Life in Singapore is becoming more & more stressful as the cost of living becomes more & more difficult for the low income citizens. The prices of HDB flats kept increasing. Transport fares and food also kept increasing. The past two months at Dawson, two youths ages 19 and 20 committed suicide by jumping down from a block of flat. What’s the reason for them to end their lives were not announced. We cannot imagined the kind of pain their parents are going through. It makes a lot of young couples very scared of having children. General election is around the corner. Singapore needs more opposition members like Lee Mun Wai to be voted in to check the PAP government. Certain cabinet ministers should be removed due to their inabilities to control the prices of public housing and public transport fares which have brought hardships to many ordinary Singaporeans.

Besides looking at the education aspect, pls look at the employment aspect. A rosy picture is painted in the papers but on the ground, many young people aren’t able to find work related to their field of study. A good example is IT- by hiring foreign workers to plug a gap in the recent years and in the past, we now have a situation where firms prefer to bring in cheaper FW and skip hiring our new grads/ locals with relevant experience. How will the government address this situation where firms say “Fresh grads welcome to apply. Three to five year relevant experiences needed.” It’s like putting the cart before the horse in terms of expectations no?

It is sad that some of sg ministers and the current PM did not set themselves as examples of being proud parents themselves. They are childless, by choice or they don't want to go through the trouble and pain of having kids through IVF. Thus, it will be very difficult for them to understand what it means to have their own kids and for couples who hope to have kids through IVF but too costly. However, the least they should do is to support those who wish to have kids and need assistance. After hearing this debate, it occured to me that in the past eg. before 1980 perhaps etc... people just expected that they enter the workforce, get married, have children, and find a way to retire comfortably. Today's youth's aspirations are indeed different. Perhaps work needs to start from the upbringing, be it from parents, schools, societal focus etc.. Today's focus on progress and dreams of what one can achieve, should be balanced with expectations that we also need to pass on our experiences to a next generation. The second pretty minister is as out of touch with people in their 30s or 40s. Young people she cited (17 - 24 years old) of course will not think of having babies. At this young age they just want to make money first. However, as they approach to 40 years old or beyond, that's where they want to have babies if they are married. Many couples I know in their 30s wanted to have children although they didn't want to have kids when they were younger. However, by this age, their fertility rates have gone down. They need to spend lots of time and money to try having children through IVF. However, the support from gov for IVF in hospitals is super slow and low . Thus by the time a couple could have their first kid through IVF (if successful) would be about 5-8 years later and the couple would have become old parents in their 40s or older. So Leong's proposal is urgently needed by Singaporean couples who wished to have children.

Low TFR is largely due to cost of living crisis and let me point out the main culprits... PAP spent 100 billion or 20% of GDP compared to 3% to 10% in other countries as the ex-president approved without any scrutiny. Up to 4x times more! This results in increasing GST 2 times to 9% to restore reserves causing the cost of living crisis. Why is no one questioning how money is spent? I see so much wastage. Someone i know lived overseas for 8 years prior to covid but was given 9K!!! I dont know which individuals or businesses does not deserve the lavish sums of cash, but someone needs to look into the records. Instead of going around reimagining things, why not just propose that those who are living in 3 rm hdb flats with two child can have a second chance to apply for a 4 rm or 5 rm BTO without any penalty and with same chance as a first timer applicant.
