How do we know when to use the double or triple bond?
@znorth4305 жыл бұрын
You use it when an element is unsatisfied and doesn't have the 8 electrons it wants. By moving the lone pairs between the elements and making them bonds instead, the two elements can share them and have more electrons. You keep removing an electron from each element and adding bonds until the octet is made. That's why there may be more than one bond.
@krishnaswamy66845 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the reply!
@justadreamer44 жыл бұрын
@@znorth430 then why doesn't N2H2 form a triple bond? Between the nitrogens?
@Andrew-gx7xu4 жыл бұрын
@@sadiyajilani3993 In the video he drew N2H4 and both nitrogen had a lone pair, but he also said that Nitrogen and other elements with 5 valence electrons will fill the octet with their valence electrons and form bonds.. which nitrogen could've done in that example... what do you mean "nitrogen LIKES" to have at least one lone pair ?????
@joshpatra4 жыл бұрын
@@Andrew-gx7xu For N2H4, the N's don't bond with each other more than once, because if they did, then it wouldn't satisfy the octet rule. If you look again, if the remaining 4 electrons did bond with each other, then there would be a double bond between N, with 1 lone pair, or a triple bond between N with no lone pairs. If there was a double bond, it would mean there would be 4 total bonds + 1 lone pair which equals 2 electrons. That adds up to 10 electrons, which is not satisfying the octet rule. If a triple bond formed, then there would be 5 bonds total, and that also adds up to 10 electrons, which once again doesn't satisfy the octet rule. You'll learn more about when to not use the octet rule, but for now, OCTET RULE, OCTET RULE, OCTET RULE. Double, Triple, and Quadruple check your answers to make sure they satisfy it, unless it's not possible.
