I just got this one about 10 days ago, a red one with a soft fine nib. All the things that made me hesitate on getting it are no longer concerns. I’m using a cartridge I can refill for more ink capacity. It’s nicely lightweight, comfy to hold, so perfect for work and writing or drawing for long periods. I like longer nibs, and even though it’s smaller than the #15 nib I prefer, it’s still long enough. And, like most Pilot nibs, it writes beautifully every time.

Hey Mick! Like you,I finally pulled the proverbial trigger on a Pilot Falcon;but,I ordered the featherweight "resin" or just plain Falcon model with Soft Medium nib. From Goulet it was $180. They sell the metal one, like yours for $240 as memory serves. I love the Pilot Medium gold nibs on 823,E95S,and Capless. Now my 823 is in the shop for repairs; so,hopefully,my Falcon should be delivered tomorrow. Not sure how long the repairs will take. The Falcon will have to take up the slack. Thank you for the review!

Very nice review, this pen is one that I am considering getting soon. I like how you emphasized not to press down hard on the nib, good advice.

Congratulation! You've got my favorite pen! Literally. I've got a Metal Falcon, black, SF, CON-70. Agree with your every word about this pen. And the best ink in the world! Keep in mind if you regularly use the pen, in a year or less the nib would kind of break in and become softer but springier, more flexy, if I may say. But don't force it, it'll come.

Thanks for this review !! I bought mine almost a year ago with a soft-medium nib and have yet to take it out of the box and use it. This weekend for sure !!

Is yours the metal version? I think I would like a soft/medium nib. Please comment on your experience with this pen. The nib is so interesting.

I have been seriously considering buying this pen recently for drawing and everyday writing purposes, and would prefer the metal over the resin because of the larger converter!! Cant wait to watch this and see how you like it 😁

The Con-70 monster converter holds 0.1ml more ink than the cartridge. That's not much; but, many people seem to prefer converters. There is something to be said for more traditional nib immersion.

@@McAmeron089III you’re right! Also the ability to use any ink color you want, yet flushing the cartridge and just refilling that seems to be just as time consuming as if I flushed the converter to change inks. But if I don’t have a syringe handy the convertor is definitely a plus!

Thank you, Mick. I have seen this pen sold with a con-40 converter and have heard numerous sellers, reviewers say that it doesn't take a con-70 except in the metal version. Then, there is your pen, interesting.

It's clearly a Pilot Falcon Metal. CON-70 converter and "Pilot" logo above the cap ring leave no doubt. It also explains its higher price to some extent.

Aloha Mick! A well done review as always. I just found a used one and am looking forward to getting it in a few days. BTW, am I correct that the version you have is the metal one, not the resin? I think the metal version does accept the Con-70, but not the resin version? Mahalo, Thomas

Are you getting a Metal Falcon or Resin model? Not sure which I would prefer but ,not being able to try both out,I'm leaning toward the resin Falcon. I found a Resin Falcon for sale with a Soft Medium nib. I am tempted. I have been interested in the Pilot Falcon. I feel it is worth $200;can see myself justifying the purchase at some point. It's all about the nib,for me. Do wish the diameter of the section was a bit larger. The price differences between countries is an enigma to me. Pilot gold-nibbed pens are a bargain in the States, imho. Australian prices for the same pen sound cruel and unusual to my untrained ear. I have abandoned all Pilot converters for the durable, easy to clean, refillable Pilot cartridges. Currently have a Pilot 823 in the shop for a reason I beleive is directly related to the vacuum filling system,I'm appreciative of a simple filling method.

@@McAmeron089III Aloha Mike! Bought a used Pilot Falcon (SF) in resin with rhodium trim. Hopefully it will get here this weekend? While I prefer a bigger and heavier pen, I am okay with my Sailor PGS and 1911S, so this Pilot resin pen should be okay. I too prefer a girthier grip section, so we shall see. Don't even know how the metal and resion Falcon differ in weight? I also have a Pilot 742? with an FA nib, so I am more curious how that nib compares to the SF. I also own a Platinum 3776 with a SF that is super fine for my taste. I agree with you on Pilot cartridges being one of the best cartridges and that is probably what I will use with the Falcon as it comes with the Con-40! Yes, I have the Pilot 823 on my wish list, but really don't need the capacity or the feature of the shut off valve, so maybe a C/C comparable Pilot would be a better choice? Also can't decide between the fine or medium nib. Mahalo for taking the time to reply to my comment and your thoughts.

@@kauaiphotography Aloha!, thank you for your informative reply. You have serious nibbage experience. A little yellow bird told me that the Pilot Custom 743 will be available in US in January. That's the sister pen to the 823 and uses cartridge converter instead of vacuum filling;same #15 nib. I have used two 823s,a medium and a fine for a few years;I think I might prefer the cartridge/converter model. One of my 823s is in Pilot USA Hospital as part of the feed was aspirated into the ink-chamber while cleaning. It has my favorite nib . That's why I am going to try a Soft Medium nib Falcon (resin). Metal Falcon: Body=19grams Cap=14grams 33gram total Falcon: Body=10grams Cap=9grams 19grams total Significant weight difference.

@@McAmeron089III Thanks Mike for the "insider" news about the 743 being available through Pilot USA. I would guess the price difference won't be much, if any, since it's in the same XX3 line? Do you find your 823 nibs write about the same line width as Pilot VP's? My VP nibs, between fine and medium, has quite a bit of a difference in line width. I think I prefer something right in between, so a FM would be my ideal!? Not sure if fully understand the problem you have with your 823, but I have heard of a few others with different issues, including cracking by the vacuum nob. Does Pilot USA offer warranty beyond the first year? Thanks for sharing the weight specs for both the metal and resin Falcon. That is why I was inquiring with Mick if he did indeed have the metal version, which would possibly affect the balance of the pen in hand - with or without the cap being posted. Mahalo!

@@kauaiphotography Aloha. I can only compare the #15 nib of the 823 to my VP. The VP has an appreciably finer line than the 823. The VP nib is such a different design altogether,it's hard to compare them. My VP nib seems bouncier than the 823. Your friendly, local nibmeister could modify the VP to whatever nib you prefer. Get exactly what you want! I'm awaiting official diagnosis on my 823. While pulling back on the vac-plunger,a little piece of the nib that's inside the nib, came loose and slipped back into the barrel/ink-chamber. I believe this is a known problem; and,Pilot has, reportedly, taken steps to correct the cause. If my 823 needs to be disassembled, which it will in time,I will let Pilot do it. I will find out soon about Pilot USA warranty/charges for repair. They have responded to my emails and answered my questions professionally. Mahalo!
