Indranee Rajah: No political officeholders involved in MDDI’s NRIC policy circular

During the Parliamentary sitting on 8 January 2025, NCMP Leong Mun Wai sought clarification from Second Minister for Finance Indranee Rajah regarding ACRA's disclosure of full NRIC numbers.
Leong from PSP questioned whether any political officeholders had cleared the controversial circular issued by the Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) in July 2024.
The circular directed all government agencies to stop using NRIC numbers as authenticators or passwords and to cease any planned use of masked NRIC numbers in new business processes and digital services.
Leong further asked whether any political officeholders had given directions during the clarifications between civil servants in ACRA and MDDI regarding the circular’s instructions.
“Depending on the answers, I would like to know whether our civil servants have been thrown under the bus,” Leong remarked.
In response, Indranee initially stated, “Certainly not me” when asked about her involvement in clearing the circular, suggesting that Leong await the findings of the ongoing review of the incident.
When pressed further, Minister Indranee confirmed that no political officeholders were involved in the circular or in giving directions related to it. She also mentioned that an after-action review was underway to examine the matter in more detail.

I see Mr LMW working hard to be the voice of many Singaporeans. Given up on the ruling party's resolve to lead us to the future. Making Singapore a rich country but yet citizen not rich in tandem to that is not what the people want when they gave PAP the mandate.

Partly due to many new citizens from Malaysia China who recently received their pink IC citizenship. The gov is missing out. There is no fear in Singaporeans letting gov agencies using the NRIC, but the gov has processes intended for Nric uses. Which is why pdpc set up. Private companies and government agencies are practicing pdpa from nric uses.

Sorry, the civil service decided on governmental policy without political weightage? That isnt democratic process and needs to be called out. All decisions need to have accountability by political office holder and not shirked away. That is the point of voting, and point of democratic process in governance.
