It doesn't get much better than seeing you holding Sound Effects and giving it the praise that it deserves. Hey there Hanna. Nice to see you again. You just took me back to a dynamite year. Jeez it was one great album after another. One great concert after another too. Those were the days. You could see XTC, The Pretenders, Blondie, The Ramones and The English Beat all in the same week for under $40.00. Well done. You are going to do one of these for every year? I will be routing you on. If I had to pick three that really gave my turntable a workout in 1980 they would be The Pretenders debut, English Beat 'Just Can't Stop It' and The Jam's 'Sound Effects'. Also Pete's 'Empty Glass', Rockpile's 'Seconds of Pleasure', DK's 'Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables', Grace Jones 'Warm Leatherette', etc... Super post H~ Rob/Boston

I'm a child of the 80's. It's so wild to see that these great albums are appreciated by younger people as well! Here's a few more that I didn't hear you mention, but think you might dig... Ultravox, John Foxx, Poison Girls, Rough Trade (the band, featuring the great Carole Pope). And I love that you dig classic rock too! I hope you have heard Jethro Tull's "Stormwatch" and "A". Brilliant once again! Covers off all my favorite albums I have from 1980, with two shout out exceptions: Rush - Permanent Waves and Eno/Budd - Ambient 2. My top 10 (from 10 to 1) is probably XTC, Bowie, Psychedelic Furs, The Damned, The Jam, Stiff Little Fingers, The Stranglers (IV), Genesis, English Beat, and The Clash. The Stranglers IV isn't really a proper album as it takes a bunch of tracks from The Raven (not released in NA) and then adds some singles of b-sides. But it was an LP in my teenage world, and maybe my favorite from them. There are few records from your video I will have to check out, including the Buggles! It's been years, and I don't have it. Thanks again, and loving this series.

Love the fact that some of your favourite records are from the 70/80s even though you're such a young person! A bit like me saying that I love a lot of stuff from the 50's, some which I do by the way, or the 40's even, which I wouldn't have a clue about. Great to hear a young person's perspective on these records - and quite an interesting varied selection! Talking Heads - Yes!!....and so glad that you also selected Kaleidoscope by the Banshees and Bowie's Scary Monsters...!

Greetings Hanna from Felton CA. Glad to contribute a little bit for your future research. Ya, Snakefinger. Not for everyone. On the unusual side, from a similar vein as The Residents. In fact, I believe he toured with them. Anyway, 3 excellent albums to his credit (and one maybe not so much) and then he was taken from us. Almost every song features his creative and unique guitar work. If you like it, check out his 1979 album, Chewing Hides The Sound. You have given me a suitcase full of music to check out! Your channel reminds me of when I worked at record stores in the 80s and everything was word of mouth.. I really liked Nocturnal Projections. Thanks again!

Hi there Hannah. There is one album that is one of those incredible debuts from 1980. Its The Comsat Angels album Waiting For A Miracle. Almost every track is superb its hard to pick faves but On The Beach, Total War, Baby and Postcard are brilliant. There was a time when this album got played a lot. It was the most wasted and dangerous 3yrs of my life. I was living with an older junkie lady around 1982 who loved it too and she showed me the dark side. As the album says, i was waiting for a miracle to escape alive and i finally did. Fantastic album.

Hard to pick a fav...many that you mentioned. BTW another great offering! That whole period for me was about the labels and their rosters. By 1980 Factory, Beggars Banquet - Rough Trade - 4AD were releasing so much great underground music. The LA Punk thing was taking off...Slash, SST, Frontier Records. The majors were cashing in too. It was difficult to keep up with it all.

Hi Hanna- I enjoyed both this 1980 and 79 videos (meant to comment on that one). Some of my 1980 faves are Elvis Costello Get Happy, XTC Black Sea, The Jam Sound Affects, The Feelies Crazy Rhythms, Squeeze Argybargy, English Beat I Just Can’t stop It and Any Trouble ‘Where are all the Nice Girls’. Take care! / Matt

@@TheOmahaIntrovert Impressive, it can't be easy to find physical copies of all those. The Suburbs' next album, Credit in Heaven (1981), was elusive -- when I moved to the Twin Cities for college, I thought I could pick it up no problem, but it took nearly a year of searching before I could find it. There's actually several copies on discogs for a decent price. A fascinating double album the first to come out of that scene before 1999 and Zen Arcade.

Another great video. Thanks for taking us down memory lane. If I had to pick one album I'd add, for me it would be Throbbing Gristle's "Heathen Earth". Thanks for showing the love for The Soft Boys. Underwater Moonlight rules. And thank you for specifically mentioning Kimberly Rew. These days he's best known for Walking on Sunshine but his guitar work on The Soft Boys is heavenly. Like a guitar master who is a bit drunk and stumbling around the frets but still keepin' it all together in perfect time. It was sad to hear about the death of Matthew Seligman last year. He died of Covid-19 apparently after being admitted to hospital. It's a shame. He was a very important part of them getting back together for their reunion tour and was really nice to the fans, making a website for the comeback, providing lots of free live clips from the tour, and convincing the band to put out one last album. I loved what you said about Joy Division creeping up on you. I remember feeling the same way when I first heard Unknown Pleasures in the early 80s. The first time I heard them I thought, "this is awful...the singer is off key" and then the next day I listened to it again and thought "well it's different...I'll give it that" and then the next day I heard it again and thought "call me crazy but I'm kind of digging this and I'm not sure why". To me, this is often the sign that you've discovered something great and it's just taking time to sink in. It's happened to me with some of my favorite bands over the years. Johnny Marr was hugely influenced by Factory and a lot of that early jangly stuff. He loved Vini Reilly and bands like Monochrome Set. He's obsessed with that label and with good reason. I'm still collecting what I can find from that label. And Industrial Records. And The Fall. I need to get a job that pays better.

Hi Jeremy. Thank you for the wonderful comment! I guess I haven't gotten around to checking out Throbbing Gristle yet. That really is a shame that Seligman passed away from COVID. Another notable artist that lost his battle to COVID is Adam Schlesinger from Fountains of Wayne, etc. Kimberly Rew really is a talented guitarist! Love his style. Oh yes, I really connect with something after giving an album several listens. This is why I still like buying CDs. Love to listen in the car over and over for an album to sink in and take hold. Joy Division...so brilliant! I'd love to find more from the Fall. Yes, I also need a better job to support my out of control music addiction! Haha! Thanks for being here!

Another great list. Of course you know that I love anything Who related and that Pete Townshend album is a classic. I started exploring Robyn Hitchcock even more after watching your videos (even did a review for Element of Light) and picked up that Soft Boys album which I now love. Sound Affects is my favorite Jam album as well and "That's Entertainment" my favorite Jam song. That XTC album is probably my favorite album cover and the music is great too. I still am not quite a Joy Division convert but I have put the songs off Closer on a flash drive with several thousand other songs and have it on shuffle to play in my car. I feel that if I break up their songs and hear every one now and then, it will help. Otherwise, I love almost all the albums you showed and the ones I don't are probably because I haven't heard them. Some of my favorites from 1980 that were left off: The Up Escalator (Graham Parker), Bad Luck Streak In Dancing School (Warren Zevon), Le Chat Bleu (Mink DeVille), Seconds of Pleasure (Rockpile), Sandinista! (The Clash), Heartattack & Vine (Tom Waits), Making Movies (Dire Straits), Arc Of A Diver (Steve Winwood) and The River (Bruce Springsteen). A couple of these were shown at the end. Can't wait for the next year.

One record you really should checkout from 1980 is Stiv Bators solo album Disconnected. Its totally power pop and not at all like the Dead Boys or Lords of the New Church. Some of my faves that you didn’t feature include: The Damned - The Black Album Circle Jerks - Group Sex Tom Waits - Heartattack and Vine Killing Joke - Killing Joke Ramones - End of the Century Plasmatics - New Hope for the Wretched DOA - Something Better Change Talking Heads - Remain in Light Angry Samoans - Inside My Brain The Jam - Sound Affects XTC - Black Sea

The same day I bought Sound Affects, I also picked up Joe Ely's Live Shots album released and recorded in 1980, when Ely and his band were opening for the Clash in the U.K. Great high-octane county punk if you dig that kind of sound. 😎 Geat channel Omaha!

Hi Hanna Another very good themed video of an amazing year. I have got most of the LP's you showed and agree with most of your comments. Black Sea is a classic, and the fantastic black album. The Dexy's Midnight Runners LP caused a quite a stir in the UK, some people hated it because they considered it arrogant. But it started a whole movement of kids wearing Donkey Jackets and woolly hats. Love your Japan LP's behind you. One of my favourite bands, I managed to pick up some singles yesterday from their early days. I would add The Sound 'Jeopardy' up there with Joy Division in my opinion. The two Fall LP's from 1980, The Undertones 'Hypnotised', Captain Beefheart 'Doc at the Radar Station' and a couple of wild cards. Nic Jones 'Penguin Eggs' possibly the best UK folk record ever released and The Searchers self named LP released on Sire, magnificent power pop from the grandads of jangle. Have a good week. Gary

Hey there, Gary! Good to hear from you again! Sounds like you had a successful trip to the record store yesterday finding some Japan singles! I need to find those early LPs from the Sound but they are so rare and scarce. One day maybe I will get lucky on that. I have a nice compilation from Omnivore Records of the Searchers material from that era. Great power pop/jangle indeed! I'll have to sample that Nic Jones record. You are so knowledgeable on fantastic music! Thank you for sharing your thoughts as always!

I just stumbled across your channel and really enjoyed this video. It’s great to hear such genuine passion in a vinyl collection video-not to mention from someone who is also a big PT fan! As for 1980 it’s almost a watershed year when you think about it! I totally agree on Wild Planet being my favorite B52’s album. I hope to one day get the whole run of Joy Division on original UK Factory pressings but so far have only managed to find Transmission and Love Will Tear Us Apart. Sandinista is one of the gaps in my UK Clash collection. My three other suggestions were all in the final part of the video. Boy is still my favorite U2 album and one of the greats. Zenyatta may be my favorite Police record track for track and is when their sound on disc really jumped forward-my UK copy is fantastic! I’ve been getting more and more into Peter Gabriel in the past few years and I suddenly latched onto Melt which is almost always in regular rotation. The original USA mercury pressing is really, really good. I haven’t tried the original UK version yet but did just find the alternate German edition at the local record convention. Thanks for a great video!

Hi there! Any PT fan is a friend of mine! Welcome, and I'm so glad you enjoyed my video! Hope you like my other video offerings, too! And extra points that Wild Planet is also your favorite by the B-52s! Isn't it neat finding alternate or International pressings of your favorite albums?! I really dig early U2. Can't stomach their mid-80s period too well. I hope you find those original Joy Division pressings in the near future. Incredible band! I'm compiling my wishlist of records to look for at an upcoming record convention! Cheers!

@@TheOmahaIntrovert I look forward to digging through your other videos. It’s a tough call between the debut and Wild Planet but WP has so many great tracks. Strobelight may be my favorite song of theirs. Thanks I’ve been trying on JD for years. Unknown Pleasures is on my grail list. Admittedly I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to seeking out different pressings and the country of origin rule. I love being able to find UK imports especially after long searches. I finally got the UK Regatta to finish off my Police collection. If you get the chance the early U2 albums are all excellent on the original UK vinyl. The USA pressings are very good but the UK ones have the edge...😂

Well done!!! I didn't buy many albums from 1980 in1980. I saw a few at the end, Lennon/Ono Stevie Wonder, and The Stones. Back then I also bought Neil Young - Hawks & Doves, Emmylou Harris - Roses In The Snow, Grateful Dead - Go To Heaven, Warren Zevon - Stand In The Fire, and Jackson Browne - Hold Out. Now I have a ton on CD. I don't really have a #1 pick from 1980. I have trouble ranking because different music elicits different memories and associations. Thanks for your review!!
