the second album too. The third album contains a couple of classics, including “Gently”.

No ma'am 😂😂😂The face you made at the "wet" part. I actually hollered 🤣🤣 You should react to "Gently" by them. RFTW was the ish back in the day ❤
@leeharrison8222Күн бұрын
I live “Gently.” Like to listen to this song, had like a palpable emotional gravitas to the music. Weirdly, kind of sad sounding, but still a beautiful ballad with the lyrics. Very much and the prince style of songwriting, where he could write lyrics with such a different emotional tone from the music.

Melvin Riley is the original freak of the 80s, with his pen game. When this came out in 1985, a lot of people thought Prince & the Minneapolis sound had someone to do with this ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!! This is all Melvin Riley
