Prof. Oliver said that when you see something beautiful, you also see something that is true and good. And yet the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil is described in this way: "pleasing to the eyes, and the tree was desirable for gaining wisdom". Cannot beauty be deceptive? Can it not lead to terrifying amounts of evil? I would say that beauty is far more often like a drug that makes you see fantastic visions, and feel tremendously happy, while dragging you towards the bottomless pit of addiction.

I'm not sure if the Sacrament of Penance may be seen as in any way arbitrary. It stems from John 20:22-23, where Christ speaks of the Holy Spirit. And of course at Christ's baptism there was present "the Spirit of God descending like a dove [and] coming upon him" (Matthew 3:16). If Baptism is seen as a sacrament, why shouldn't Penance be as well?

thumbs down must have been from a Calvinist or an atheist... As for the video, very good points discussed. Only complaint is that, in true Anglican via media style, they avoided discussions about the real presence etc... However, it's clear that this is the way the conversation was heading without making it explicit. I think it won't be long until a truly catholic view of the sacraments is recovered and the Calvinists will clearly be defined as outside Christian orthodoxy.

And then there are the Baptists, who mostly deny the whole concept of sacrament. I can still hear Pastor Titus saying, "There's no magic going on here, folks; we are simply remembering the Last Supper." It was a very powerful experience to walk into an Episcopal church many years later and encounter the sacrament of the Eucharist for the first time. The whole concept of the sacraments just make so much sense in light of that experience. Can't resist sharing Louis Weil's great line, "Anglican theology holds that there are two sacraments, which are in number seven." Lol!

The world is charged with the glory of God (Hopkins) The sacraments are not magic ( and is not taught as such)...they are not just signs.
