They’re also both around the $176 mark (USD, that is) and they’re both “entry level” gold nibs, they’re both cartridge converters. The Platinum is the Pilot of its brand and vise versa.

It seems so simple. I am shocked that other manufacturers (save Jinhao) haven't adopted this type of nib.

I found buying custom made pens contained a hidden caution. Had 2 made and was shown pictures. I accepted them both and paid even though I wasn't happy with either. The problem was that I didn't feel I could reject a pen that had been made for me, even if it wasn't right. I notice a lot of recipients have spectacular custom pens, but that has not been my experience. So either those people only accept the best, or I get stuck with second rate efforts. And I'm talking about more than AU$800 for the two I had, so it's not a frivolous purchase. I just feel that not every customer gets the best experience with these independents.

Sheen is my favourite ink quality and I now own most of this series from Octopus fluids. This one is lovely, but I prefer the more original colours like witch and djinn. They are wonderful and have behaved well in the pens I have used them in :)

This ink certainly found that middle ground, not too much and not too little sheen. Really appreciate the word of caution about high sheening inks in general. I did not know about that.

I don’t generally use document inks, but these are such good colors and performers overall, I’m tempted to get some. Also interesting is that the bottles closely resemble Pelikan 4001 ink bottles. I suppose it could just be a generic kind of bottle in Germany. Thanks for the review.

This is a great review, Mick. All the factors that you mentioned are certainly considerations for the nib size - size of handwriting, paper being used (weight; line, grid or dot spacing); the construction of the paper (does it soak into the paper quickly or is the surface of the paper coated), etc. My usual nib size is either EF or F. Seeing the letters clearly is a big factor. I have a few pens that have wider widths and I tend to use them on heavier weight paper or coated paper. Being left-handed and an over writer, the ink has to dry fairly quickly. Narrower width nibs help achieve this. If I used heavier stock paper, I probably would use Medium width nibs As you mentioned, the ultimate goal for me is whether I can read what I wrote - does the letter "e" look like an "e" or like an "I" without the dot on top. This is all part of the journey. I just got a stub nib, so we will see how it works for me.

If you are writing using Chinese characters, for any of the languages that uses them, a fine or extra fine (if you can find the extra fine for a reasonable price) is likely going to be a better option for daily writing since you need more detailes to be visible.

@theoffstageme
@theoffstageme 15 күн бұрын
@@timtam929 the Diamond 580 is a great pen, but a piston filler. Twsbi’s Vac 700 is the most closely related Twsbi to this Asvine pen. The Asvine is cheaper (here in Australia at least) than both the Twsbi’s. It has good build quality and a good nib, and a different feel on the page to Twsbi (a little more feedback in my experience), so it really depends what you are after.

I was hoping for a review of the filling systems in terms of - you know - being filling systems. Listened until he altered ranking based on "environmental sustainability". Honestly? Not in the top 30 criteria for me and there are TONS of other variables that determine relative sustainability above and beyond what you do with the cartridge when you're done. I mean, why not buy ink in a 50 gallon drum and rinse it out when you're done if that's your leading concern? I *am* sorry. He *did* say these were simply his opinions, and that's fine. Just adding mine to the pile.
@theoffstageme

@@patdenoli7271 an actual review of the filling systems would be an excellent idea for a video. I’ll put some thought into how that would work and add it to the list. Thanks for the suggestion. As the video title suggests, and as you point out, this is MY ranking… which systems I like for what ever reason I like them. Mainly it’s ease of use and cleaning. Everyone will have different reasons for liking different things. So yeah, this video was never designed as a review of them… just a video about how I rank them in my own personal use. Thank you for your comment!

Thank you for the review, Mick. I have not bought a Stipula fountain pen. I do have a few of their ballpoints and was considering getting a fountain pen. The drying out of the nib is unfortunate as I think I would enjoy this model. The nib seems to work decently, though.

Stipula pens are nice but they are known to have feeding issues and the quality of construction is not that great despite the appearances, there is a reason why you don't hear a lot from this brand...
@sajjadhusain4146
@sajjadhusain4146 14 күн бұрын
@@paulll47 The reason why Stipula appears to be always overlooked, certainly in the U.S., is that Stipula has always been a relatively much smaller pen manufacturing brand than many of the other established, more popular brands in Japan and Europe. They have never marketed their pens and inks as incessantly and aggressively as the others. Mixed user experiences and reviews, with the disappointed users outnumbering the happy fans in the forums and comment sections is also a reason for Stipula’s seeming lack of broader appeal. But I can confirm that I’m far from alone in being an ardent fan of Stipula pens. There are legions of others, on FPN, for example.

My Stipula Etruria SE Resin is a mixed experience. The pen feels great in my hand and writes well, but the nib does dry out too readily. In my own notes on the pen I say that this is not a pen for an Australian summer. Waski, the other pen reviewer of note here, from North Dakota, has a similar Stipula Etruria with a titanium nib that has refused to write most of the time, and of late has only begun to work again after replacing the feed (from another pen brand). So I think these joint problems in pens drying out and actual writing difficulties, would make the recommendation of this pen difficult to swallow. Thanks for the review Michael.

I ❤️ Stipula. I own ten Stipula pens (in resin, ebonite and celluloid). I’ll get a few more in the future. The Etruria is an outright classic. I love everything about it. The design aesthetic, size, weight, feel in hand - and especially its (now) made-in-house (14k/18k) gold nibs. Even the steel and titanium nibs are perfectly nice, consistent writers. The section is rather nice. I’m invariably a higher gripper so my fingers are farther back than the narrow tapered part. The Etruria Gorilla is great. The matte black finish is particularly well done. I bought one for usd 175. It’s large, and has the advantage of being a c-c filler. Many thanks, Mick, for this review. Stipulas seldom get reviewed anywhere and when they are, I understand that Stipula pens have very mixed user reviews, i.e. a lot of love-hate experiences. I love all of mine.
