How To Make A Floating Bead Necklace
by Jennifer and Kitty O'Neil
Running With Sisters
Faceted crystals make this necklace really sparkle. And the “floating” effect is so easy to create! We have a complete video tutorial to show you how to make your Floating Bead Necklace. We’ll show you how weave the wires through the beads to create the floating effect. And we’ll show you how to finish the ends and put on a clasp.
MATERIALS
9 faceted rondelles, blue AB and green AB, 5mm x 12mm (“AB” is a shiny, iridescent finish on beads. It stands for Aurora Borealis.)
10 faceted rondelles, green AB, 4mm x 6mm
20 brushed silver ball beads, 3mm
1 lobster clasp, silver-plate or silver color
2 clamshell bead tips, silver-plate or silver color
2 crimp beads, 2mm, silver-plate or silver color
2 jump rings, silver-plate or silver color
Bead stringing wire, 19-strand, silver color
Bead stringing glue
Masking tape
TOOLS
Chain-nose pliers
Round-nose pliers
Wire cutters
Tape measure
This necklace is an easy one to make as a gift. We like that it doesn’t require a lot of beads, so you can actually choose more expensive beads. And it goes together fast! Let us know if you make one and what beads you chose. We love hearing from you!
Happy Crafting!

Dear ladies , thank you so much for this tutorial. After I saw your video, I bought the stones and all the instruments need it , and today I made for the first time a necklace. I love it!!! I will definitely make some for my friends for Christmas. Thank you so much!!! You are amazing teachers!! You made it so easy, even for someone like me, trying for first time.🙂 😘

I just happened upon this video and I am thrilled to see this cute easy technique. I have been trying to figure out how to do a similar look but was using a crimp bead on each side of each bead on two separate strands. Then the silver crimps tarnished and turned black! Not what I expected. 😒 This is a much better design. Thank you!! 😍

This is an absolutely wonderful tutorial! I have made 5 of these necklaces now, in all different kinds of color combinations, each one is just beautiful! Thank you for this great video. One note...I bought the EXACT wire you are using and didn't have any crimp beads small enough for the ends....so I improvised and knotted the two ends twice and slipped the knot inside the clam shell, a dab of glue and PRESTO! It works GREAT! The wire is so nice and soft and pliable and it's super easy to make a knot with it at the end!

A couple of years ago I bought 2 HUGE Rubbermaid totes full of beads along with another BIG box of beads (with accessories, but no tools) from a friends apartment manager because the previous owner of the beads passed away. I paid about $145.00 for tons of beads, and sold some seed beads to a neighbor. I’m going to try to make some of these necklaces for Christmas presents, but make them about 22” long. Nice video!

after looking at my fishing line i think the beading line would be best for me. fishing line is difficult to work with and on the necklace shown here the small shine of wire is integral to the look of the piece. i'm going to make this for myself. ty for posting.

What astounds me is that you close the clam shell loop and then open the jump ring and put it into the clam shell loop and close it. I DO NOT CLOSE THE CLAM SHELL LOOP AND OPEN THE JUMP RING. DON'T BOTHER WITH OPENING THE JUMP RING. JUST PUT THE JUMP RING INTO THE CLAM SHELL LOOP AND THEN CLOSE THE LOOP. THIS WAY YOU ARE ASSURED THAT THE JUMP RING IS AS INTACT AND AS IT CAME FROM THE PACKAGE. (I do plan to make this Floating Bead necklace using real gemstone beads and I thank you for sharing and giving us the demonstration)
@TheONeilSisters
@TheONeilSisters 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is a redundant way to do it. We show how to do it that way in case someone has the type of clamshell bead tip that has a closed loop on it. Then you need to open the jump ring to attach it. We think this would look lovely with real gemstones! J&K

Aloha 🌈 I don't bead but I am glad to find your channel. It is satisfying watching your tutorial. It's sort of therapeutic. Thank you. May I please request one thing? Could you possibly get your focus with the camera closer to the work? I have very poor vision and everything are so tiny. Mahalo to both of you. You're both just as beautiful as this necklace 😘 Stay safe and sending you warm ALOHA ❤️🌈

I'm wondering why you don't slip the jump ring onto the clamshell BEFORE YOU CLOSE IT then you don't even have to open the jump ring? Excellent tutorial. Thank you.

So glad you were able to make it quickly! If your beads are sliding around too much, maybe add more beads. Then they won't have room to move. Or try bigger beads. Hope that helps! J&K

Hi ladies. I keep watching this video. I love it. My biggest challenge is what to charge for my work. I have tried to keep track of prices of individual items but my head just swam. What suggestions do you have??????
@TheONeilSisters
@TheONeilSisters 4 жыл бұрын
You could make a little spreadsheet with the costs of the materials in it. Then add them up for each piece. But we think even if the materials don't cost much and it didn't take you long, if it's a great design and well made, people will pay more for it. You could look at similar items on Etsy or in catalogs like Sundance and see what people will pay for something. If you use higher quality materials, like real silver and real gemstones, that adds to the perceived value and you can try charging more. We think people don't charge enough for their beautiful handmade jewelry! Start higher and see if people will pay it! J&K

Love the details you share , I'm definitely a details person . I would love to see the video in 1080p as I can only choose 720p. I have a question about calm shell clasps . When ever I've per chased these things I've found the loop to be flimsy and I have no faith in its strength. I don't have the funds for silver which I assume is stronger. Any ideas ? I did think of trying to straighten the loop out to try and hammer it to harden it but the one time I tried it snapped of when I looped it back round again. So I'm done with ideas . Thank you in advance .
