Must if running E85 1 for proper atomization engine must operate at 185 temp. 2. A blaster 2 coil is not enough to ignite ethanol. Must run a HVC coil. 3. For SBC on E85 36 deg. Is about all they like. 4. If you park your car more than a week or two you should drain the bowls and empty the Excelerator pumps. If you get gel in your carburetor like that simply fill the carburetor up with gasoline and let it sit for a day or two it will completely dissolve all the gel! No need to tear the carb apart.

Just thought I'd mention that my gas mileage almost doubled when I got my vacuum advance working right, engine ran much cooler too. Another thing I noticed was that without the vacuum advance, I had to keep my foot in the throttle like halfway, almost getting into the secondaries, just to stay at 65-70 MPH. Once I got the vacuum advance dialed in, I could cruise at 65-70 MPH with the throttle just barely cracked open.

@@HPRaceDevelopment I am trying to duplicate vacuum advance curve with sniper efi and hyperspark system. Kinda struggling to figure out safe lean cruise afr and timing advance.
@HPRaceDevelopment
@HPRaceDevelopment 2 жыл бұрын
@@cfmechanic Most people try to go too lean on cruise - it usually doesn't result in better economy after a certain point - if the engine is cammed at all - I suggest stay in the middle to high 13's afr wise which will really help any mis fires or stumbles vs tryign to dial in around 14.7 ( lamda around 1....We usually deal in lamda rather than afr - lamda .92-.95 ish is good cruise) Spark wise - A good tip I heard was use a vacuum gauge ran into the car - and play with the timing while at cruise until you reach peak vacuum. Of course listen for knock - but that works really well. Numbers as high as 50 degrees low throttle are not uncommon. Eventually you can advance so much is will mis some - so that's something to listen for. Just slowly work away at it - and anything past 75 percent throttle should mimic your WOT timing curve...
@cfmechanic

@@HPRaceDevelopment awesome amazing tips. My idle is nice at 14.7 cruise is set to 13.5ish I tried 13.8 but felt too lean slight miss at steady light throttle. I'm only running around 27 degrees in cruise will follow your tips thanks.
@HPRaceDevelopment
@HPRaceDevelopment 2 жыл бұрын
@@cfmechanic on a car without individual cylinder control, you will find through testing that you have lean and rich cylinders that avg out to the lamda you see. The variance is huge. For this reason - you may find it best to tune for lamda .9 at cruise and wot power lamda of .84 or .85. Afr aprox 13.0 for cruise and 12.0-12.6 wot. this keeps the really lean cylinders from being say 16:1 afr

Love me some E85, been running it in my Malibu since 2010, TT SBC fast XFI fuel injection. 13:1 355 and about 25psi with two little 50mm turbos. It does cause leaks on my AN fitting, anything older with rubber o rings. I just change them out for teflon as they go bad. And oil changes more often due to condensation.

On that Camaro a nice aluminum radiator designed as a Big Block replacement and a factory big block 7 blade fan with the HD clutch would most likely cure the overheating. But never forget the importance of a properly fit and sealed shroud. If you feel the need for E85 then by all means go for it.

I've got a 69 Camaro that has been sitting in my garage for quite some time. After watching your videos. It is beginning to spark my interest back in to my old girl that I've owned since 1992. Since my son was born I have let my car sit in my garage with out doing anything to it (priorities). My son now 15 almost 16 has been dropping hints that he wants me to do something with the car. I have been considering the switch to E-85 for quite some time. My current set up is rather out dated but is fine for the application and it's intended use. I have a stock fuel tank that has been modified with a sump. I have a Fram fuel filter housing and a Holley blue pump and regulator. I have 3/8 inch aluminum fuel lines running the length of the vehicle then just below the fire wall i switch to braided fuel lines to the regulator and to the carbs dual feen lines. The motor is fueled by two Holley 650 Double pumper carbs. The main reason I've have been shying away from using the E-85 is the corrosive properties of the Ethanol with Aluminum. Besides changing the carburetors and aluminum fuel lines what other recommendations would you suggest?

I changed the PV restrictions to lower jetting on a 950 xp E85 and delayed the signal to the primarys as much as possible so cruise is nice and lean. Had to change to a 50cc up front also to remove hit stumble. Tricky to get economy with 4.30 gears th350 5000 stall and a 400 cid solid roller. 😆 But I really like that XP E85 it's a nice unit. To get the full benefit of e85 generally requires adding ignition timing and tuning. Just adding e85 is only a small percentage in the potential power increase. FYI for every .10 you lower your 60’ times knocks off +- 1.8x in 1/4 mile ET. .10 x 1.8= .18 reduction in ET

You want to use a stand alone wideband O2 with the scale from 7:1 to 10:1, best power will be around 7.5:1AFR and best mileage between 8.5:1 and 9.5:1. The ECM isn't going to give you an accurate reading because its on the gasoline scale and won't show rich enough. With your blower you should pick up a good bit of power regardless, because ethanol cools the intake charge under the blower so much, and you can give it the advance it wants rather than being worried about knocking pistons and rod bearings out of it.

You should write a book on carburetors and what everything does and how it all works. I'm serious, you have a way of explaining things that a big dummy like me can understand. Or, have a tech section in your playlist on KZbin on carburetors, camshaft selection for sure, and other building, tuning, how to's, etc... I'd buy your book, or audio book, or whatever. You'd make a dang good trade school instructor. You remind me a lot of my late uncle, who was full of knowledge but humble and eager to help people out. I know you're busy but maybe you'll find the time here and there and School us. Anyways, really enjoy watching your videos and learning a little bit every video. I sure do appreciate you. I have been running E85 in my fuel injected Turbo V6 since 2019. If you are fuel injected, make sure you run a high-quality fuel filter like a IF-750 from Injector dynamics. The other thing is you need to change the oil sooner. I do it every 2k miles. When you change the oil, it will smell like the town drunk. It can get diluted with E85. It's more noticeable in the winter months. If you park the car for the winter, make sure you pickle the fuel system with gas. It will help to keep things clean and it won't gum up as it sits.

I don't remember what they did after you broke the axle but an easy upgrade is a 4th gen f body posi unit. They are 28 spline vs the Malibus 26. But also we have found that if you pull the gear back to a 3:23 or 3:42 you are less likely to strip the teeth off the pinion. But once you get into the 3:73 or lower gears that becomes a problem.

Bill, when I switch from pump gas to E-85 I picked up 1.5 to 2 tenths. That was on a 9.5 to 1 big block.

Hey Bill; something to consider since E85 is more detonation resistant than pump gas, is using a (slightly) higher temperature thermostat.....I know it sounds counterintuitive but, the ideal coolant temp between different fuels (ex: gas vs methanol) and different engine materials (ex: all-iron vs. all-aluminum) changes for the best thermodynamic efficiency. As said if your not knock limited, doing so can translate to more power, better fuel economy, and cleaner oil, but it it all depends on the tuneup to take full advantage of it.....I’d expect a thermostat of around 180-degrees be about the point of maximum beneficial coolant temp on E85, and up to around 200-being the point of diminishing returns or slight loss (based on what I’ve read / seen)......there’s some good content on this topic on YT where dyno water temp is swung to the high/low extremes on different fuels and the gains / losses can sometimes be surprising. BTW; my statement is based on you not having any cooling issues at the track, and it can get back down to thermostatic temp between rounds; if it that’s not the case then just ignore my comment. Keep up the good work 👍

I would for sure get an E85 sensor/gauge. It took me 3 fill ups, because running all the gas out of a tank does not get it all out, before mine read over 80% ethanol. And the pump I was using was reading E87 in mid summer.

Man that Camaro looks fantastic, a Big Block with a 4-speedy it doesn't get much better than that. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have the Malibu, it's looking fabulous and in my opinion running great as well and the color combo doesn't get much better either. Good luck if you go racing and if you're going to be doing that, I'd be looking for a 12-bolt rear end replacement or a 9-inch, even better yet. It's not likely your ever going to get rid of that beautiful thing anyhow, or at least I wouldn't be. Damn, I wish I had half the cars I've owned back, and at 72 years you can only imagine what that would consist of. Woops, didn't mean to go off on a tangent like that. You go racing and have a great time and enjoy yourself. 😎✌️❤️

This was a cool lesson for us new people to racing and tuning carbs. My question is will the e-85 effect the tuning on the nitrous? I believe you will have a blast at the drag and drive events, whenever you go that would be some great content that you’ll provide to your fans. I love everything about your channel and your kids channel, you guys have been killing it. Keep it up sir and have a blessed weekend.

Hope you use new head bolts on that 327, most don't know the head bolts are torque to yield items meaning they need to be replaced with new ones each time they are taken out. Especially with a performance engine.

Ethanol is right for me. The entire time gasoline wasn't over $3 between 2015 and F. J. B, I was focused on improving mileage on E85 and E100 that I make. My 70 GTO has had E85 in it since 2007, the 65 has been on it since 2018, and the 68 LeMans since 2015 when I put it together after dragging it out of a Nebraska pasture. It must be the Ohio fuel with the gel and corrosion, because I haven't found any of that with Nebraska, Michigan (upper peninsula when they had it here) and northern Wisconsin fuel. My junk sits for months to years, and everything is spotless when I take a carb apart. At most there might be some of the white chalky stuff left over from an additive. Ethanol itself doesn't cause corrosion or leave anything behind when it evaporates. Its nothing more than vodka, and when you empty a bottle of vodka or whiskey, is there anything left in the bottom of the bottle? What I have found is heat and compression are your friend. A 160F thermostat works great for gasoline, but is too cold for ethanol. You want 195F thermostat in it. Two reasons, it helps vaporize the fuel under the carb, and it will boil condensation out of the crankcase that collects in all engines with the heat cycles. It won't hurt power running it hotter, might actually improve it because of how much better at cooling the intake charge ethanol is. I've never done a back to back test at the track based on heat. Something to try out Bill... Best power and best mileage are not at stoich on E85/E100. Best mileage will be between 8.5:1 and 9.5:1 AFR, best power will be around 7.5:1, and you need a wideband O2 with the scale rich enough to get it there. Ethanol will run well over a VERY wide range, unlike gasoline. You can get it to run somewhat ok at 13:1AFR, it will buck and surge a bit, and you can go pig rich down to 5:1AFR, but outside the range of 7:1-10:1 you are simply wasting fuel. I have a 455 with 13:1 compression from iron heads I had milled to 64cc chambers, with the quality flat top pistons like Ross, Diamond, etc, it makes right at 13:1. I daily drove that until I found out that the least expensive FlePro head gaskets don't like more than 11.5:1. No problem with the fuel, only with the compression. Around 12:1 is the breakeven point for mileage, where you will get the same mileage on ethanol as you did on gasoline. With 13:1 and running it at 210F, my 70 GTO got 20mpg mixed highway/city driving using a Qjet I converted myself. I am the E85 Qjet guy, all the info on them comes from yours truly figuring it out back in 2007-2010. It had a 700R4 and a 3.42 gear behind it. It makes LOTS of power from idle to 6000rpm. Tire shredding transmission shattering torque. For comparison from 1996 when I built the a 455 for it, until 2010 it had 8.8:1 compression with 2.93 gears and a 2004R trans. The best it did with the pump gas 455 was 19, just about 20mpg while following a semi down I-40 when I took the GTO from Nebraska to my AF base in Charleston SC. The 700R4 has a shorter overdrive than the 2004R, and 2.93 vs 3.42 is a few hundred RPM difference. At 2000rpm and 27" tall tires the 3.42/700R4 was going 67mph. and the 2.93/2004R would be going 82mph at 2000rpm. The 13:1 engine did better with deeper gears and less overdrive. Before you think its like a sbc and it needs more gear or it will lug at low RPM so it would get better mileage with deeper gears, be aware that 87 octane capable 455 pushed that 4100lb GTO with its 2.93 gear into the mid 12s with stock converters and no spray. 455s don't need much gear. The 13:1 engine would have easily run in the 11s, if I had ever taken it to the track in the 70 GTO. That bottom end is in the 65 GTO (which has atrocious aero) with 11.5:1 heads on it, its my daily driver. Just took it to town and got groceries with it last night. It gets around 17mpg, unless I beat on it, which is often. My 455s are happy driving around at 1600rpm cruise going down the highway, they just do what they do best and grunt. E85 makes them grunt harder, especially between idle and 3500rpm, it drops off a bit after 3500 but still makes more power than gasoline. With the 2.93/2004R combo going up the mountains to Greenville SC was no problem, it would pass trucks without even down shifting, add more throttle and the 455s shove you forward. You don't NEED lots of compression to run ethanol, but you sure as hell can run more, and you use less fuel when you work it harder in the cylinders. 16:1 compression is no problem on pump E85, you can drive around with that, and never worry about if you have too much advance in it. Give the engine the advance curve it wants, because its not going to ping unless you have it running VERY lean. With 7:1 to 11:1 engines you will lose a few MPG with the switch, how much depends on the engine design, if its EFI or carb, how hot you are running it, and of course how you drive it. Its VERY enjoyable stomping the skinny loud pedal on the right with an E85 fueled engine, unless its not tuned right and its too lean or too rich. The 65 GTO does better with the 455 at 11.5:1 and a 3.08 gear (17mpg) than it did with a 400 with 7.8:1 and 2.56 gears (15mpg) but its more about how much torque is pushing the rear gear than the fuel. The 400 was kinda anemic but would run on any camel whiz you put in it. Yeah I know how to squeeze mileage out of big engines on pump gas and ethanol. It should be obvious that if you build a 13:1+ engine you are not going to be running it on pump gas ever again, what happens with my Pontiac engines when they don't get enough octane is they flatten the upper rod bearings.. and it happens fast. As for corrosion, special instructions, additives, stainless steel, and the rest of it, 2007 to 2022 without a problem. The rubber fuel hose I use from NAPA and Advance lasts longer, not that I run much of it. NHRA rules state no more than 12" of rubber hose in the entire system is allowed. When I was running race gas in my 79 Formula, it was going through fuel hose every two years on VP 110 and Sunoco 110. I had to switch the hose out, because it got brittle and would crack. Accel pumps would leak almost every spring after I put the car away for the winter. None of that happens with E85 or my home made E100. Ohio must be putting some crap in the fuel that you don't need. I am ramping up my production this year, with plans to make 500 to 1000 gallons a year from now on. Between cattail vodka and methane I will be making as well, I will probably never buy gasoline again. There are other things you can do to improve mileage, but its much harder or impossible to do with a carb. It involves heat in places you really don't want it with gasoline. I'll explain that if you want.

2 things about E85, it runs clean but doesn't like the cold weather we have in Ohio on Start-ups....😁 What I have found in my area, Speedway is my last choice, a little inconsistent on their E85. I use a local Co-Op, might be something to pay attention to. Advice for older vehicles, make sure you are compatible, maybe you can run through this Bill for the guys thinking of making the switch.

hey bill.. I'll tell you what I did back in 98 99 Era. I had a 350 powered Trans am. I also put a nos plate in it like you. but same deal. my rear wouldn't hold together after a dew nos launches. so back than they sold a kit. called something weird like the top hat or something. but it was just a small kit like 50 to 100 shot max went inside the air cleaner. now this was back before draggies and what not so I don't have times and I only street raced it. but I was able to use that kit for the luanch than the bigger kit for the rest of race. it took some getting use to and best way I found was 2 button setup. 1 on wheel and 1 one shifter. and as you let off 1st kit hit second. I can tell you every weekend my best friend called me out to race and it always went same way we left together on a good day or him out in front and than I'd drive around him. using this wacky setup I was able to be in front of him off the start and not grenade my rear. I was you'd dumb and you know the rest lol but also my car was only able to be built of money I won. so I was trying everything to make sure I was infront with out breaking alot of parts and a good rear kit was out of my budget at the time. maybe this helps may e it just remind you how far kits and builds have come in last 20 some years lol
