This came out in 1987. Eminem’s Slim Shady LP was released early 1999 and was written/recorded 1996-1998. Eminem was 26 when that dropped. LL was 19 when this dropped. LL blew up much younger even though he’s only 4 years older. Completely different generations. Also, crack started becoming available in the early 80’s and caught fire around 1985 and peaked from about 87-92. This came out in 1987. They didn’t have to witness the full impact of the crack epidemic to be cool and state not to do drugs in their music. Their generation’s OGs took care of their youth more than the newer generation does.

This song is from 1987 and by the early 90s LL was really popular. LL was one of the artists that built Def Jam and took hip hop mainstream, and one of the Beastie Boys was actually responsible for getting him signed. When you guys are ranking and comparing rappers from different generations also remember the times they were living in(no social media influence, videos were new for some of them) and the areas they were coming from(every hood is different, every borough in NYC had their own slang and way of dress)....Run DMC(and a lot of the early guys) came from doing Block Parties, just having fun and getting a live crowd hype, then they started making records...the guys slightly after them still did live shows, but more paid shows, more studio work, with more intricate pen skills....for example, you go from Big Daddy Kane to KRS One and Rakim to Nas...it's more of an evolution than a comparison.

Speaking about Run DMC...you can't compare them to hard core rappers....they literally bridged a gap in music. I mean, Aerosmith and Run DMC,... 'Walk This Way'!!!! Literal game changer in music, imo

What struck me the first time I heard this, as dated as it feels, the CONFIDENCE in his voice makes you rock with it no matter what he’s saying. Dude had all kind of swag

i can't believe they've never heard this. i am so glad that i shared all of these songs with the younger generation in our family, i ESPECIALLY SHARED #LLCOOLJ 's music. LL Cool J literally BUILT the record label he came in under. You guys should know what contributions all of the pioneers gave to the music industry.

Canibus was around when Eminem was about. Both battle rappers and Em wanted none of it, until Canibus' career veered off. Check out his freestyles with DJ Clue. Check out 5,4,3,2,1 with LL and Canibus on the same track

The best thing about old school rappers is that no two sounded the same. The were all unique and brought something different to the table. Nowadays all that mess sounds the same except for maybe J Cole and Kendrick. I’m old school so I haven’t kept up with too many other rappers since.

I’m not trying to be funny, but you have a lot of catching up to do on the history of hip-hop. But you guys do a good job of reacting to these old school videos. Keep up the good work!!!!

I agree with you. I believe that their hearts are in the right place, and I'll give them some level of respect for even listening to Hip Hop two or three generations before their time. They called Run DMC "corny." They're entitled to their opinion, but Run DMC was far from corny -- they were very pivotal in bringing Hip Hop to the mainstream, and they were very talented.

Our Artists leaped decades. Back in the day, our STARS were rocking the charts for LONG PERIODS OF TIMES. It's not like it is today. We were able to see many of our Artists grow, change and outlast the test of times. We 80s kids were kids when LL Cool J was rocking the charts.

If you guys want to know who Eminem admired and got his flow from then you need to check out Trech from the group Naughty by Nature. I recommend you react to the song and video "Everything is going to be all right".

No respect for their bars the way you talk over every verse SMH I eliminate punks, cut 'em up in chunks You're a suit you heard me, and your ego shrunk I'm devastating, I'm so good it's a shame 'Cause I eat rappers like a cannibal, they call me insane I'm as strong as a bull, of course you know I have pull I enjoy what I'm doin', plus I'm paid in full Not Buckaroo Bonsai but bust it out as I Say the kind of rhymes that make MC's wish that I died Never retire or put my mic on the shelf The baddest rapper in the history of rap itself Not bitter or mad, just provin' I'm bad You want a hit? Give me a hour, plus a pen and a pad
