I 'm an orchidaholic, and I subscribe to lots of orchid channels. Yours is quickly becoming my favorite because you address questions that no one else is answering, such as regular semihydo vs. self watering with leca. I also loved your video about fertilizing because it was crystal clear. I'm glad you're science-y, because too many you tubers don't really seem to have good reasons for what they do, and if they do, they don't explain it as clearly as you do. Keep up the great work. I look forward to seeing more of your gorgeous flowers.

Those were a bargain, and you get a free loop stake for future use 😅. It’ll be interesting to see how your experiment with the pumice and lecca works! Should be good I would think. I’m going to try pumice and volcanic rock as soon as I have a suitable orchid candidate to be repotted.

Nice, I may try something similar! As for the arched stakes, you can easily cut them in half, just where the curve begins and you'll end up with two nice straight stakes!

And the red flowered plant is still an Nelly Isler, just another clone (I guess Swiss Beauty Dark Red)...

Hi! I have the Nelly isler red velvet, it isn't that. I have 3 Nelly Islers in total and this isn't a Nelly isler, it is a different shape and the plant is totally different , different shape pbulbs etc. Also not fragrant at all. I believe it is the Oncidopsis Francine 😄

@@TheOrchidRoom Oh I see is just that Inca Orchids only carries the Nelly Isler but it may be what you say... these intergeneric hybrids are anyway always a mystery!

@@sergioteodosio Their website is out of date at the moment unfortunately and they don't have all their hybrids listed. Which is slightly annoying as it used to be so easy to just go to their webpage and find your ID. I have many from them that are 100% not on there, including the aliceara renaissance coral from Inca, which they do not say they do, but it's a pretty unmistakable hybrid :-)

Hi! They're not always up to date unfortunately and many of the new hybrids they stock aren't listed, the Oncidopsis Francine isn't on there for example 😄 It's good for many of their hybrids though.
@michaelmccarthy40775 жыл бұрын
I would agree with Francine 'Roseglow'. It is interesting how similar Nelly Isler and Francine are, given their rather different genetic makeup. Francine also has a reputation of being easier to grow due to one of the parents being a primary hybrid of Miltonopsis bismarckii and roezlii (both warm to cool growing).
@TheOrchidRoom5 жыл бұрын
It does seem less fussy so far, and it really is interesting how similar to the Nelly it is! unfortunately no fragrance though 😢 do you happen to own any species Miltoniopsis? I'd love to find some but nurseries don't seem to stock them, I suppose because they are probably more fussy than the more vigorous complex hybrids we have available... Vexillaria is just so pretty though 💗
@michaelmccarthy40775 жыл бұрын
@@TheOrchidRoom I don't own any Miltoniopsis, they don't do well for me in Florida, even if I keep them indoors. As far as the species go, I see them once in a while on ebay as resales from those that import from Ecuagenera. I think Ecg is the main source for them.

Cool! Let's see how they do. Today I repotted a dendrobium nobile and an oncidium type, that were also in that coco fiber and soil.... So far I've never seen snails but the Dendrobium had a really gross hairless caterpillar or worm 😝😜 it was lime green color with suction feet so I didn't see it as it blended with the flower stems, then I saw droppings on the leaves.... yuck!

Ugh sounds disgusting! I hate bugs! I recently relesed predatory mites onto my orchids to try to combat thrips, after continually spraying them with pesticides all summer and getting recurrences ... I keep having to remind myself that the mites are the good guys but seeing them on my orchids feels just wrong 😂

I LOVE your videos and watch them as soon as you post. You are soooo lucky to have a garden center that brings in orchids of such good variety and quality. (Oops.... except for the SNAILS😱) I only have one request and it has to do with your opening music. It may be just me but the opening “beats” of the piece you have chosen never fails to startle me. Do you have another piece of music you might choose as your “signature” KZbin music? Sorry if I seem picky. 😥

I’m having trouble finding Seramis, last lot I bought was advertised as seramis but was just rough, misshapen leca balls !
@TheOrchidRoom5 жыл бұрын
This is where I get mine 😄 www.onestopgrowshop.co.uk/products/seramis-clay-granulate-7-5-litres It is very fine grade so probably only suitable in certain circumstances, it works very well for my masdies and Restrepias and I'm testing it on other orchids. Just be aware it stays very moist and you may need to put a top layer of something to stop algae or moulds (I use live moss or horticultural grit pebbles 😄 )
@TheOrchidRoom5 жыл бұрын
Also, recently used it for a phragmipedium and some Catasetums and both love it. I mix in a bit of leca to bulk it up and create a bit more airation 😄

I bought an Oncidium about a month ago, I asked for it to be reduced because the flowers were dying so got it for £3 from £9 It's an Inca brand, Ondontoglossum or something like that but not sure what's happening with it, I did repot it into orchid bark when I got it, I don't have anything else soil wise, where do you buy the products you used? I must get some hydrogen peroxide 3% can you tell me is it the food grade one you buy, that's what I see on Ebay? These plants look lovely, never seen a scented one before! :)
@TheOrchidRoom5 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Your odontoglossum hybrid sounds like it was great value! Orchid bark is fine, you may just notice it drying out quickly when the plant is in active growth and needing to water more often 😄 especially being an odontoglossum type which do like a bit more moisture typically also. Personally I find bark difficult to work with on its own but that's a personal preference. You can buy 3% hydrogen peroxide at pharmacies also or yes the food grade one is just fine. You can also buy the 6% and dilute it by half to make the 3% before spraying onto the orchid 😄
@angelbabesuz16125 жыл бұрын
@@TheOrchidRoom I only have orchid bark at home as I don't have many orchids (3) and as a 'beginner' I'm trying to learn how to care for them, I have lost 3 previously, gave up then thought I would try again as I love orchids, is there anything I should mix with the orchid bark to help them? I will buy some 3% peroxide I just wasn't sure if there was different grades....thank you :)
@TheOrchidRoom5 жыл бұрын
@@angelbabesuz1612 It really depends on your environment which makes it kinda difficult 😄. If you're just starting out again, bark is probably easier to manage, but moss is great to mix with bark for more moisture loving orchids. However it can increase the risk of staying wet for too long if used in the wrong environment so personally I'd stick with bark for now 😄 It's totally fine to use and doesn't hold onto as much moisture so it's more user friendly. When your orchid starts putting out new roots you may notice it drying quicker but that just means you water more so it's fine 😄 bark can have a layering effect where it stays wetter in the middle than the outside which is one thing I don't like about it but as long as you're aware it's happening and can manage it it's fine 😄
@angelbabesuz16125 жыл бұрын

Me again. I forgot to ask my question. What size pumice are you using?
@TheOrchidRoom5 жыл бұрын
Hi! So for the oncidiums I used a pumice called lava lite which I purchased from amazon but it doesnt say the grade on it! But I just went and measured a few pieces and the average size in length seems to be 8-10mm but there is a bit of variation in the thickness, some are 3 or 4mm thick while others are a bit thicker. I hope that helps! The usual average size measurements advertised usually refers to the length of each piece I think?
