What a great era in golf. Few hats and great characters. The lack of commercial branding is so refreshing.

Tom Watson was in a class of his own playing links golf.

I miss this era of golf. So many legends playing at the same time. I wasn’t a Watson fan back in the day, but I am now. He was truly a great player.

This was my first Open and had Qualified at Gullane as a 17 year old amateur as did Mike Mclean 17 and Ronan Rafferty 16, we had a great picture with Arnold Palmer as our three ages equalled his age of 50. Also the R&A do the lockers in Alphabetical order so mine was right next to my hero's Tom Watson. I think he'd had enough of me by the end of the week but Tom was very happy winning his third Open at the great Muirfield.

Brilliant stuff, classic era for golf, only spoiled by so many adverts from you tube

Fantastic. Only spoilt by seeing the winner in the title before I watched it!

Was a wonderful year, for the majors; Seve winning his first Masters, Jacks comeback that year, winning the US Open at Baltusrol, and then the PGA.

What a classic, the 1980 Open. Legendary players. Watson absolutely amazing. Loved seeing Trevino and Crenshaw laughing together after they both birdied the 8th hole.

1980 was indeed the first year that The Open was scheduled to finish on a Sunday. It would prove to be a wise move: Wimbledon Tennis Championships followed suit 2 years later.

22:53 Oh God. I have no idea who this Ken Brown kid is, but I was SO impressed by that chip shot, and he followed it up with THAT??? I know there's major championship pressure to consider, but that might be the worst putt I've ever seen. That's a gut punch to ME, and I'm just some guy watching the game 42 years later on a device that hasn't been invented yet.

What was the direction of the wind and how strong was it? That's one of the variables on those links courses.

You mean the 43 deg wedge these days - lol

What a shame that golf has lost this wonderful technical ability, as it stems from a more wholistic view of including the minds and attitudes of players like these. There are no players likes this now. They may make more accurate shots thanks to technology, but they are a bunch of juvenile nobodies when to comes to what makes a great golfer. The demise of the human race.

Players today crash & burn when their swings/minds get a little off…JT, Spieth etc….can’t figure out how to manufacture a swing and pull a round out of their hat. The Phil-Tiger era was the last of the magicians
