When I was a kid, I peeled the label off of a bottle of Sprite I was drinking, because it has a contest that you could win a free cd if you had the winning label. LYRICS (YEAR 1993): You could say I lost my faith in science and progress You could say I lost my belief in the holy Church You could say I lost my sense of direction You could say all of this and worse, but If I ever lose my faith in you There'd be nothing left for me to do Some would say I was a lost man in a lost world You could say I lost my faith in the people on TV You could say I'd lost my belief in our politicians They all seemed like game show hosts to me If I ever lose my faith in you There'd be nothing left for me to do I could be lost inside their lies without a trace But every time I close my eyes I see your face I never saw no miracle of science That didn't go from a blessing to a curse I never saw no military solution That didn't always end up as something worse, but Let me say this first If I ever lose my faith in you There'd be nothing left for me to do

Only God matters--that already sounds like a cult message. "He is the only one who truly loves you." Yes, definitely a cult message. You need to work on it, this sounds really creepy and it's so misplaced given the nature of THIS song. Tone deaf and lame. Brutal.
@JM-db8ez11 ай бұрын
@@cmlady0437 LOL If only you knew what the song was really about instead of just hearing the word Faith and thinking it's religiously oriented. No, the song even talks about losing faith in religion because of all the hypocrisy and nonsense. You're ascribing meaning to a song that is opposite to its intention. The real connections are with real people, not fairy tales. Touch grass, get back to the earth, live in our reality, not in spite of it.
@cmlady043711 ай бұрын
@@JM-db8ez I get what you mean... Even so, it's not being delusional; but rather focused. For Example: Artist Name - Musiq Soulchild Song Name - Love Although the Lyrics speak of the music artist experience on Love through the ups & Downs of life.... Some may relate to the song regarding someone special in their life that showed them Love and yet the song always reminds me of God's Love. Call me delusional or a fanatic, but God is Love... and I get to see His Love in those around me and some people that cross my path in Life. It's not cultish when you choose to walk in Love... and believe God in everything I do and say according to His word & Will for my life. 🙏🏾

You've totally missed the meaning of the song due to your religious hysteria (sorry, vehement Atheist). The line, "you could say I lost my belief in the holy church." He professes that he has lost his faith in everything, including god. So, if he loses his faith in his love, he has nothing left to lose, because that's the ONLY thing he still believes in. It's a love song and religious faith is used to conjure "blind faith" in this instance, not for god, but for his love.

"The song is in two distinct parts. The first part is about the things I've lost faith in. It's quite easy to be precise about the things I've lost faith in - politics, media, science, technology, the things that everybody has, and yet I along with most other people have a great deal of hope, and a feeling that things will and can get better. So what do we place our faith in I can't define that as easily as I can define what I don't believe in anymore. So I haven't defined it, I've just said if I ever lose my faith in you, and "You" could be my producer, it could be faith in God, it could be faith in myself, or it could be faith in romantic love. It could be all of those things, I don't define it. I think it's important not to define it, because once you can define something it evaporates. I think it's important in this day and age when we are dictated to by music television what a particular song is about, that the old ambiguity that songs had can be retained." Sting was a schoolteacher for three years. During this time, he played in bands nights and weekends. His real name is Gordon Sumner. Concurring anecdotes have it that he got his stage name from a yellow-and-black-striped sweater he wore while playing jazz gigs during his early days in Cramlington, England, which made him look like a bumble bee. One bandleader started calling him "Sting" and it stuck. Sting has six children: two with his first wife, Frances Tomelty, four with his next wife, Trudie Styler.

Yeah, I've read this interview quote before. The statement that stands out to me is this: "Once you can define something, it evaporates." Um, what? I think Sting knows exactly what he meant by "you" and doesn't want to reveal it because it will alienate those who interpret the song differently.

Sting is warning, for what we are trusting now, it is realy or a fantansy: we need to query our selfs about that; one thing that we can trust for sure, it is to be certain, which we can trust in GOD; any men or women can fail, but Him does not fail: this is true!

A couple of months ago, I use to like only The Police's songs, and I hadn't given to myself the chance of listening to Sting's ones as a solo artist. However, in a sunny Sunday afternoon, l listen to this song on the radio while driving, and it caught me since the first seconds. The mix of the arrangements and the lyrics was so beautiful that even made me cry. Then, I began listening to Sting's solo songs, and I recently had the chance to see him playing on live in my own country, Mexico 😆. Sting hadn't come to Mexico in several years, so I was present in a unique venue. I'm amazed to get caught by Sting's solo songs just before he came back to Mexico. I think it's not simple coincidence.

Hard to believe this masterpiece never went to #1 on either the Pop (Top 40) or Adult Contemporary charts. March-April 1993. Best it ever did was #5 on both charts. If it were released today (2021), I don't think it would get any radio airplay at all. That's how much music has changed in 28 years.

I think these poetic lyrics describe how trust is the most is the most important thing in a relationship and if that's gone, the relationship is over. I especially love the line "every time I close my eyes I see your face" as it describes how you feel someone you love in "inside" your soul. Musically it's too. It's a magical song.

Conscious or otherwise, Sting delivered a message that goes straight to the buried foundation of all religions and is absolutely timeless. We are nothing without each other and only if we regain our faith in each other we will show the miracle that we are. Yep, this song takes the negative route, talking about how messed up we currently act. I would consider that a "rock bottom" type of scenario, but then...the pit may well go deeper than that, haha. Anyway, the brilliant thing about this song is that it speaks to everyone, if one was listening, no matter what you believe or not. I think, it's quite genius! 8}
@Taronites9 жыл бұрын
+Agnes Philomena eh....while I agree with the observation that it was somewhat adolescent- or rather naive- to complain against the current system in his way, the idea within his lyrics is strong and relevant and entirely transcends atheism or any deformation coming from systemized belief. Whether I understand his message based on my own train of thought or for what it truly means, I enjoy the impression that there are more people, who recognize that we should have faith in each other before we separate and worship any other concept. You might want to consider departing from the standards you borrow. I'd like to have faith in you! ;o)
@Taronites9 жыл бұрын
I forgot to mention that I'm by no means atheistic, but rather believe to recognize what's really meant when scriptures refer to god or gods. I've only read the Torah, the Bhagavad-Gita, the old (shuffled Torah)- and new testament, various kabbalistic scriptures and some modern takes on philosophy and alchemy, not to pick and choose some dogma, but to examine what we might have already understood. I very much exclusively care about understanding, not compromised alignments with some formulated belief. At the end we merely seek orientation to gain strength and clarity in our decision making. Too many people choose to take the backseat and ride with the most comforting or agreeable "instructions", rather than to develop true understanding themselves with an awake consciousness and mind. That is what leads to blindness, regardless how sophisticated the sources they refer to!
@Taronites9 жыл бұрын
+Agnes Philomena Dear Agnes, appropriate or not, I'd really like to hug you now! 8) One of the most important messages in the very core of Christianity is that of forgiveness. When we see so many people powerlessly submitting to the corruption and extortion in the very design of our leading systems, they are not defying what is asked of them. They are trying to do the best they can based on what they're being taught and actually even being forced to adhere to. Life is being made confusing and complicated in order to push dependency onto almost every aspect of it. Dependency to worldly powers, that is, creating the overwhelming impression that nothing else matters. Within each of us is the desire to function, because we know that our value can only fully get expressed by our actions, regardless how strong and high this value is present inside of us from the very beginning. But our actions are being hijacked and misdirected by artificial conditions and conditioning. Thus, most of us don't ever get to really contribute our true skills, true talents to the rest of us, to the world, not even to the neighborhood. Most of us don't quite know that either. Deprived of faith in our own intuition, we seek guidance by that which has power over us and we ask for counselling from the very source that shreds away our given path. As a result, people externalize responsibility, they no longer feel like it was on them to be careful or conscious with others or even themselves. Only these small windows remain in which they have to find their righteousness, justify their actions to themselves, and we have to feel that way. So the standards of acceptance for the most miserable actions drop towards rock bottom, because we have to give ourselves some kind of "ok" in order to carry on in this bewildering civilization. But a little part of the truth is that we are and will always be fully in charge of our own actions. We just have to grab hold of our decision making again. One "trick" to get there is to separate between "the player" we are in the "game of society" and the actual being that we are beyond it. What we can learn from this perspective will ultimately improve our ability to participate in that "game" as well, because beneath it all remains a universal logic that applies to even the wildest distortions. I believe there is not one religion that doesn't try to teach us that everything is divine, because everything is part of that "great becoming", which we call by so many names. That doesn't protect everything from making "mistakes", but it almost guarantees that every part of it that is being given the proper responsibility will eventually solve those kinks and recognize which way to grow. We as humanity are that leading part to that which matters to us as a whole. I know there will remain a great deal of pain and foolishness until we recognize the gift each one of us is given and until we act accordingly. But it will happen, because it naturally has to. It does, however, take some waking up to the self and the greater self (as in all of us and more) to begin understanding that our proper actions are in our true will- not that distorted desire based on fears of various kinds, but the will that makes us function usefully with that which brings us truly "productive" joy. (oops, that's a big comment...) Anyway, I'm happy you've reacted the way you did, Agnes, and I couldn't have any greater faith in you now, if you allow me to say that. Just in case that comes across funny or delusional, I do not have to be any kind of special authority to matter as one that feels this way about and for you. I'm a human, that is one massive authority right then and there! 8)
