I just have one Zygo. It is just in medium bark. As soon as its dry, I run water through or soak depending on the heat. Im in S. Africa. Dry and hot in Summer and cold in winter. Bright light. No sun. Doing ok and cant wait for a bloom.

hello all! this is a strange question but could anyone in the scientific community point me to a paper that references this specific method of Ph determination? I have looked and looked but all articles are either paywalled or lead me round in circles :( Thanks!!

gorgeous vid, I'll use this data for my aquarium stuff. btw the difference in ph/ size of bark is most likely due to significantly higher surface area the finer the bark is. over a short period like 24h that should do the observed effect, it would balance out the more time passes.

It makes sense that these orchids would do well in a self watering pot . Some varieties like a lot of water. As a newbie to orchids , I must say it gets a little confusing because I’ve watched successful grower to the complete opposite growing conditions for E. Cordigera … dry wooden hanging basket , or in a clay pot with coco bark and charcoal .. outside with direct morning sun till noon. And hers grow and bloom profusely! So I’m quite amazed at the 2 Very different growing methods/:

I got my Sharri baby last September and it has never bloomed yet and the leaves are a lighter green than yours are. Your leaves look so healthy. My leaves have brown spots as well. Mine is planted in bark, I have 15 orchids in total. Should Sharri baby be in a sunny window or in shade?

Some orchids like dendrobium kingianum need a winter temperature drop below 14*C or 57.2*F to set flower spikes. Your Encyclia may need something similar to flower.

I just found your channel and I’ve been binge watching your videos. You’re a wonderful teacher and you’re really in tune with your plants. I’ve learned so much from you. I’m a new orchid grower and I’m so fascinated by their growth. I’m guilty of babying them. The way you handle your plants with care is comforting to see. I wish youde come back 😢.

Yes, the hole in the top has to let the air out so the water can get in, so the straw will move. Otherwise the water will be held back by the air pressure inside the tube. Great build and clear video thanks!

It's an involved regiment you have. but really the process is something I wouldn't do myself. I don't have anything negative to say at all, it's just too much. I'm not lazy I find it just intimidating. Maybe if I could attend a class and learn bit by bit but in this condensed form of video learning I will continue to find information that I can reasonably absorb. Seems like all people here though have found it really useful though. Lighting, getting the right media, potting size, watering schedule are all things that are elements I've found to help my orchids growing well. Some orchids just will not grow in my environment so it's ridiculous to fight it unless I want to get into a more professional grow room.

the water filter manufacturers recommend you change filter as soon as you can hand over more money. my tapwater is about 60ppm TDS according to their figures, so i just use that. when i can remember, which is less often than desired, i use aquarium water conditioner to neutralize the chloramines etc. in tapwater. dont bother supplementing with silica, there's more than enough of it in water etc. for plants that want lots of it, which is bog growing plants like horsetail. extensive testing shows there's no difference in growth whatsoever for plants supplemented with silica. but since it's completely inert and doesnt harm plants, they'll take your money for it if you believe their hype. everyone will tell you not to mix all sorts of nutrient solutions together, unless you really know your chemistry, as it's actually quite easy to make nutrients fall out of solution (precipitate) by mixing ones that are incompatible, and then they become non dissolving solids.

This is absolutely stunning! I wonder how it is doing now? I must have a look and see if you’ve updated lately. This is such a piece of living art. I would love a setup like this , but am not sure I’d trust myself with the watering. Although, for a display like this I think it’s worth the effort.

You don’t say how they are potted up. I would like to know what medium you use. I thought they needed more air holes in the pots. I have rescued several over grown cats and am trying to get them to revive. i have put them in bark, but maybe have them in too much sun. I have put rootless divisions in moss first, but maybe they don’t need that.

Thanks so much for doing these extensive tests and sharing. That was so informative! I think the difference between the lava rock and the small pumice is that the lava rock keeps the water as a thin film on its surface, whereas the pumice absorbs it through its whole internal structure and then releases it. I think that explains why both were moist to the top, but there was still a pool of water at the bottom of the lava rocks and not the pumice. They both wick well, but one only along its surface while the other absorbs and stores it more like a sponge.
